MINOR SPOILERS I got to see Outlander. Man. I haven't enjoyed a movie that much in a long time. It's just disgusting that this movie isn't getting a wide release. It's really awesome. I mean really goddamn awesome. Right now I'm trying to decide between 9/10 and 10/10. I'd give it 9/10 because, while I really enjoyed it, I know there are a few areas where it could have been a bit better. But I know the director didn't get to do everything he wanted. And since I enjoyed it so much, I think I should give it a 10/10. I don't want anyone rating it higher than me, because nobody is happier to have seen a movie like this than me. I really liked Jim Caviezel in this. He's got such a great, manly, calm, confident, likable presence to him. Spoiler: click to toggle Sophia Myles. Oh my. Where have you been all my life Sophia? ![]() I am in love. :) This woman is incredibly gorgeous. And she slays monsters pretty damn well too. My favorite scene with her is the first time we see her. She's sword fighting with her dad, and she's wearing the most incredible costume. ![]() Oh, she's a babe. I hadn't seen any of Jack Huston until now. I guess he's the grandson of John Huston. He wasn't my favorite actor in the film, but he was good in this. John Hurt was also good, but not the most notable performance in the film. Ron Perlman was great in this movie. But I'm glad they didn't overdo his presence. His role is memorable, but thankfully he doesn't overshadow Caviezel, who I thought had the best performance in the movie. Boromir was a fun side character. I'm glad the movie respected him enough not to make him into a red shirt halfway through the film. The Moorwen is an awesome creature. A couple of effects shots are a bit sketchy, but the Moorwen itself looks really magnificent. Yes, I do love my practical effects. But in this case, there was no way to do a creature like this without just cg-ing it. I was really satisfied with the cg too. There were several scenes with the Moorwen that were just amazing. You'll have to see for yourself. It's hard to believe that this is an independent film. It doesn't look like it at all. This is very well-made film. Mostly great acting. Mostly good writing. Great special effects. Great cinematography and locations. The sound effects are great. The action is great, and often magnificent. I should probably go over my small complaints now. The music was a bit more Zimmer-ish than I might have liked, but it worked really well in the film. I think the score could have been a bit more orchestral, but overall it's not a big complaint. It works and it doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the film. The first half of the movie is amazing. It has a lot of momentum that just drives the movie forward. The second half is still great, but I felt like it started to lose a bit of steam towards the end there. I still think there's a lot of great stuff there. It just didn't feel quite as climactic or epic as it could have. The conclusion is a bit too simple. The build-up to it is excellent. The moral ambiguity and the back story about the slaughter of the Moorwens. That was awesome stuff. I just think the conclusion could have had a bit more impact. The thing is, if I'd just watched the ending I'd be like, "Holy cow, that's awesome." And it is awesome. It just sort of feels a bit flat compared to what has come before. I felt like the movie deserved a bit more than just an action scene ending. Spoiler: click to toggle I was just so ecstatic with enjoyment for the first 2 acts of the film. It was so brilliantly spectacular and engaging. I did like the 3rd act, but I just think it fell a bit short when compared with the first two acts. The Moorwen's lair was a really awesome and horrific place. Volcanic vents. A massive underground lake with light shafting in. Piles and piles of bodies. It's a really intense scene. There's this one scene where the Kainan and Wulfric are trying to rescue Freya and one of their buddies is getting munched on by the Moorwen, and he stays alive for a long time. There were some really great special effects in there. Spoiler: click to toggle The movie is sort of a breathless thrill-ride, but I don't want to give the impression that it lacks character or depth. This is something the movie does really well. The movie has respect for the characters. Especially Kainan. He is given a great character story. He's sort of this angry soldier. Regretful of his past mistakes. He has to find his humanity again. But as they say, the best way to show character depth is through character relationships. Kainan's interactions with the Viking characters The movie isn't quite perfect, but I just enjoyed so much about it that I find it hard not to rate it a 10. So for now I'll rate it both 9/10 and 10/10. Just know that I'm almost never this excited about a new movie anymore. Despite a couple of problems, I loved this movie. I want to buy it on DVD. I wish it would come out in theaters everywhere so everyone would get a chance to see it. It makes me so angry that this isn't getting a wide release. It's just not fair, to the filmmakers and actors especially. They put so much effort into making this film. It's obvious that the director, Howard McCain, is as in love with the idea of the film as I am. Edited by crowmagnumman, Jan 30 2009, 07:56 PM.

I can't make it to Best Buy until this Friday(5-22), after work. Hopefully this title will be in stock. |

I actually ordered it online last night on Amazon and today received an e-mail telling me that their supply has run out and it is now on back order and should arrive between the 2nd. - 14th. ![]() They probably will have copies at some stores of Best Buy. You should go to their websites and do a store search for your area to see where the nearest store that has copies is to do a store pick up. It's really easy. So do I. In any event, I went by the Best Buy a couple of miles from my residence: it was not in stock. Late edit: I ordered this DVD from Amazon.com but the expected ship out dates on this title are, at a posted 8-11 day estimate, more than slightly annoying. |

I received another email from Amazon yesterday afternoon informing me that their original delivery estimate for the "Outlander" DVD, June 6-10, was being changed to June 20-24, that is, they're adding another potential two weeks to the delivery time. Assuming I receive this DVD from Amazon on June 20 that would make the overall delivery time nearly a full month, since I ordered this DVD back on May 22. I'm going to try and find out what the problem is with the delivery of this DVD. If I'm satisfied that Amazon isn't responsible for the delay in shipment of this order I'll order from them again in the future. If, however, I believe Amazon is even partly responsible for the delay, and I'm inclined to think they are right now, then I will never order anything from them online again. ![]() The DVD is in stock and available for immediate ship out at DVD Empire: http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?item_id=1462290 At DeepDiscount.com the DVD is listed as in stock...but only the "full screen" version(the original aspect ratio is cropped).
