Producer Rick McCullum said at Monday night's Empire Awards, "We're very excited--we just got confirmation George Lucas has committed to writing the Star Wars TV series.

"I guess this is the news all fans have been waiting to hear."

Filming on the TV series is expected to commence next year.

ComingSoon.net attended the Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith DVD junket at Skywalker Ranch on Thursday, October 6th. At the event, "Star Wars" producer Rick McCallum talked about both the new 3-D animated Clone Wars series and the live-action series in development.

He added that "the live-action television series is something we're planning for just at the beginning of 2007 and we're just starting to interview writers and trying to really figure out, you know, which direction... It is going to be much darker, much grittier, it's much more character-based. He envisions somewhere like 100 hours between 'Episode III' and 'Episode IV' with a lot of characters that we haven't met but have been developed in other novels and other things. So, we're really excited about that because I think finally we can have the opportunity to answer everybody's questions once and for all by the time we finish the series."

Asked where the live-action series will be shot and in what kind of format, McCallum said that "principal photography will take place all around the world, probably with a base in Sydney. And, yes, we will be shooting in hi-def. Or, if anything else evolves within the next 12 months, you know, that would replace hi-def. I don't see that happening, but there may be new and more, or less expensive cameras with more optical imagery or optical discs that we record on. But basically it will be hi-def, yes."

Frank Oz, the voice of Yoda in the films, was also present and addressed a question whether or not he and Yoda will be part of the two new series. "Rick and I haven't talked about it yet. I am involved in the animated series right now. We're here at the Ranch as Rick said and we're currently working on the project and I'm very excited about that. The live-action is a little further out, so we haven't had those discussions yet. But knowing George and knowing the franchise there's going to be animated characters in there, we just haven't discussed them yet."

Ian McDiarmid, who played Emperor Palpatine, was asked a similar question about revisiting his character in the TV series. "Nobody really knows the details of the television series, I don't think that's because people are being particularly coy. I just think a lot of things haven't been decided yet. But I know that George's intention is to follow one of the characters who's been less highlighted up to now, but has been very popular with audiences. And sure, if it's the period between the movies, the Emperor has to be referred to. But you'll remember he was referred to often without actually appearing in the first Star Wars movie. And Peter Cushing was his very effective representative. So, I suspect there might be a number of very effective representatives, but you know, I always answer my telephone."

Star Wars TV A Ways Off

Rick McCallum, George Lucas' longtime Star Wars producing partner, told SCI FI Wire that future projects are a ways off, including a live-action TV show that is at least a year and a half away. "Star Wars TV series, probably not for a couple of years," McCallum said in an interview at the Saturn Awards in Universal City, Calif., on May 2. "George is starting to start the basic concept of it. ... We're interviewing writers. We're seeing a lot of people. But I'd say it's not going to be happening for another at least 18 months."

McCallum also denied rumors that the new series would focus on members of the Skywalker family, but repeated that the show will take place in the timeframe between Episode III and IV. "All-new characters," he added. "That missing 20-year period when Luke is growing up. ... Think bounty hunter. That's all I can tell you. There's nobody else that you'll know [in it]. At the moment. You know, it's still [in] really really early stages. He hasn't really sat down to think about which direction [he's going]."

McCallum added that 3-D theatrical versions of the Star Wars movies are still planned. "We're working on that," he said. "It's just a question of how many theaters will be out there. Hopefully, by the end of this year there will be about 1,500 [3-D] theaters. We need about two or three thousand before it makes it, you know, viable for any of us to go out in 3-D. But that looks like it will happen sometime in the year 2007, so hopefully we'll be happy about that."

Lucas is also planning a new run of Clone Wars-themed animated shorts. "There's an animated series being done right now, so that probably also won't be ready for another year," McCallum said. "But, yeah, that's looking really good." —Patrick Lee, News Editor

TV Series Update

So where are things at with the two "Star Wars" TV series? Well, there's not a lot of news on either front though things are moving full steam ahead behind the scenes. The CGI animated series is well under way. Lucasfilm's animation studio in Singapore opened in October and has been progressing rapidly. Word is characters have been designed and the look is quite different from the previous "Clone Wars" series. Writing on the show has also been in progress since shortly after "Revenge of the Sith" and is led by Head Writer/Story Editor Henry Gilroy. Though George Lucas isn't writing the series he's heavily involved in the development of the scripts. The show is set between "Episode II" and "III" or what is better known as the "Clone Wars" era. Despite being heavily covered in the comics, books, and cartoon series, expect a few surprises. George Lucas has stated he hopes to see it on the air in 2007.

There was a brief stir recently as mainstream press realized Lucas was also working on a live action series. Despite the fact that it was old news to fans, a few details emerged. There was a very good article in TIME magazine about it. Like the animated series, the live action series has been progressing rapidly and quietly. This past August, Lucas and McCallum were in Sydney discussing shooting it there (Lucas visited the set of Superman Returns in August while there). Amid the flurry of reports on the show, TheForce.Net put together a pretty good recap of what is confirmed about the series:

- The "Star Wars" live action television show will consist of 100 hours ( or 100 1 hour each episodes )
- The "Star Wars" live action television show will be based on secondary characters with possible cameos by some movie characters
- The "Star Wars" live action television show will take place between Episode 3 & 4
- The "Star Wars" live action television show will be done at the pricepoint of 1 million dollars per episode
- The "Star Wars" live action television show will start filming in 2008

What's not confirmed but rumored is that the show will have comic character Quinlan Vos make an appearance. Jedi Master Vos was spared a grisly death in "Revenge of the Sith." Lucas had a scene depicting his death on Kashyyyk storyboarded, but he spared the character at the last minute. (The comics show him escaping the clonetroopers and later having a newborn son while in hiding.) Will he play a prominent role in the TV series or is it a fan's hope? Expect more news to trickle out from Lucasfilm's presentation at the San Diego Comic Con in July.

Peter Mayhew and Daniel Logan are at the New York Comic Con this weekend and IGN scored some pretty interesting scoop. Here's a passage from an online article by Steven Horn where the upcoming live action television series is touched upon briefly.

"As for the forthcoming live action Star Wars television show, both Mayhew and Logan would love to be involved. Logan has a meeting with Rick McCallum next week and seems eager to reprise the role. Mayhew, the sage, simply smiled and said "I think he (Chewbacca) is going to be there. He needs to be there. It's all in the lap of the gods."

George Lucas offered relatively few new clues Saturday about his plans to move the next generation of the "Star Wars" franchise into television, though he did spend much of his time denouncing the blockbuster mentality of the movie business, calling TV "a lot more fun than doing features."

Interviewed as part of the Museum of Television & Radio's Paley Festival, Lucas said that he's currently in production on 100 installments of a 3-D animated series, "Clone Wars," which is similar to the micro-series of shorts that Cartoon Network aired earlier. The plan is to complete the episodes in-house, he said, and only then offer them to a network.
