It appears Yoshimitsu Banno, director of Godzilla Vs Hedorah(1971), has secured funding for this film.

Keith Aiken, site owner/operator of Sci-Fi Japan, pointed out, at the ATARI Godzilla forums, that "initial development funding", which is considerably less $ than for general funding, was secured for this project, which means that this film is far from a done deal. Here's his post from that site:

Quote:

"I've already put out requests to contacts in Japan and the US to see if there's anything more to report at this time.

One thing I have noticed on the various message boards is that many people think the announcement means that GODZILLA 3D got the funding to go into production and the movie will now get made. Kerner Productions only said they have provided "initial development funding", and that is not the same thing.

SciFi Japan's Robert Saint John posted the following on Monster Zero, and I think it gives a much more accurate idea of what has actually happened:

At this moment, in my opinion, this is no different than when Peter Anderson (a specialist in 3D cinema production) had material on a website in 2005 saying that he was involved in the project. And, hey, what do you know: Peter is now "Director of 3D Imaging" at Kerner. Development funding is not the same as full funding or a greenlight. Development funding is a little bit of money to continue creating conceptual artwork, further drafts of a script and maybe technology demos. With that, the producer can continue to go around and shop the project to get real funding. It's very much in Kerner's interest to put this "on their resume" so to speak, both to show that they have projects in the pipeline, and in the hope that the project gets funded and becomes a real paycheck for them.

I would argue that perhaps it's not as dead as we thought it was, but it still isn't alive. Best to wait for some news or announcement about the production getting real funding or being greenlit before getting too excited. Until then, it is not "a go".

So be optimistic, but don't assume this is anywhere near a done-deal yet.'

I will post any further updates to this project in this thread as they happen. :)

This is one of those situations where we have a positive, but we can't say for sure whether or not the whole thing is secured. This is a good thing for Banno, but it's not for certain whether or not more is ready to surface.

I'm with you here, and exactly for the reason you stated. I've seen posts from those declaring that they hope this movie fails...and say that they are Godzilla fans. I cannot understand why a "G" fan would feel that way. confused

WHAT!. shokking

How could any fan say that... Yoshimitsu Banno did a good job on Godzilla vs Hedorah, so he does deserve to return making another Godzilla film.

My thoughts exactly. Banno should be commended, and supported by all Godzilla fans, for his efforts in securing funding for this film, something that is usually a fairly difficult thing to do.

I hope this film gets made. thumbs up

I'm not a fan of Banno's GODZILLA vs HEDORAH but I do agree that a 3-D Godzilla film would be pretty freakin' cool.

And also Dan, unfortunately, potentially pretty freakin short. The tentative run time for this movie is around forty minutes. freak out

Keith Aiken, at Sci-Fi Japan, has posted a very detailed chronology of Yoshimitu Banno's efforts to get a 3-D Godzilla film made. Banno, who directed the 1971 film Godzilla Vs Hedorah, aka by its international title "Godzilla Vs The Smog Monster", continues to work to that end. The link: http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/

From what I've read, so far, Banno's chances are about 50-50 right now. I personally hope he can get an IMAX 3-D Godzilla film made.

The primary factor in getting this film done is money. Yoshimitsu Banno must secure the financing that would be necessary to make the film. As to how much $ he would need I have no idea.

Well, I can't say I like "Godzilla vs The Smog Monster" very much, but I do think that Banno (after all of the criticism the Hedorah film received by fans) will most likely improve a lot on his previous Godzilla film and make it more appealable to a wider audience.
I hope he gets the job, I'm sure he'll make a good job of it, and it's always nice to see a previous Godzilla director come back.
I hope that this new film is as mindless as "Godzilla vs The Smog Monster" was, that way we might get some fast-paced action! Then again the film will only last about 40 minutes so IT MUST BE fast-paced, if it isn't then there won't be enough time for much else in the film.
I can't wait to see this movie! Problem is it might be complicated to see it here in England, I hope they release a DVD or something.
'The void is that which stands right in the middle between this and that. The void is all-inclusive, having no opposite — there is nothing which it excludes or opposes. It is living void, because all forms come out of it and whoever realizes the void is filled with life and power and the love of all things' - Bruce Lee
