Hard to believe we're actually almost into October! Halloween decorations, costumes and candy is out in every store, now and I was curious if anyone decorates, costumes up or has Trick-or-Treat night in your village, town or city? Carol and I usually get a pumpkin or two and do the Jack-O-Lantern carving and I decorate a little. Our small village has Trick-or-Treat one evening for the kids and we put our porch light on and dole out goodies, too. I love having the kids come by, but get a little embarrassed to dole out the candy by myself, so I sit in the livingroom with Carol, put a classic horror film on and enjoy the two hours the kids are allowed to go out for candy. Sure is different from when I was a kid! I don't think there was a time limit and we hit every house we could! Heck, my Aunt used to bring her large brood of kids up to where we lived and they went out with us and Mom would take us down to their town on their night, so we could really get some major candy hauls. I think it's sad that these days, parents have to be so careful about goodies that are handed out and hospitals even offer to x-ray the kids candy and such! I think that was just beginning to be an issue when I was getting to the age not to go out. I remember hearing my parents talk about some poor kid that lived in a large metro area, biting into an apple that was full of razor blades! How could anyone do something like that!? very angry

As a youngster I "trick-or-treated" from the age of six(6) until I was about ten(10), dressing in various costumes(a vampire, a werewolf, a robot, and a zombie), and collecting quite the tonnage of candy, which my mother would immediately confiscate after my(supervised) prowling of the streets in the neighborhood, in order to prevent me from attempting to consume more of the candy at one time than she deemed appropriate. I once, in my early twenties, entered, with a young lady I was dating at the time, a fairly elaborate haunted house-it was cool, though not as high-tech as today's "haunted houses", what with their Hollywood-style makeup effects, gadgets, animatronics, creepy sets, and animated characters. I remember my own haunted house visit well, because I got into a scuffle with one of the "haunted house" employees, a guy dressed as a mummy who thought it appropriate to make physical contact with me in order to scare me. Mistake. After I slammed him against a wall I was asked to leave by a local off-duty police officer. nonono As I have aged and become something of a geezer, my sole Halloween fulfillment(or lack thereof) comes in the lineup of movies planned for AMC's annual Monsterfest, in some years really good, with plenty of material to watch and tape. Of course in other years AMC's lineup of films is little more than redundant replays of Halloween 4 or Halloween 5, or other celluloid fodder like Leprechaun thumbs down At least this year there is a good lineup of horror films on TCM, which will keep my DVD-recorder(the new one I just bought) busy, with uncut, and commercial-free, and oft letterboxed films. At AMC, the only thing I have seen lately shown in letterbox format are the commercials. nonono |

Great thread! I love this Halloween discussion. I love watching horror movies in October and let's not forget the annual airing of It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! A Halloween tradition! Anyway, I love October. There's a crisp breeze in the air and Halloween decorations are adorned on houses throughout the neighborhood. I'm looking forward to going on hayrides and hitting up a few haunted houses. Hopefully, there'll be a Halloween party or two to go to. Just for fun, here's a pic of me dressed as Michael Myers (aka The Shape) from HALLOWEEN: (Please click thumbnail for full size)

Seeing this pic Dan, I believe you could give Kane Hodder and Fred Krueger a run for their money.

True. Kane Hodder is a big fellow, which I believe was one reason why he got the part of Jason Voorhees, wasn't it? eyebrow |

There really isn't anything about October I don't love! Mr Green I love the crisp air, the way it gets darker, earlier, the horror films, Trick-or-Treat and one thing I always remember loving, the apple cider and how life just seems more cozy! Ro-Dan, great photo of you as, Michael Myers! thumbs up |

But here in England October's horrible! I used to love Autumn when I was back in Spain, but it's so cold here! |

Here in Michigan it starts to get cold by Halloween. I remember being a kid and my mom would have me wear a jacket over my costume, which really sucked. Lately, however, the last few Halloweens have been quite warm. Hopefully the trend continues this year. As long as it doesn't rain, trick or treat will be cool. I love passing out candy. |

What do the kids really like these days, candy-wise? I know back when yours truly trick-or-treated, I always looked forward to: bitesized candy bars(Snickers), bubblegum, licorice, and various and sundry suckers(lollipops). The one candy type I despised was candy "corn". faster <!--emo&shifty eyes--> <!--endemo-->

Very much so! :D I don't particularly like cold weather. |

I recall wearing a jacket under my costume, some years! It can get quite chilly here, as well, but I'm definitely a cold-weather person. I would prefer to live in an area where the day time temps never get above 60º-65ºF. Mr Green I always loved chocolate, but guess most women do. ;) I loved to get Reese's peanut butter cups, Snickers, Almond Joy, Pay Day, etc. I also liked Charm lollipops, anyone remember these, they were the yummiest! Not the Charm's blowpops, just your basic and simple lillipop...also, Tootsie-Roll pops were good, too. We used to get apples, homemade doughnuts, cookies and small bags of popcorn, too. Like you, Lee, I DESPISE candy corn! cheeky sick smiley |
