I decided that Freddy Krueger deserved his own topic here. Mr. Green

Anyway I'm a big fan of the series, mostly because of the "Killer in your dream" idea since it makes it different from the other slashers made before it. noddy

The first one is a classic with good special effects (For the budget and year it was made), characters and soundtrack... while the sequels to follow were not as good as the first and lost the horror side (Well ANOES 2 is mainly horror but it was more disappointing the the other sequels IMO, ANOES 3 had the horror/comedy side and New Nightmare was the return of the horror), I still enjoy watching them. winky

Also Freddy Krueger is one of my favorite characters. FreddyK

I get the whole "Robert Englund is the ONLY Freddy Krueger" thing. I do. Still, if you're going to go ahead with a ANOES remake, and this is obviously happening, then you hope for a decent actor in the role and capable writers for the film, which is IMO the case. Jackie Earle Haley will make, IMO a very good "Fred Krueger". As good as Robert Englund's portrayal of this iconic horror movie character? Maybe not but Haley will be good enough.

From the article, this quote from a reader responding to this article(with images):

**** yeah, this might actually be good. Bring it back to the original style of krugger being a brutal killer. Not a comedian
very funny

I agree with this reader: the character should be serious and without the over the top wisecracks.

Yeah, despite the fact that I think nobody can top Englund in the role, I can't think of a better actor to take his place. Not sure about the writers or director, but they chose well with Jackie Earl Haley. I'll miss Englund in the role, but I'm more worried about the lack of Wes Craven in the director's chair. He's a lot harder to replace than Englund.

I saw this poster image as well: http://worstpreviews.com/images/headlines/temp/temp1673.jpg

Though Krueger's face is mostly obscured it's obvious he's grotesquely burned and wouldn't be on anybody's guest list for Sunday brunch. winky

Actor Jackie Earle Haley recently spoke, at Comic.con, about how he is trying to portray "Fred Krueger", the iconic character in the ANOES film franchise made famous by actor Robert Englund. To see his comments click the link: http://www.horror-movies.ca/horror_15993.html

From the article, some specific remarks by Jackie Earle Haley:

Quote:

No, I think it’s definitely a scary process trying to step into the shoes of Robert Englund who has owned this character for decades. He’s done a brilliant job with it. His embodiment, his performance is what makes Freddy who he is
It's good to see Haley giving Robert Englund his due props. thumbz up

Quote:

The challenge now is going back in time and paying homage to this first movie and rebooting it. It was kind of important again to have these qualities that you’re familiar with, the sweater, the hat and the gloves, things we know but also to try to find a freshness and a newness to this re-envisioning
Exactly. winky

I think where Sam and I were coming from with it is darker, more serious, less jokey

Any doubts I may have had about the casting of Jackie Earle Haley to play "Fred Krueger" in the ANOES remake were put to rest after I watched Haley portray "Rorschach" in Watchmen. Rorschach is a character who blends both a rigid sense of right and wrong with a deliberate, almost psychotic manner of going about his business, namely, getting the "bad guys". There was one scene in Watchmen where Rorshach, imprisoned under his real name of Walter Kovacs, made it very clear by his actions towards another hostile inmate that the rest of the inmates were the ones in potential danger being around him...and not the other way around. sickko

Jackie Earle Haley brought a character who wears a mask for the better part of a film to life and did it well. I believe he will put his own unique "spin" on the character of Freddy Krueger, one I hope is well received by fans of the ANOES film franchise. FreddyKK

I didn't really like The Watchmen overall. I had a lot of problems with it. But the one thing I really did like was Jackie Earl Haley as Rorschach. He was by far the best thing about that movie.

A documentary called Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street legacy, began lensing back in August, 2009 in and around Los Angeles, CA and is narrated by Heather Langenkamp, who starred in the1984 original ANOES film and also two other films in this franchise. Here's a link to the A Nightmare On Elm Street remake trailer:

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=63620005

Anyway, there are three things that I don't like:: Freddy looks like an alien rather then someone who was burnt, Freddy's voice isn't deep enough and one scene looks like something from The Exorcist. bleh!

I can say one thing that I really liked about it: The new glove looks great. FreddyK

I liked the trailer. As to your other comments Krueger looked like a severely burned person...nothing more and nothing less. Why do you believe he looks like an alien? heyo

I do agree with you about his voice: it would sound more menacing if it was deeper. FreddyKK

His face just has this alien look to me, I just can't explain it... also, now that I think about it, he looks a little bit like Voldermort from the Harry Potter series IMO. winky

Also I'm not that happy with your "nothing more and nothing less" comment, IMO it's like your saying "I'm right and your wrong". boredd

Perhaps...but I didn't say "I'm right and you're wrong". If you believe a comment of mine is disrespectful to you in any way then my suggestion would be to send me a PM about it or at least ask me to clarify my meaning in the post you didn't like.

Ok, still I don't think Freddy looks like a burnt person like he did in the original's, so lets just agree to disagree. winky

Thanks for the heads up on the trailer, Packmule! I was wondering when we'd be able to see that. I think the film looks good, but Freddy looks kinda weird. I don't know how to explain it, he just seems less scary than before...
'The void is that which stands right in the middle between this and that. The void is all-inclusive, having no opposite — there is nothing which it excludes or opposes. It is living void, because all forms come out of it and whoever realizes the void is filled with life and power and the love of all things' - Bruce Lee

That actually looks pretty good. At least for a re-imagining. But I agree about the voice. Doesn't really sound that good. Jackie Earl Haley might be great in the role. But he won't top Robert Englund.

Like you Johnny I found Krueger's face to be, well not disappointing but definitely different from the classic ANOES series.

Obviously Krueger's post burn face won't look exactly like Robert Englunds' "Freddy Krueger" but something seems missing. confuzed

I found this screen shot from the trailer that shows Freddy Krueger's face at an angle: it's not a head on shot of him but it does reveal much about what he looks like. The producers of the ANOES remake have said they wanted Krueger's "post burn" look to be more extreme. I'm not sure, judging from the below image, that they've accomplished that. I'm inclined to think they haven't. That said I'm still fired up to see this film in a theater. A Nightmare On Elm Street opens in theaters on April 30, 2010.

To see the screen shot click on the spoiler tag below. Note: for anyone NOT wanting to see what Freddy Krueger looks like "post" burn DO NOT click on the below spoiler. winky

I'm still not sure about the face either. I mean the movie itself looks pretty good. But I'm not totally sold on Freddy himself. He doesn't look right and he doesn't sound right. His face doesn't looks odd. Not gnarly enough.

Here's Dread Central's coverage of the new ANOES trailer and some stills posted separately: http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/33738/a-nightmare-elm-street-trailer-hits-see-krueger-our-stills

Anyone clicking the Dread Central link will no doubt notice the generally negative reader comments, the vast majority of reader disdain in reaction to Freddy Krueger's appearance in this remake. Here's a couple of the reader comments, both replete with a fair amount of profanity:

Quote:

****. REMAKES.

Seriously, PD hasn't done justice to the originals by their shitty as hell remakes and they never will.

How can two different studios **** up three classic 80s horror icons? Oh yeah, by hiring MEDIOCRE WRITERS AND DIRECTORS WHO DON'T KNOW ONE BLOODY THING ABOUT THE GENRE!

HATCHET & WRONG TURN 2 are recent examples of slasher films that are fun as hell and are made by people who understand what works.

Whatever. **** Platinum Dunes, **** this shit and **** the people who made the crappy as **** Friday the 13th movie a box office smash.

**** REMAKES! **** 'EM!

(This has been a possessed by the Zomwonder post)

Or this one:

Quote:

utter Shit...i Think Michael

utter Shit...i Think Michael bay made it his goal to trash as many classic films as he could in the span of a couple years and he has succeeded in doing so...This Trailer looks like Shit Freddy looks like shit and his voice is not scary nor right for the role.I hope Michael bay chokes on some 35mm film stock and never recovers...**** you Bay

Hah. Those are some pretty strong reactions. But I can understand. I've felt the same way over many a beloved franchise I've seen destroyed in front of my eyes. I won't make a judgment call on this film yet, though. I just hope it turns out good, for the fans' sakes.
