One of the things I did in life, as I got older, was slow down and take the time to listen, really listen, to types of music that were different from my beloved 60's/70's rock and 80's metal.
I began to appreciate all kinds of music, including R & B, pop, classical and the various incarnations of jazz. It is this latter kind of music that I've found to be a real stress reducer for myself, at times.

Some of the jazz artists I call favorites, since about 1989, when I first started giving this music genre a serious listen:

Al Jarreau (vocalist)
George Benson(vocalist/jazz guitarist)
Earl Klugh(jazz guitarist)
Ronnie Laws(sax)
Najee(sax)
Marion Meadows(sax)
Gerald Albright(sax)
Hiroshima(a blend of modern pop, jazz and traditional Japanese music)
The Manhattan Transfer(vocalists)
Lee Ritenour(jazz guitarist/vocalist)
Boz Scaggs(vocalist)
George Howard(sax)
Paul Hardcastle(keyboardist with guest vocalists)
Rick Braun(trumpet)
Richard Elliot(sax)
Fourplay(a quartet of legendary jazz musicians)
Kirk Whalum(sax)
Michael Franks(guitarist/vocalist)

Starter: I have quite a few CDs from UK keyboardist extraordinaire Paul Hardcastle. I've seen critics characterize much of his work as being "too programmed". Understandable, considering his extensive use of keyboards and other programming machines to produce his often unique sounds(including extensive drum program usage). Still, I've always liked his sound, including these two songs:

Blue Days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKla2nRSnKs&feature=related

Lazy Days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u0YKhE_qh4&feature=related

Some other favorites: from 1992, Just An Illusion by sax great Najee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3No_S92DdLk

From the 1993 album Cache, Love Is A Losing Game by sax man Kirk Whalum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zg634VwTZO8&NR=1

Nice thread. I know we have discussed jazz before but I'm a fan as well in case there are any others reading this.

I enjoy some of the same artists as Packmule but I find myself favoring alot of the 70's era stuff, including the introduction of the synthesizer, which many jazz purists frowned upon. I'm also partial to alot of material from the 60's including much of John Coltrane's work.

One of the groundbreaking keyboards, Josh, was no doubt the Fairlight CMI(Computer Music Instrument), invented in 1978: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairlight_CMI

That's a nice synth. I think I have a soundbank for that on my computer interface synth. I know fanfare for the early synthesizer sound is in the minority, but it's something I've always enjoyed, it wasn't even an acquired taste for me like it was most people.

From 1994: "Can't Stop Now" - Paul Hardcastle:

Josh, this song, "Inner Changes", and by Paul Hardcastle, sounds especially good when you increase the bass setting on your stereo:

My Dad's a jazz fan, but not sure if it's cool jazz or what he prefers. I am sure I've seen Stan Getz CDs, but I'll have to ask him more about his tastes. When he and I are out riding, together, quite often he'll pop in a jazz CD.

One of the first cassette tapes I bought in the jazz music genre was from an album called Rit, a 1981 release by jazz guitarist extraordinaire Lee Ritenour. I remember playing this tape a lot during my sophomore year in college.

Here's a song from that 1981 album called "Mr. Briefcase":

Lee, do you have a turntable?

I ask because recently my girlfriends Father asked us to clean out his storage unit- he didnt want to pay the monthly fee and told us we could keep his record collection which was stored inside. This was no small collection - there are about 12 boxes each containing probably a hundred records or so. I cracked the case on a couple of the boxes and discovered they are full of primarily 70's Jazz and R +B.

I'm probably going to sell some of this on Ebay, but if you are interested and still have a turntable, I can send you some Jazz records free of charge, I would only ask that you paid the shipping. Don't feel obligated at all, but I wanted to put it out there just in case. A few of the artists I found just from opening the two boxes: David Sanborn, Weather Report, Paul Hardcastle, and Grover Washington Jr. Mr. Smiles

Lee, do you have a turntable?
No, I do not. I used my father's turntable and speakers in our basement to listen to my records(I had about 75 at one point). I started using a cassette bookshelf-style compact stereo system in college.

Currently, I play CDs either on my computer or one of my DVD players. I also have a basic "Walkman" style portable CD player.

I appreciate the offer Josh. It sounds like you have quite a collection on your hands. Mr. Smiles
