"That was some meal. I don't think I'll need to eat for a week," John Gabriel casually lamented, moving burning cedar embers around in the cabin fireplace with the black metal stoker. "My mom was a good cook and taught me how to handle myself in a kitchen," Kerren Greiss said, standing beside the dark haired, dark eyed ex Army green beret. Gabriel glanced at the brown eyed blonde and nodded. "You're a man of generally few words, John Gabriel," Kerren commented. "What's there to talk about?" Gabriel asked, looking into the blondes' eyes. "Well, how about why you left the Army?" Kerren replied, sipping a mix of whiskey and dark cola from a coffee mug. Gabriel lit a short cigarillo and pocketed his Zippo lighter, allowing the fumes from the thin cigar to waft upwards around his head. "There's not much to tell. I clocked a superior officer and I got court-martialed. That's it," Gabriel said, staring at the burning embers in the cabin fireplace. "What happened?" the blonde asked. "We were in Iraq. Baghdad. I was asked to interrogate several suspected insurgents. The CIA usually had their own people for that kind of thing. At the time they were in another province so my CO ordered me and two other officers to question these informants. One of them was a young woman, Anadi. She was homeless. Lived in the streets. I tried to tell the brass...but they were convinced she was funneling information about our movements into Barak, a nearby town with a large number of well armed Al Qeda insurgents. I was asked to torture this woman. I refused the order. My CO, Colonel Beck, went ballistic, put his sidearm to my temple and ordered me to break Anadi's fingers, one at a time, until she started talking. I refused the order. Beck tried to pistol whip me. I got the upper hand on him and managed to knock out about four of his teeth before I was brought down by the bastards' security detail," Gabriel said. "Why were you so sure this woman was just an innocent civilian?" Kerren Greiss asked. Gabriel looked at the blonde. "She took a round for me once...in her leg. One of the medics pulled the bullet out and patched her up. She refused to go to our med tent. She wouldn't have done that unless she was on our side," Gabriel declared clearly. There was a moment of silence. "There was no way I could hurt this woman. I just couldn't...not after what she had done for me," Gabriel said, smoking his cigarillo. "Even though it cost you your Army career I think you did the right thing," Kerren said. "Yeah. Some difference it made. I got word that Anadi was killed by a CIA interrogator a week later," Gabriel muttered sourly. The blonde shook her head in disapproval... "What the hell?" Gabriel snapped, looking at the primary cabin glass window. "What?" Kerren said in a near shout. The ex Army green beret glanced back at the blonde as he grabbed the nickel plated .45 pistol from his duffel bag. "Something just moved past the window!" Gabriel snapped urgently, chambering a round in the combat pistol. "Wait," Kerren said clearly. "Kerren I just saw something fairly large outside. It's probably a bear. It may be rabid and-" "It's not a bear," Kerren said calmly. John Gabriel frowned, looking at his blonde companion. He looked upwards, hearing something moving about on the roof of the cabin...and then a deep, menacing growl. "You're right. That's no bear!" Gabriel said, sticking two extra clips of ammo in his jacket pocket and heading for the cabin door. "John, there's something I should tell you." Gabriel stopped at the door and turned around to face Kerren. His dark eyes widened as he looked at what had been his lovely blonde companion...and was now partially covered in light brown hair, ears abnormally elongated, enlarged amber colored eyes, feet that resembled paws, an almost dog like nose and fangs. "Oh fuck me!" Gabriel said under his breath, aiming his pistol at what had been Kerren Greiss. "No, wait. Let me explain!" the Kerren thing said, its voice deep and raspy, but still retaining part of the blondes' North Carolina drawl. Gabriel nearly urinated in his fatigues from the shock of the blondes' transformation into the animal thing. For a moment he considered that this was another one of his bad dreams...until he saw the saliva drip from the Kerren thing's mouth and spatter on the floor. The Kerren-thing started to move towards the ex Army officer. "Do not come any closer! Do you fucking hear me!" Gabriel barked loudly, his hand trembling. The cabin window shattered as the hulking creature blasted through it, landing and skidding against the small dinette table. "No! He's mine dammit!" the Kerren thing hissed. Gabriel stared in fascination at the second creature, which reared up on it's hind legs and snarled at the ex Army officer. "You can't have him! He is mine!" the Kerren-thing snarled. In the span of about ten seconds John Gabriel watched as the blonde Forestry ranger further transformed, until she had taken on an appearance like the other. Gabriel kept his pistol trained on the second, darker looking monster. "This ain't fucking happening. Jesus Christ!" Gabriel muttered. His mind raced. The two creatures resembled something out of a horror movie: bipedal, covered in hair, yellow-eyed, with claw-like fingernails and dog like paws for feet, their heads and ears enlarged, both baring fangs. Gabriel jumped as the darker furred beast let out a bloodcurdling howl. Then it attacked. Gabriel fired but the beast had seized him by the arm and in a span of three seconds tossed him across the cabin. Gabriel crashed against the wall and landed hard on his back. "That's going to leave a mark," he said aloud, grabbing the black metal stoker. The hulking wolf-like creature came at him again. Gabriel hammered at its head, landing one hard blow. The monster shrieked in pain and briefly retreated. Gabriel looked over at what had been his blonde friend. The Kerren-thing attempted to block the darker furred creature from another attack on Gabriel. The second beast slammed the Kerren-beast against the wall and drew it's clawed, hairy hand back for a strike...then shrieked as John Gabriel stabbed it in the back with the metal stoker. The dark furred monster managed to scratch the former soldier across the arm before it whacked him across the chest, Gabriel sent flying backwards and into the far side cabin wall. The creature, unable to remove the stoker from it's back, leaped through the broken cabin window and raced off into the darkness. Gabriel staggered to the window to try and get off a shot with his .45 but the hostile monster was gone, disappeared into the woods. "Shit!" Gabriel said loudly as the remaining creature seized him by the throat and pushed him against the cabin wall. "What in hell are you?" Gabriel managed, the Kerren-beast holding him against the wall, it's amber-colored eyes studying him. "Survived two fucking wars and now I'm going to be scragged by some kind of goddamn backwoods mutant," Gabriel said. He peered into the monster's eyes. "You're not all monster are you? There's still a part of Kerren inside there isn't there? I saved your life. That's got to count for something. You hear me? I saved your goddamn life!" The beast released John Gabriel and backed away. The creature slapped the pistol out of Gabriel's hand and picked it up off the floor. It tossed the gun out the window and glared back at the ex Army green beret. "What are you?" Gabriel asked aloud. He jumped as the creature let out an eerie howl. "You sound like a wolf. Look kind of like one too," Gabriel hissed, his dark eyes trained on what had been, ten minutes ago, Kerren Greiss. "If you're going to kill me...just get it over with will you?" Gabriel said loudly. The creature howled again and briefly snarled at him, baring some large canines. "Alright. Don't then," Gabriel said, uncapping the bottle of Jack Daniels, his hands trembling. He threw down a shot of the whiskey, then another. "I suppose you don't drink," Gabriel said, looking at the hairy, wolf-like creature, then at the bottle. "No, I suppose not," Gabriel finished. He watched as the creature settled down onto the floor. It's movements reminded him of a dog, the way a canine would set itself down in order to go to sleep. "I'm too old for this shit," Gabriel grumbled. He sat down on the floor and began consuming more shots of whiskey. If I'm going to die then I might as well die drunk off my ass, Gabriel thought. Though he was scared shitless as the creature growled, not twelve feet away from him, John Gabriel managed to pass out after continuing to drink from the whiskey bottle... Seven hours later... John Gabriel opened his eyes and bolted upright. Kerren Greiss was sitting nearby, looking disheveled, her uniform tattered and dirty. She was putting on a new pair of socks. She slid the .45 pistol across the floor to the ex Army officer. Gabriel looked down at the gun. "What the fuck are you?" Gabriel said loudly. Kerren Greiss knotted her wheat colored blonde hair up and began placing on her boots, without answering. "I asked you a question. What are you and what happened here last night?" Gabriel snapped loudly, picking up the gun. The brown eyed blonde looked up at him, her eyes beginning to yellow. Gabriel cocked the pistol...and watched Kerren's eyes return to normal. "I was going to explain...but, obviously I was interrupted," the blonde replied. "Explain...explain what?" Gabriel asked, getting to his feet stiffly. He felt like he'd been run over by a truck. "It's not safe for you here...anymore. We need to leave," Kerren Greiss said. "Leave? You haven't even told me what in the name of God happened here last night. You changed...right in front of my eyes...into some kind of goddamned monster!" Gabriel said urgently. "The transformation is based on a virus which, once it takes hold, melds with the host DNA and can be triggered by emotions, both good and bad though most of Dr. Hobbes' research suggests anger is the main trigger-""Stop! What are you talking about?" Gabriel said in a near shout, cutting Kerren off in mid sentence. "What you saw last night John was two people infected with a virus, similar to the rabus virus. This one's been modified and includes wolf DNA," Kerren said, lacing up her work boots. John Gabriel started to laugh, then stopped when he saw the blonde glare at him. "Human-animal crossbreeding research was first funded back in 1962 by our own government. It took nearly twenty years for the research to progress to the creation of the Canis Alpha virus. A viral infection that enables it's host to transform, through hormonal reactions in the body, into a physically enhanced, humanoid variant of the common wolf," the blonde stated clearly. "A werewolf, John," Kerren Greiss finished. "This is all bullshit," John Gabriel said, disbelieving. "You were part of what happened last night. You saw what happened to me...and the other creature. There are more of them out there John. There are packs all over this country, all living in seclusion in small towns like this one. I made an enemy last night by trying to keep my friend from attacking and eating you," Kerren said. "Thanks, by the way," Gabriel said, incredulously. The blonde managed a wry grin. "Why didn't you kill me? You had me by the throat. You could have..." "Ripped you apart? Yeah. That's why you were sent up here. So I could feed. Bill Hobbes knows I don't like hunting people down...so he arranged for you to come up here," Kerren said. "And right to the dinner plate," Gabriel finished. Kerren nodded slowly. "You haven't answered my question. Why didn't you kill me?" Gabriel asked again. "You saved my life," Kerren said. "You understood what I said to you...while you were...that thing?" Gabriel asked in disbelief. "I can understand most of what people say. I can't talk back because of the change in my vocal chords...obviously. All I can do is growl...and drool," Kerren said wistfully. Gabriel looked at the scratch on his arm. "You're infected and...yes you will turn...eventually," the brown-eyed blonde said gravely. John Gabriel shook his head in anger. "I don't want this..goddamnit," Gabriel said, kicking over the table. "It doesn't matter now. It's done. There's no reversing the virus John. This isn't about silver bullets, crucifixes, moonstones and garlic. This is science, pure and simple," Kerren said, walking over to the ex Army officer and placing her hand on his shoulder. "What the fuck am I supposed to do now?" Gabriel asked, looking at Kerren. "For now accept it. We're going to have to fight our way out of here John," the blonde declared. "Why?" Gabriel asked, his dark eyes narrowing. "Because at this very moment the creature you saw last night is planning on coming back and killing both us." Barrows, NC "I'm going to kill that bitch, Bill!" Valerie Roberson said, the black woman loading ammo into the shotgun while she peered out the window of her small one bedroom apartment. "Val our ability to exist in anonymity is based on not making any waves...or in your case any corpses," Dr. William Hobbes said, sliding on his trousers. "I should start charging you for this. You aren't even that good in bed," Valerie Roberson snapped. "Remember who you're talking to," Hobbes said menacingly. "Look, let me kill the white bitch and her soldier boy friend. Me and two of my girlfriends got it all planned out Bill," Valerie said. "Tell you what, you tell me how you're going to go about killing Kerren and John. If I like your plan I'll give you permission," Hobbes said. "And if you don't?" the black woman said clearly. The older bearded man approached her. He grabbed her by the throat and pushed her against the wall, his head and face becoming misshapen, large fangs sprouting from his mouth as his eyes narrowed to slits. "Then I'm going to rip your black ass apart! the Hobbes thing said in a deep, raspy voice. |
