I figured I would start a thread to talk about college football since we don't have one yet. I may watch more college games than NFL this year considering I am off Saturdays but have to work on Sundays. I guess the biggest thing happening this week was no. 5 Michigan losing to Applachian state, a small school (I think they were AA). What an upset. Things are looking pretty sour now for the Wolverines and I am wondering what is going to happen to their status now. By this weekend they may not even be ranked at all. My local team, the UT Longhorns barely avoided an upset themselves with a marginal win over Arkansas st., 21-13. Next week the have to play TCU who is ranked no. 22. TCU looked promising on Saturday and I can almost smell an upset if the Longhorns dont get their act together. |

Thanks Josh. thumbs up Indeed. It's being called the college football upset of the century. Appalachian State, a small, division I-AA school located in Boone, North Carolina, is a member of the Southern Conference and has won the last two I-AA national titles(I-AA has a 16 team single elimination playoff annually to detemine its champion). "App State" has been a perennial I-AA playoff team since the 1980's-my alma mater, The Citadel, is also a member of the Southern Conference. The Mountaineers proved that I-AA teams can compete, even defeat the I-A teams(with generally more depth and larger lineman) on any given day. There have already been calls for Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr's ouster, which I think are justified. The Wolverines were clearly not prepared to play well this past Saturday, which is the head coach's responsibility. The Wolverines, who were ranked #5 in the nation when they were defeated by Appalachian State, will surely drop to the bottom end of the top twenty, if not out altogether. I expect the Wolverines will bounce back, perhaps win 8-9 games this year. That said their national championship aspirations flew out the window when they lost at home to a I-AA opponent. Hook em.

Well there were no real big upsets or huge suprises this week, maybe with the exception of Auburn getting burned by South Florida, but a few interesting games nonetheless. The Oklahoma Sooners stomped Miami very handily 51-13, this win was expected but the Sooners level of play has people predicting they will come out on top of the Big 12. Boise State had their 14 game winning streak snapped after a suprising loss to unranked Washington. No. 1 ranked USC did not play. The most talked about game though was probably 9 ranked Virginia Tech and 2nd ranked LSU, which actually didn't turn out to be much of a game as the Tigers defense really took it to Tech's QB Sean Glennon. After a scoreless first half, Tech finally got on the board when their backup QB rushed the endzone for their only points of the game, as this one finished 48-7. |

LSU's defense appears to be dominant and I think will carry this team all year long. Unlike Sunday's NFL scores, I was delighted by my teams performances on Saturday. Georgia Tech won easily(as they were suppoed to) against Samford, 69-14. The Yellow Jackets are now ranked #15 in the national polls. My alma matter, The Citadel, blasted Weber International 76-0. My other favorite college team, Ohio State, won in a workmanlike way, defeating Akron 20-2. I was a little surprised at how handily Oklahoma handled the Miami Hurricanes. Miami's head coach, Randy Shannon, himself a former Hurricanes player, has a lot of work to do to get the Canes back to national prominence. I also was surprised that UAB(Alabama Birmingham) nearly defeated the Florida State Seminoles, and in Tallahassee! The Blazers were ahead for much of this game before the Noles won it, 34-24. Should Florida State struggle again this year in the won-loss column, look for head coach Bobby Bowden to step down. |

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy took exception, last weekend, with an article written by a female reporter regarding OSU's backup QB Bobby Reid. Click the link to see coach Gundy's animated reaction to the article: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VytIZZzee0 I believe Mike Gundy was simply sticking up for one of his players, though his angry speech has been assailed by, not surprisingly, the media. The reporter who wrote the article Gundy took exception to, Jenni Carlson, stands by her article. |

Been awhile since I posted here, just havent had alot of time to sit down and watch games with all the household stuff going on. Anyway I was able to catch the Texas-OU game which, while not being a blowout as predicted, still handed the Longhorns their second straight loss and ended any real hopes for a Big 12 championship. In happier news, USC was upset by Stanford 23-24, and Notre Dame finally got a victory against UCLA. I guess Weis can breathe a bit easier for the time being. Last I checked the AP polls, undefeated LSU was still holding the top spot with newcomer Cal Berkley in at number 2. What's up with Boston College this year? I havent seen any of their games but they really have come out of nowhere. Illinois pulled another upset and took out Wisconsin, these guys deserve a shot at the top 25 in my opinion. |

"The Great Weiss Hope" is perhaps going to be a little more relaxed this week after upsetting UCLA this past weekend, Josh. Recall that Notre Dame signed Weiss to a very long term deal that makes him one of the highest paid college football coaches in the country. That said Notre Dame will be lucky if they win maybe two more games on their schedule and that's it. There will be considerable pressure from the Notre Dame president and alumni association for Weiss to improve on what's sure to be a miserable season this year. |

To their credit, Notre Dame usually has a pretty tough schedule. In years past watching their games, I always see them playing someone decent and rarely notice them playing small schools, like alot of other teams. Maybe it's because they are in that "independent" conference or whatever. I'm not sure I really understand how that works. I know they pour alot of money into their football program though and this year has definetly been a dissapointment. Someome told me the other day that they had some sort of "exclusive" contract to have their games televised nationally. Do you know anything about that, Lee? Does that have anything to do with why they are calssified as independent? |

Yes. Notre Dame has a contract with NBC. NBC televises both road and home Notre Dame games. No. In collegiate football, Josh, a college's board of directors usually has control over which athletic conference, if any, that their school is a member of. Recall Josh that Florida State and Penn State used to be "independents:, that is, colleges whose sports teams did not affiliate, in any way, with any of the athletic conferences. In 1992, and after several years of contemplation, Florida States board of directors voted to apply for membership in the ACC and were accepted a short time later. FSU decided it would benefit from membership in the ACC, a conference with a good academic reputation and an increasingly good reputation, and W-L record, versus schools from other conferences. The ACC increased its legitimacy as a conference power in football by accepting in FSU, which under Bobby Bowden had become a powerhouse football program. Both benefited, which is why teams join, or often switch conferences. Penn State used to be an independent and joined the Big Ten for the same reasons FSU joined the ACC. Notre Dame is one of the few I-A football teams still without any conference membership of any kind. With their alumni base and storied football history my guess is their board of directors deems their schools affiliation with a conference unnecessary. Notre Dame's contract with NBC is very lucrative for the school as well as the network. There have been rumors in recent years that ND might join the Big Ten but obviously so far it hasn't happened. Sorry for the rambling here Josh. |

More upsets in College ball this week, man it has been a crazy season. number 1 ranked LSU and 2 ranked Cal both lost, leaving I believe only 5 or 6 teams left undefeated. Boston College and South Florida? Wow. Experts are predicting Ohio State to fall in as the new number 1, which seems to be an increasingly unlucky spot to be in this year. My question is how is the oddball Hawaii going to fall in this week with it's undefeated record? The polls don't take too kindly to the WAC, but since theres so few undefeated teams this year maybe they will count for something. EDIT: It's true, the Buckeyes are currently number 1, with South Florida and BC rounding out the top 3. LSU fell to number 5 and Cal dropped to 10. After an impressive victory over Missouri, OU is up to #4 and the lone Big 12 team in the top ten. |

Probably too high. Hawaii is coached by June Jones. The offense of the Rainbows is, as always, very good. Their defense is, as always, very mediocre and often bad. They might, Josh, but I still wouldn't bet on it...that is if I were a betting man. ( ) The WAC, Western Athletic Conference, has long had, and justifiably IMO, a reputation for fielding a lot of teams with great offenses and soft defenses, one reason why so many WAC teams are often pummeled by opponents from stronger conferences like the PAC-10, SEC, Big 12, ACC and Big East. I like BYU and Air Force but I doubt if either of these teams could hang with power teams from the other aforementioned conferences. If I remember correctly the last WAC team to win a national title was in 1984 when BYU did it. I still would like to see either an 8 or 16 team single elimination playoffs in I-A football. It was posted today that Nebraska AD Steve Pederson was fired, presumably because of Nebraska's blowout home field loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 45-14. There have been, actually, calls for Steve Pederson's ouster, and head coach Bill Callahan's, since Nebraska was blasted the week before by Missouri 41-6. There is no doubt that Nebraska, right now, and for the past five years, has fallen a notch in it's previous standing as a national powerhouse. This team has surrendered 40+ points to opponents in its last four consecutive games. Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan just recently signed a five year extension. Prediction: Callahan's contract will be bought out at the end of this college football season. |

Callahan may be out, and so may Texas A and M's Franchione. The natives are getting pretty restless out here for his ouster. They even have a website up now, www.firedennisfranchione.com

In a related development to this quote, Nebraska's board of regents has hired, on an interim basis, Tom Osborne to assume the duties of AD and also to help assess the status of Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan at the end of this season. Osborne, himself a former head of Nebraska, retired after the team won back to back titles in 1994 and 1995. |
