I also liked Godzilla-The Series(1998), better than I did the 1998 film Godzilla. The cartoon series had lots of monsters, young Tatapolous and his team following up on monster/mutant sightings all over the world, and some great battles between Godzilla and some of the other monsters. I own one DVD, a story arc called "Monster Wars". There are two more DVDs available: "Mutant Madness" and "Monster Mayhem". Actor Ian Ziering(from Beverly Hills 90210) voiced the character of "Nick Tatapolous" in the animated series , who of course was played, and I thought fairly well, by Matthew Broderick in the movie Godzilla(1998).

If you like this animated series, you might also like the older Hanna-Barbera Godzilla cartoon series, that aired in 1978 on NBC, part of the program's "Godzilla Power Hour". There are two volumes of this cartoon series out on DVD.

The Hanna-Barbera animated series, volumes 1 and 2, is available at Amazon.com:
Hanna-Barbera "Godzilla"-Vol 1 and 2 on DVD

Here is Wikepedia's summary of Godzilla The Animated Series(1998):
"Godzilla The Series(1998) at wikepedia

Godzilla: The Series(1998) DVDs are available at DeepDiscountDVD and very affordably priced:"Godzilla: The Series(1998)" on DVD

Oooh! I love that TV show! Yes I remember it well, the monsters he fought included a giant bat, a giant maggot (of the sort) and Cyber-Godzilla (that's the actual name according to my Godzilla enciclopedia). I remember on the last 2 episodes (I think were called "Cash of The Titans") the monsters atacked places like New York, London, and even Madrid! Mr Green
I used to watch it back in 2000 or so, I haven't seen that show in years, I know they released a DVD with a few episodes but I'll be great to have the entire series!

SciFi Japan has one of the best guides to this animated series, Johnny, that I've seen on the internet: http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/2006/03...lla-the-series/

It's good to see that more DVD's of this series have been released.
That's a really good guide, now I know that the Godzilla from the series was in fact the son of the Godzilla from the film, I guess it was probably the baby from the egg that hatches at the end of the film. I loved the episode in which Godzilla fought Cyber-Godzilla, I never knew that it was made from the carcass of the original. I was a bit annoyed to see that they actually made toys of this series and never released them!!! Those toys looked so good!!!

Agreed. Though I don't have a large collection of figures I wish I could have bought a Zilla to add to the ones I have. Remember, Johnny, that the 1998 American "Godzilla" film generated over $380 million dollars worldwide-it made a very nice profit for Tri-Star and for Toho. Zilla, and the 1998 film, may be regularly ridiculed, even blasted by casual and hardcore Godzilla fans, but I'm certain Toho still has an appreciation for this character, considering the $ it made them. nod

Yeah definitely, you might have noticed that when TOHO were promoting "Godzilla: Final Wars" they kept using the fight scene between Godzilla and Zilla, I think that's the reason why most people went to see it, shame they didn't know the fight would consist of:
2 Atomic breaths
1 Jump
1 Tailwhip

It's probably my favourite scene of the film, but also one of the ones I hate the most simply because TOHO supposedly don't like the American Godzilla and yet they kept using it to promote the film, and when you actually saw the film the fight lasted 30 seconds!!!!! very angry

As for me I loved the American Godzilla film, it was either the 3rd or 4th Godzilla film I ever saw, and the only one I ever managed to see at the Cinema.

I first saw Godzilla(1998) back on May 20, 1998 at a nearby theater. I was really fired up entering the theater. After watching it I was greatly disappointed. I also dreaded the fan backlash I knew was coming. This movie was absolutely villified in G-Fan Magazine. Richard Pusateri a short while later coined the phrase "GINO", an acronym for "Godzilla In Name Only", which is still used by Godzilla fans, and non-fans alike, to describe the monster from this 1998 film. My criticism of the monster, like so many others, is that the beast was too much animal, and not enough monster. I also thought the overall design of Zilla made the creature too reptilian and, again, not enough monster. I can enjoy watching the 1998 film periodically, say once a year. I'm not a tough film critic, and I can be fairly easily entertained, perhaps because I like all giant monster movies, to varying degrees of course. It will be interesting to see which Godzilla films make it to HD-DVD and or Blu-Ray. I would love to see all of them in this format, but since I doubt that will happen here are the first few, maybe the only few( tongue-1 ) that I believe will make it to this format:

Godzilla(1998)
Godzilla 2000(1999)
Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidorah: All-Out Monsters Attack(2001)

Same goes for me, even when I first saw it I described the monster as a "Giant Iguana" and that's not a positive coment, of course back when I first saw it I was too young to even care about the terrible script and so I quite enjoyed the film, but now I watch it maybe once or twice a year. For some reason I still get the feeling that the version shwon at the cinema was slightly longer than the one released later, there was a bit in which Zilla "hugs" the Empire Estate Building, I'm sure that scene used to be longer in the cinema.

Fortunately the animated series based on the movie turned out to be fairly good. Hell, I thought some of the trailers for the 1998 film were good, especially the one where GINO's huge foot comes crashing through the museum roof, trashing the T-Rex skeleton. I also liked the trailer(which was from a scene in the movie) where the old man, in the rain down at the pier, ends up "reeling in" GINO. I also liked that trailer a lot as well. thumbs up

Yeah they were great trailers, I like them because they make you want to see the film but don't actually spoil it, it's a shame that a lot of today's trailers show a bit too much.

I remember the museum trailer well, they actually shot a special sequence for the trailer, most people don't bother to do that but I think it's great.

Special sequence? heyo

When I saw the "museum" trailer for the 1998 film I actually still had no clue what Godzilla, overall, was going to look like in the movie. I actually thought he would still be mostly an upright monster, much like in all of his other films.

By that I mean that it was filmed especially for the trailer rather than being taken from the actual film.
Other films to have done this include "Terminator 2" and "The Hulk".

Okay, I understand now. Thanks for the clarification. :)

Well said. To me that's exactly what a movie trailer's supposed to do-nothing more and nothing less. thumbs up

While I've never actually watched the cartoon what I've picked up about it is despite being about the US remake Godzilla it seemed to try to be more like Godzilla's hero period during the late Showa era which would have to be and improvement over Godzilla US
