I'm shocked I haven't brought this classic little film up for discussion in the past, but here it is. Released by Planet Film Production (The same folks responsible for, Island of Terror), in 1967, this is quite an enjoyable sci-fi effort. It's one of those films that I tend to really enjoy, because the story takes place in a very small area, this time, an island and much of the action, isolated in a local pub. It's the dead of winter, but this island is suffering through a very abnormal heat wave and each day, the heat continues to rise. The citizens of the island tend to wander in and out of the pub owned by novelist Callum (Patrick Allen) and his wife, Frankie (Sarah Lawson). Things get even hotter, when Callum's ex-secretary/mistress Angela (Jane Merrow), arrives on the island, too. One of the strange guests at the pub is Godfrey Hanson (Christopher Lee), a scientsit who has his own suspicions as to why the island is enduring such high heat. Once the suspicions are founded, it's a fight to see who, if anyone can get off the island, alive. Directed by the great Terence Fisher, this is another enjoyable effort from the man and the cast....including a Guest Star appearance, Peter Cushing. Available on R2 DVD, the package is quite nice, with a booklet telling the history of the story and film as well as an audio commentary with star Christopher Lee, screeenwriters Pip and Jane Baker and film historian Marcus Hearn. AMC used to broadcast this film under the U.S. title, every now and again, but not in years. |

Why am I not surprised by this statement? I have heard of this film but I have never seen it. I'll look at some internet reviews of it and probably put it on the "docket" for purchase in early 2008. :) |

I don't think you'll be disappointed by the film, Lee, it has a strong story and while many people have voiced disappointment over the final revelation of the beasties, I didn't think they were all that bad. It's too bad there isn't a rental service like NetFlix, but rather than limited to just region one discs, you could rent discs from any region. For some reason, I think I read on a DVD site that there is such a service, so I'll have to check into that. busy bee |

Here's a review of Island Of The Burning Doomed(1967), aka "Island Of Burning Damned" and "Night of The Burning Doomed": http://www.1000misspenthours.com/reviews/r...rningdoomed.htmhttp://www.amctv.com/show/detail?CID=9462-1-EST I'm going to try and watch this film the next time it airs on AMC. I notice that IMDB has it listed as a 1967 film, with a U.S. theatrical release in 1971. I'm assuming that it iinitally aired in theaters in the UK, in 1967. |

I read and the review and the reviewer does make some valid points with the positives and negatives of the film, but I think with a film like this, a viewer really needs to experience it for themselves. Some films are so bad, that fans can be warned off and should be and then there is a film like this or Island of Terror and in my own opinion, while not the best-of-the-best, they sure aren't so horrible that you want to rip your eyes out before the film's over. I think you could be pleasantly surprised when you see this, Lee. :) |

I believe, based on the review I read, I would like this film. The burning question(pun intended )now is: when will it air on AMC again?

Very good question. I know I was so thrilled that time I got it on VHS, must have been back in 2001 or 2002.....I stayed up half the night, waiting for it, so I could start the VHS at the perfect moment and stop it, too. I think AMC must have still been airing films, commercial-free, as I will admit, I never quite got the knack for pausing the recording during a commerical and starting it up, again.

...Ever wondered, Kimi, how much hate mail and hateful email AMC got after selling out and integrating commercials into their movie broadcasts? |

I can only imagine, as I was on several classic horror message boards or groupls at the time and there was a lot of unhappy film fans. I can say the decision to go to the commercial format as well as leaving the better part of the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s behind has had to have hurt AMC to some degree. |

I actually received my copy as a birthday gift and it was purchased at......Xploited Cinema. I know you haven't been happy with past purchases from that site, so you might want to try, Diabolik DVD, as they also carry the various DVD regions, too. I believe Diabolik DVD is based out of NJ. |
