This is a question that has always intrigued me with movies and musical albums as well, basically what will our next form of media be? How will we watch movies in the future once the disc based format of dvd, blu-ray etc. become obsolete? Will everything be digitally downloaded off the internet? Will movies be put on some kind of tiny microchips with no moving parts so the movies never skip or get scratched? Any predictions for this format of the future?

I have often wondered about this myself. Here's some musings from tech expert Chrostpher Null, who touches on things we may, or may not see, following current DVD and HD DVD technology: http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/57545

An interesting article. thumbs up

Mine: we're going to see smaller discs, and with greater storage capacity, without the loss of ultra sharp clarity in the images.

Nice article.

I liked the part about the flash drives, that is my hope for the next form of media. With no moving parts it would be so much easier to take care of as opposed to discs that can get scratched and skip.

I was thinking about the download thing, but honestly I really dont see that one happening anytime soon. There really just arent enough people yet that have internet or even computers, let alone credit cards to buy the movies online. Besides, I think right now, people feel more comfortable with owning a "boxed" film as opposed to paying online and owning a file of a movie on a hard drive. The sense of ownership really isnt the same. It would save space in your house, though.

Here's an article that touches on an Indian scientists' development of a light sensitive protein that can be coated onto DVDs and, according to its inventor, may render hard drives obsolete: http://in.tech.yahoo.com/060708/139/65pz8.html
