Why is HDTV so damn popular? All it does is give you a clearer picture, and the equipment usually costs you $4000 total...what's the point?

I thought as you did, and for the longest. Then last year I went into a Circuit City store and bought, at the urging of a friend, a 32" hi def "Olevia" flat screen television capable of producing about 720p in picture clarity. I paid $499 plus tax for this unit, which was on sale. I was immediately impressed by how light it was(only about 40 lbs)-considering some analog behemoths I've had(including a 36" standard def TV I just gave away to a co-worker and that weighed 150 lbs) I was very pleased that it would not break my back hauling this unit into my residence and setting it up.

My unit, like other 720p and 1080p(the best) hi-def TVs, comes with multiple a/v jacks, an HDMI(high definition multi interface) jack and component video jacks. It also can be connected to my computer, if I so desired. With an "upconversion" DVD player the picture quality, and audio, was slightly better when I played DVDs on my HD TV. After investing in and buying a Samsung Blu-Ray DVD player, and connecting it to my HDTV, I can tell you that the sound and audio are noticeably improved.

Consider also, Smythe, that by February, 2009 all cable signal providers in the United States will have to broadcast their signals in high definition. If you already have a 720p or 1080p HDTV you don't have to do anything. If you own a standard def TV and want to receive cable after February, 2009 you'll have to either rent or purchase a "converter" box, which, attached to your TV, converts or downgrades the HD cable signal into a standard signal your analog(CRT-cathode ray tube) TV can receive.

Most 26" HDTVS can be purchased, when on sale, for between $359-$469. Most 32" HDTV's can be purchased, when on sale, for between $499-$599. 37" models start at $649(if on sale) and can range up to $799 or higher, and so forth.

I've been mulling getting a larger HDTV for another room in my residence but I may opt for another 32" unit. Best Buy usually has 32" HDTVs on sale around xmas for $499 plus tax.

I have to say I was slow to get into the HDTV era but after making the move into that area I can say it's well worth it. I mean the level of detail is amazing. It's like almost being there, it's definitely not just hype. I say don't knock it until you try it. And like pack stated, it's really not all that expensive to get into the HDTV era at this point in time

I love my HD-TV. The hi-definition channels look beautiful. My favorite channels, History Channel and Discovery, are fantastic. Sports look great. Hell, even the news and game shows like Jeopardy are more enjoyable in hi-definition. My girlfriend loves American Idol and let me say, the show looks damn great in hi-def. Plus, HD-TVs are all wide-screen so the days of compressing my rectangular DVD images down to smaller sizes to fit my old analogue TV square box are over.

CNET has a site devoted to high definition televisions. I bookmarked this site because it looks interesting and also because as someone with only a basic understanding of HD(or a little less tongue-1) I could benefit from this site. The link: http://www.cnet.com/hdtv-world/

That article is so true...I went into Circuit City once and it was like a ghost town...there was like no one around...and there wasn't a Best Buy or anything around for miles (this was while I was in Georgia). But I will say this, they were the only place that had the video game I wanted thumbs up

Hehe, it sure did Dan. We were watching it last night. It looked awesome in HD. I'm gonna DVR the last airing tonight. I might also add that we watched the LOTR Trilogy on TNT-HD. Words can't describe how it looked. Simply beautiful.

Russ, can you edit out commercials recording this way?

Has anyone been watching the Star Wars Trilogy 4-6 on Spike HD? DishNetwork carries Spike but not in HD yet. Just curious to hear how it looks.

Hmm, I don't think so Pack. But i'll double check just to make sure. I think Tivo does that though.

EDIT: Unfortunately no Pack. I can't find anything here in the manual that allows me to edit out commercials.

I think my favorite HD channels are National Geographic, (love Naked Science) History Channel, (The Universe program looks awesome in HD) ESPN, and Monsters HD.

^I've been watching Deadliest Catch all weekend on Discovery-HD. Good stuff. I'm addicted to this show. Also, I can't wait to see some new Ice Road Truckers in HD.

Comcast gives us a station called Mojo-HD. It's cool stuff because they often play IMAX features and let me tell you they are the most gorgeous programs I've seen on my TV.
