Aside from reading up on such things as the alleged existence of Bigfoot, UFO's & other oddities of science, the subject of the end of our world has always interested me. There has been debate, ad nauseam, about how our planet will meet its end. Theories abound. There are those that believe in scenarios based on the Bible, others that are based on scientific principle(s). Scientific possibilities discussed include the possibility that the Earth will be struck one day by a colossal asteroid or comet, one large enough and traveling fast enough to destroy the Earth on impact.
I have personally read one theory in which it is postulated that as our sun begins to die it will release larger solar flares, some with the equivalent energy of millions of hydrogen bombs that would impact our planet, burning, literally, Earth to a crisp.
Alien invasion is a common theme as well: malevolent extraterrestrials invade the planet Earth, presumably for purposes of colonization, like something out of the H.G. Welles sci-fi classic War Of The Worlds.
There have many among us who have declared the end of the world and obviously been proven wrong by the simple fact that we continue to exist.
The only thing scientists seem to agree on is that the existence of Earth is finite and that our planet will one day cease to exist.
Talk about your own feelings and opinions regarding the end of our planet, and anything(links, photos, video clips) that might be related.
All replies welcome. :)

The world will end by the end of nineteen ninety nine... oh, wait... :)

I believe that the sun will like, start heating up or something when it gets closer to its own end, burning the life away from Earth before effectively melting it and its brothers from sheer heat.

I did not say when exactly it would happen, now, did I?

Nope, but the scientists in the article believe it will happen far, far into the future. I believe that we will have colonized another planet of some kind before our own planet Earth is roasted.

This "End of The World!" talk has been going on for centuries, of course, the world will end one day, everything ends, but for all you know it could end in a Billion years!
I will say though, that pollution, global warming etc, isn't helping in the least. Because of such things it's quite likely that many species (including humans) will die off over time, but the world ending, that's a different story.
'The void is that which stands right in the middle between this and that. The void is all-inclusive, having no opposite — there is nothing which it excludes or opposes. It is living void, because all forms come out of it and whoever realizes the void is filled with life and power and the love of all things' - Bruce Lee

I've seen a lot of discussion about the possibility of humanity, that is, upright humans or homo erectus, "branching" off into another subspecies(I've seen images that appear to be a grotesque looking pygmy-like humanoid). There's also those who believe we may one day create a race of artificially intelligent androids, automatons that are sentient, that is "self aware". freak out

I fear the same thing, and to be honest, the way things are going, one day it might actually happen.
Whenever I watch The Terminator (the first one), I never really think of it as a sci-fi; think about it:

1) He has a metal skeleton, these skeletons can be built but for the moment they wouln't be able to walk, as walking robots are still at a very early stage.
2) He has a chip that enables him to think, even if it's artificial it is actually possible to enable inannimate objects to think now.
A good example of this are military missiles, or even the AI in a video game; if you play games like Super Smash Bros Melee against the computer you'll find that it will try to kill you. Now, couldn't other things be programmed to kill as well?
3) He has flesh and organs created especially for cyborgs.
It's recently been possible to clone/create human organs, what if such things could be implemented into a robot?

In Japan, robots are becoming more intelligent and human-looking everyday. I give it 50 years until we have a perfect cyborg.
The rate at which things are evolving this should be perfectly posssible.
Don't you agree Packmule?

Regarding the content of you last post? Generally, yes.

Like you I can see a future one day where robots, androids, or whatever else they're going to be called, are an everyday sight among society, much like in the films Artificial Intelligence and I Robot. I thought the movie Artificial Intelligence was marvelous. It takes a peek, at the end, about two thousand years into our future-there's another ice age and humanity no longer exists.

Have you seen this film Johnny? heyo

Here's a trailer for the 2001 Steven Spielberg directed film Artificial Intelligence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la0aP_UPKWg&feature=related

On a radio show this morning a theory was being discussed, regarding human mating patterns, and, as carzy as it sounds, some scientists believe over time that there may be seperate types of species of human beings. Because "pretty" people only generally mate with other pretty people, and "uglier" people only with other ugly people, these scientists believed that over time we will evolve to two species, an extremely well featured one, and another species of uglier, possibly even deformed, human "ogre" like people. It sounds far-fetched, and it probably is, but it was interesting nonetheless. I wonder how something like this could bring about the end of the world. It is certainly possible, especially if one side declared themselves superior and tried to persecute or segregate the other.

This depends a bit on what your definition of "end of the world" would be. The scenario you describe, which I actually believe remotely possible, could cause the end of the future split-race of humanity, but that would be about it. End of the planet Earth? Not so much...

Thusly, in a way, the world would not be "ours" anymore. It'd be the end of our world, and there'd be no history to record after that. cross eyed

I have done, yes. :)
Very good film, though I can't say it's the type of film that I'd watch very often since it depresses me, much like Blade Runner, and Minority Report. For some reason futuristic films make me feel sad.
A good film though.

Well, it could be because the vast majority of them portray the future, immediate and non-immediate, as bleak or even apocalyptic.

Films that come to mind, in which the future is depicted in a negative manner:

The Time Machine(1960) & The Time Machine(2002)(remake)

Waterworld(1995)

The Terminator(1984) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day(1991)

Blade Runner(1982)
