Okay. As many of you may, or may not know, there was an advance teaser trailer preceding the movie The Transformers in theaters, advertising an untitled film about what looks to be a giant monster attacking NYC. The trailer soon showed up as a bootleg, copied on camcorder from the theater interior, and posted at YouTube. There was no title in the trailer, just "1-18-08" displayed at the end of the trailer. I have seen this trailer-in it a private party, in New York city, is rudely interrupted by loud explosions and the roar, or roars, of what sound like very large monsters. The trailer is shown from the aspect of someone videotaping the party, then the explosions and roars from outside the building, and the resulting chaos, including a local TV station interruption on a TV regarding the disturbance. Moments later a colossal explosion hurls ejecta everywhere, the head of the Statue Of Liberty comes crashing down onto the street, rolling end over end. More chaos, people running everywhere and so forth. The trailer ends. Predictably, there has been wild speculation about what the monster is, that it might even be multiple monsters, even some suggesting that J.J. Abrams and his production company, who are making this film, have decided to resurrect GINO, an acronym for the "American" Godzilla which was featured in the 1998 Devlin/Emmerich movie Godzilla. I have also seen those who opine that the beast in this upcoming film is the "Cthulu", a mythical, squid-like creature with mandibles and claws.
From what I have read this film is NOT going to feature ANY incarnation of Godzilla-it will be, rather, an entirely new giant monster, or monsters. There is great debate about this trailer, and the movie itself. While I find much of the content at other boards, mostly heresay, completely assinine, I still think the movie deserves it's own thread here at Monsterland Forums. Click the link below to see an enlarged image of what is alleged to be the first official theatrical poster for this film:

Note the claw marks behind the missing head on the Statue Of Liberty, and the huge wake in the bay that leads to the city itself. The head on the statue has been ripped off. The famous landmark stands 305 feet tall, by the way... freak out

I will post any updates as I get them, be it links or videos. Bear with me if any inaccuracies arise in this thread-I will correct/edit/delete them as I go. In the meantime talk about your feelings on this movie and anything else you want about it as well. All replies welcome. :)

OK, I admit it, I'm drawn in with good artwork on a poster and I like that poster. Almost reminds me of, The Day After Tomorrow, I loved the many variations of that artwork, too......hope this film can live up to the interesting poster/artwork. Mr Green Thanks for the heads-up on this, Lee. thumbs up

So do I. thumbz up
This film is, IMO, a huge "roll of the dice" by J.J. Abrams and his film production company and obviously, I hope he rolls a "seven". tongue-1

The postulated return of GINO, which stands for "Godzilla In Name Only", an acronym coined by Richard Pusateri back in 1998 shortly after the '98 American "Godzilla" movie hit theaters, has been ruled out, along with any other incarnation of Godzilla, because Paramount Studios, who have theatrical rights to this film, have not purchased any rights from Toho to use Godzilla, a copyrighted character, in this film. Give credit to Abrams and his marketing people, who have created a huge stir among fans of giant monster movies and those that aren't. I hope all the hype and excitement generated by the teaser trailer of this untitled film is justified when more is revealed about the film, and the monster. noddy

Obviously, I'm a sucker for giant beastie films, so I really hope this film gives us something to get excited about. I am curious as to what the beastie might look like. Mr Green

Usermember Blue Cup, at the ATARI Godzilla forums, posted these images of what may be more poster art for the upcoming monster movie, scheduled for theatrical release in January, 2008, and being produced by J.J. Abrams and his production company. These images have not been confirmed as official poster art for this movie project.

Here's another image that was posted at ATARI by Blue Cup. Click the thumbnail to see an enlarged image of the colossal explosion. There has been speculation that the monster's face can be seen in the explosion itself(see the smaller box insert). freak out

Our city newspaper did an article recently on the "Cloverfield" film. The basis of their article was the concern over how hype and secrecy could possibly help or harm the film. The writer warned that too much internet hype could lead to another "Snakes On a Plane" letdown, as well as warning that since the film was still over 6 months away, it may be too early to try and get people hyped up about it, as the writer believed by the time the film came out many people might not care anymore. He also wrote that January was typically a Hollwood dumping ground period for poor films. Maybe Abrams figured that would be good as there would be no competition.

Abrams idea for this movie came when he went with his son to Tokyo. He saw Godzilla merchandise and memorabilia. The idea struck him that America needs a "Godzilla" of its own. Hence the "Cloverfield/1-18-08" project.

And also hence my cautious optimism about this project, and belief we're going to see some kind of reptilian or reptilian-like monster, and not something like a "Cthlulu" or some other mythical creature that's a cross between a lion, a squid and Phyllis Diller. tongue-1 God knows after the debacle of Godzilla(1998), the result of Rolan Emmerich and Dean "If fans don't like our Godzilla then they can go to hell" Devlin, we could sure stand for a legitimate, and well rendered monster. The poster art looks, IMO, very cool. Hopefully everything else about Abram's film will too, when it's revealed.

Isn't it amazing how Abrams' monster caused more destruction in that teaser-trailer than Deanzilla caused in an entire movie? B)

I was impressed by the initial amount of destruction in that trailer.

Want to hear the roar of the monster in the upcoming J.J. Abrams monster film that as of yet is officially untitled? Click the link and then click on the "MP3" link(in purple colored lettering). Here's the link to the "Cloverfield" site main page: http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/

I listened to the MP3 of the "roar". My reaction: freak out

Sounds pretty creepy. Albeit, it's not as iconic as Godzilla's famed roar but it is kinda scary.
