It's just weird. I collect different soundtracks and I found that on the Ren and Stimpy Production music. I wonder what it is orignally from? I really like the choice of music and the way this movie was edited for the American Version. |

Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster(1964) - Revisited In the event that I live to be an old geezer I'm inclined to think there will be perhaps fifty or so films on DVD that I'll still fully cherish, and for no more than sentimental reasons. Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster, originally released in Japan to theaters in December of 1964, is one of these films. I have lost count of how many times I've watched it, either as a television broadcast, on VHS, and then DVD. This movie doesn't enthrall me like it did when I was a kid but still manages to cheer me up to some degree every time I watch it, in itself an achievement considering how stressed out and fatigued I get often from day to day aggravations in life. Like other Sunday evenings I spent this one watching the original language, widescreen, English subtitled version on the Classic Media DVD. Some observations, many of which may look familiar from earlier posts...and some that aren't- Thumbs up: 1. each monster in this film, Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah, each have outstanding entrance scenes. 2. the gravity beams of King Ghidorah, which have never looked as destructive as they do in this film. With each impact these beams absolutely blast buildings and other structures to bits. 3. the sequence in which KG forms in the airborne fireball 4. the onscreen rivalry of Godzilla and Rodan: despite my disdain for some effects flaws in the battle sequences between these two monsters, the rivalry and animosity these two leviathans share is never more evident than in this film. 5. many of the effects sequences in this movie, and during the kaiju battles, are all time favorites of mine, including: -Godzilla attempting to square up on KG and being promptly driven back into the bridge -Rodan lifting up Godzilla and then dropping his rival onto the electrical tower -Rodan using himself as an airborne battering ram in colliding head on with King Ghidorah -KG's gravity beams blasting larval Mothra about, the smaller creature tossed upwards by the blasts like a ragdoll -the initial assault by KG, from the air, on the city, a nice combination of the destructive effects of the winds generated by the KG's wings and the withering blasts from the monster's gravity beams 6. larval Mothra's solo assault on KG: obviously very brief and unsuccessful but give the monster credit for trying to take on an opponent despite virtually no chance to win Thumbs down: 1. the various firearms employed by the bad guys, who are tasked with assassinating the Princess. While I didn't expect these guys to brandish combat pistols their sidearms looked and sounded like pop guns. 2. the visibility of wires is fairly common in this movie, something that, for better or worse, only die hard G fans can probably tolerate without a lot of sniping. 3. the way the carrying case for the Infant Island fairies was often handled. From what I could see it would appear the pair of tiny women no doubt, and at times, had to hang on for dear life inside the case, which was not always exactly handled with their safety in mind by Naoko(the reporter) 4. Looking at Susumu Kurobe's skin complexion in this film makes me wonder if he spent some time poolside sunbathing just before the lensing of this movie. 5. the Rodan suit: the neck appeared to be overly long 6. Godzilla appeared to suffer from an overbite, judging by the head of the suit 7. various sequences where hand puppets were used: I'm not a fan of the puppetry arts and I'll leave it at that. Overall: this movie still warms my heart. I suspect it will continue to do so for a long, long time.  The American trailer for Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster(1964): |

Nice re-visit, Lee. :) This has long been a favorite of mine, since my first viewing, actually. This film offers more beasties for your buck and I always thought that was great, as a kid. |

the film is pretty good. besides godzilla raids again, this is where Eiji Tsuburaya shined! ghidorah(the suit) was a masterpiece in effects, three heads, huge, all those scales, and in the scene with godzilla burning the boat, a really cool breath effect, not so much with the later scenes, that mist breath, but it's cheesy fun! my one complaint, godzilla started being more campy, didn't nessicarily like that. and rodan and mothra look terrible! |

i didn't mind the look of Rodan in this film. I didn't care for it in Monster Zero, though. And the whole mist breath thing just didn't work in the day scenes like they did in the night scenes with a little animation like in mothra vs Godzilla. |

Yep. It is actualy new from the R2 DVD... But I know someone who has it on DVD who I shall be buying it from. I do not have to bootleg this vid! Awesome though. But some of that is not making of footage - some of it is from the 1964 Department Store Rooftop publicity event for the film. Yes, there is some Dogora, and last but not least actual Making Of footage... |

Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster - random revisit Once more I sat down and watched the Classic Media R1 DVD of Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster(1964), in Japanese language with English subtitles. Some observations, some positive and some negative - -I couldn't help notice that the policeman and his reporter sister both apparently live in the same house...with their mother. Considering that both are adults wouldn't they presumably be living on their own and in their own apartments? -anyone catch the audio of Rodan as it first emerges from Mt. Aso? It sounds like Godzilla's roar, and not Rodan's, just a second or two. -I still debate in my own mind what really motivated Godzilla and Rodan to join larval Mothra in battle against King Ghidrah. My initial thoughts after watching this film the first few times was that Godzilla and Rodan felt guilt watching the small creature take two full gravity beam blasts against a far more powerful opponent. Then I began to think that maybe this just pissed Godzilla and Rodan off, the two monsters secretly fond of the small larval Mothra but not wanting to admit it during the first monster "convo" the three had.  -as absolutely gorgeous as I've always considered Kumi Mizuno in these 60's films Akiko Wakabayashi(who played Princess Saino) is also a hottie!  -on the airplane, Princess Saino's assistant, played by Eisei Amamoto, looks like he could benefit from some regular dining at the Waffle House, as he appeared to be all of about 120 lbs soaking wet in that uniform of his -I've always thought the Selgina officials uniforms looked tacky, especially those ruffled collars on their shirts |

I will say that I absolutely love this film and it may be my favourite Godzilla film. I wouldn't say it's the best,there are certainly quite a few flaws. A few of the early scenes are a little pointless,resulting some of the first half being very slow to beginners. Also,where's the military? They're just NOT THERE! Perhaps it's one of several signs of the film's rushed production. Yet I just except those and other flaws and get engrossed in the picture every time. As said above the film is a little too slow at first,but the introduction to and build up of Ghidorah's appearance is very good and I always love Toho's incompetent villains [for maybe the wrong reasons]. I do also like the twin fairies/TV show scene,maybe because one of my favourite aspects of the Godzilla series [especially the Showa] is how the monsters kind of live alongside the humans and when a new monster appears it's with a kind of shrug and "o well"!. This scene illustrates that perfectly,and lovely song too. I find some of the Venusian subplot quite intriguing and it could have been developed though maybe in a different film. I will always feel that a few minutes or so of trimming would improve the first half but there's much I like in it anyway. All the monsters get superb first appearances. Rodan's is really suspenseful and almost scary [though he does indeed appear to have Godzilla's roar briefly!]. Godzilla's really moody and simply brilliantly edited. Ghidorah's really spectacular and exciting. Ghidorah's destruction scene still pretty stunning [and Toho thought so too,they reused most of it twice in the 70s!]. Godzilla and Rodan's battle is silly but I really LIKE the silliness. You'd never get rarely see a humorous battle [correct me if I'm wrong]. in a western monster film. No ,it's not realistic but realism was never an issue to start with after the first two films. To me funny stuff like Godzilla and Rodan playing ball as Mothra's head turns to follow the rock that is being batted is an important part of my love for these movies! For the climax everything comes together brilliantly. From a critical point of view I can name for or five Godzilla films that,artistically,are better overall,but I don't think the series ever had a climax better than this one. The battle is humorous in places but totally thrilling,well thought out [such as the random attacks by the good monsters becoming more coordinated],of a perfect length, and really quite rousing when combined with Akira Ifikube's music, I just feel like cheering every time I watch it. The feeling almost makes me feel like a kid again. The US version is inferior but I treasure it for the "Godzilla,mind your language" line,and some,though not all,of the added music works well I think. The film is not at all perfect but I think it's the Godzilla film I adore,and certainly watch,most. |
