A very good internet friend of mine, Clark West, aka Sparkiegojira at various discussion boards, including this one, was responsible for the creation of a topic thread at Monster Zero called The Fortean Crypt Of Real Life Horrors, which was dedicated to Charles Hoy Fort, an American writer and researcher, born in 1874, and who died in 1932. Fort's life work centered around "anomalous phenomena", and there is certainly, even now, plenty of that still prevalent in today's society. This topic thread is dedicated to all those crazy, unusual and bizarre things we all read about from time to time, on the internet, and also in the newspaper. I make this topic in honor of Charles Fort and also Clark West, for starting the very first "Fortean" thread at MZ. :)

Thread starter: Marriage. The subject has always made me a little uneasy, especially when I was involved in a serious relationship. Imagine how it must feel to the man who is the topic of this article-seems this guy's decision to have carnal relations with a goat has permanent ramifications: Sudanese Man Forced To Marry Goat

Assinine news byte of the week, from Chuck Shepherd's "News Of The Weird":

Fight Club: Students from rival campus organizations at the Dawood Engineering College in Karachi, Pakistan, had fistfights and threw furniture at each other in a January confrontation over which group should get credit for putting up posters urging students not to fight on campus. [Daily Times (Lahore, Pakistan), 1-28-07]

very funny

Bullfighting remains a popular spectator sport in Spain and in Mexico, despite the many injuries sustained by matadors, and fans. In an incident in Mexico City, in January of 2006, a 1000 lb bull named Pajarito(English translation: "Little Bird"), perhaps bored and frustrated with his routine, leaped over a security fence and proceeded to gore several fans in the stands, one seriously, before a matador managed to reach the huge bull and slay the animal with a sword. The article link: "Pajarito" bullish on fans

Image-Bull Run: Pajarito, a half-ton bull, goes for an unwelcome stroll in the stands of a Mexico City bullfighting arena, shortly before he's killed by a matador(January, 2006). This incident, in which several people were seriously injured by the animal, led to, not surprisingly, calls for better protection of fans at these bullfighting events.

I've seen video of this happening a time or two and can only say, being a fan isn't a safe passtime in those arenas!

I have always been a law abiding citizen. I believe that without laws we as a society would be in serious trouble. Turns out, however, that many laws are hard to understand, and even harder to break. Consider some of these laws, still on the books, in the great state of Texas:

1. One must acknowledge a supreme being before being able to hold public office.

2. When two trains meet each other at a railroad crossing, each shall come to a full stop, and neither shall proceed until the other has gone.

3. It is illegal to take more than three sips of beer at a time while standing.

4. It is illegal for one to shoot a buffalo from the second story of a hotel.

5. A recently passed anti-crime law requires criminals to give their victims 24 hours notice, either orally or in writing, and to explain the nature of the crime to be committed.

6. Lions are prohibited from attending the theater.

I also came across this article today. Seems a train in Jakarta, Indonesia was transporting a corpse, for nearly half a day, before anyone even noticed: Indonesian train carries dead man for half a day before anyone notices

:<!--emo&lol:-->Posted Image<!--endemo--> I love reading some of the wacky laws that are still on the books, those were some wonderful examples.

Ugh! That was kind of cheeky sick smiley about that poor train-riding corpse! My Uncle flew to Texas, last year to see some friends and the woman in the asile seat next to my Uncle had died in-flight with nobody aware. freak out

More eyebrow raising stories:

-some folks rely on an alarm clock to get them out of bed. For one couple, and on one particular morning, no alarm clock was needed, courtesy of a 500 lb grizzly bear: Grin and bear it: couple awakened by grizzly attack on moose

-in this story a 500 lb moose ends up being an unwitting passenger in an automobile:
Moose ado about nothing: moose an unlikely passenger in car

-in Stateline, NV a juvenile bear cub found some unexpected treats inside a Buick convertible: junk food, whiskey and beer: Bear cub enjoys brief stay in Buick convertible

-in this dated(2006) article, a bear in Golden, British Columbia(Canada) displays an unusual determination to avoid neutering: Bearzilla avoids the knife

-a recently killed super-sized boar is going to be featured in a horror film: Hogtied: infamous swine "Hogzilla" to be featured in horror movie

On May 1st fishermen in Thailand, fishing along the banks of the Mekong River, hauled in a catfish that measured nearly nine feet in length and weighed 646 lbs. Though it's not official the early consensus is that this enormous catfish is, in all probability, a world record for size, regarding freshwater fish. Click the link to see this giant fish: Gone fishing: Thai fishermen reel in a giant

Back to the subject of bears, in particular the North American grizzly, males average 600-800 lbs in weight and a standing height of 6-8'. There are specimens that grow larger. In September of 2005 a U.S. Forestry Ranger in Alaska shot and killed a charging grizzly that is now considered, officially, the largest bear ever recorded. This animal weighed over 1600 lbs and measured 12.5' at the shoulder, on it's hind legs, or 14' at the top of it's head. freak out To give you an idea of this bear's awesome size a man who is 6' tall would look into the navel of this bear if it was standing upright, or into it's eyes if it were on all fours. The link with more info, and pics, of this giant grizzly:
http://rbenson.wordpress.com/2005/09/16/worlds-largest-bear/

What struck me in particular about pics of this grizzly was the size of it's paw in the photo. freak out

In other bizarre news:

-in Essen, Germany a man was found dead in his bed...seven years after he actually died: The big sleep: deceased man found in bed seven years later

-a house cat managed to survive a trip from China to Hendersonville, NC in a crate, for thirty-five days, and without food or water: Catskills: cat survives odyssey trip in crate

More "Fortean" news:

-in Berlin, Germany a customer entering the lobby of a bank's ATM found a man asleep, and a horse standing beside the sleeping man: Horsing around: drunkard found in ATM lobby, along with horse

-in San Antonio, TX an eight-foot long alligator made life, temporarily, miserable for local police officers after stopping to take in the surrounding scenery...on a highway: Gator aid: police move gator to ease traffic tie up

-in Winnipeg, Manitoba(Canada) John Samborski must now pick up his mail at the local post office. Seems the letter carrier will no longer deliver his mail after being frightened by Samborski's "very threatening cat": Cat's in the cradle: hostile house cat scares local letter carrier

-a couple in upstate New York found a real stinker, in every sense of the word, in their attic: 3500 lbs of bat droppings. The article link: Left Behind: couple discover 3500 lbs of bat guano in attic

freak out Ugh! The bat-droppings would be horrible. I recall my younger brother Michael and his wife and family rented a home that had a horrible bat problem. I was still working second shift at the time and arrived at my apartment around 2:00AM one morning to find my sister-in-law and four nieces and nephews sitting in their vehicle, waiting to get into my place, as bats had driven them out! shocking

More "Fortean" news:

-in Trenton, NJ suburbanites fear a panther may be on the loose: Year Of The Cat: Panther on the prowl in NJ?

-Miami, FL has earned, for a second year in a row, the title of "Worst Road Rage City" in the United States: Miami vice: city named road rage capital of U.S. again

-a Pennsylvania woman, inspecting the fence in her backyard, made an unusual discovery: Pennsylvania woman finds dynamite in back yard

Lastly, more strange laws that are, for reasons I'll never understand, still on the books in these states:
Alaska-"It is illegal to provide alcoholic beverages to a moose."
California-"It is illegal to set a moustrap without a hunting license."
Connecticut-"It is illegal to educate a dog."
Florida-"It is illegal for a man to wear any kind of strapless gown."
Illinois-"It is illegal to fish in pajamas."
Indiana-"Monkeys are forbidden from smoking cigarettes."
Kansas(the city of "Lang")-"It is illegal to ride a mule down Main Street in August, unless the animal is wearing a straw hat."
In summary: crazy
