My brother saw some of this sci-fi/horror movie on tv a few years ago. I've been trying to figure out what the film was since then. If anyone knows what this movie is called, I'd be really glad to hear it.

I know it's an Asian film. One of the characters is sort of de-evolving, or something. The transformation is pretty slow. It takes several days. Other characters don't know what to do with the creature/man now that he's de-evolving, because he was once their friend. So there's this one scene where the creature/man is in a jail cell with metal bars, and there's a group outside consisting of random people and reporters. There's some main characters that are there. They go in to observe and attempt to communicate with the creature. They have no idea whether he is dangerous or not. One of the main characters tries to talk to the creature/man, but he gets too close. The creature grabs the guy. Later the creature is picking the guy apart and munching on pieces of him while he's still alive.

A group arrives and is horrified by this.

There's also a scene where we see police cars and they look like cheesy miniatures. The cars are driving along the road, and I think it is filmed in high-speed. A siren noise accompanies the scene.

The whole movie feels sort of like a classic Kaiju film.

Also the movie is black-and-white. Somewhat grainy. Perhaps it is an old film. Looks 50s/60s.

I could probably get more details out of my brother if the right questions are asked. Thanks for any help you could provide.

The only Toho horror film that comes to mind, and is shot in black and white, is Half Human(1955), but this film is about a Yeti and not a "man turning into something else" kind of thing. I also thought of The Split(1962)(the international title) a film also known by its American title of The Manster. I'll have to check because I own an Alpha Video cheapie DVD of this film but I'm not sure whether it's in B&W or color. I know that the main character in this film, "Larry", an American reporter, undergoes a transformation into a two headed freak after being injected by a Japanese scientist while the reporter is on assignment in Japan.

Late edit: The Manster is a B&W film. Here's a clip:

Haha, wow. The Manster looks like a crazy movie. I think it's probably not the film my brother is thinking of, but I'll have to show the clip to him to see if it rings a bell. Great clips anyway. I enjoyed watching them.

The Manster is a surprisingly effective horror movie with a decent performance turned in by Peter Dynely. (The late) Jerry Ito also stars in this movie as well.

Parts of your initial post sounds like Frankenstein Vs Baragon(1965), also known by its American title Frankenstein Conquers The World. In this film a boy is discovered running around, feral like, eating local animal life and living on the streets. Scientists take him in and he subsequently, due to radiation, enlarges to about 15 meters(eventually), escapes and battles a quadripedal dinosaur like kaiju called Baragon.

(The AIP trailer)

This film is in color, however.

If it is FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD, and it sounds like it is, the film is now available on DVD in North America from Media Blasters.

Wow, that's cool. I never knew Nick Adams was in Frankenstein vs. Baragon. I'm pretty sure the movie is black-and-white, but maybe there's a b&w version out there that got played on tv.

I remember the scene where the guy was getting eaten was really disturbing to my brother, and it doesn't seem like this movie would have a scene like that. But I haven't seen it yet, so I can't be sure.

I know Frankenstein Conquers The World occasionally airs on AMC. I remember one year(1999 or 2000 I think) when AMC's "Monsterfest" showed a marathon of Toho kaiju films and other giant monsters, FCTW among them. Perhaps your brother saw this film with a poor TV resolution or something. I cannot think of any other dated Asian horror film, from the 50's or 60's, that coincides with your earlier description. huh?

This one must be really cult. If I ever find it I'll definitely post about it here. Probably within the next month I'll watch Frankenstein vs. Baragaon just to be sure, but I'm thinking it's not the one. I appreciate the help, though. The trailer for F vs. B greatly increased my interest in seeing that movie.

As August mentioned, Frankenstein Vs Baragon(1965) is now available on Region 1 DVD, released not too long ago by Mediablasters. I'm fairly certain you won't find it at Best Buy(not sure about other national retailers) so you may have to order it online, when you do decide to get it: http://www.amazon.com/Frankenstein-Conquers-World-Vs-Baragon/dp/B000JU8H7E

I buy most of my DVDs online anyway. It's the best place to find the right version at the right price.

Nope. Not yet, unfortunately. I'd probably be able to narrow it down a lot easier if I was the one that remembered it. But all I've got is my brother's testimony. Maybe I should grill him for information again. Mr. Smiles

After reading this thread from start to finish, I can say I'm curious as well. Whatever it is it sounds cool.

Bits and pieces of the description you gave remind me of the original Swamp Thing movie. I haven't seen it in years but the prison cell thing somehow reminded me of it. I remember a scene where Swamp thing is trapped and I believe they had cut his arm off but he manages to grow it back into a vine or something like that. I also remember getting scared as a child of a guy who drinks some kind of wine and turns into a pig-like creature, if I remember correctly. Man it's been years, I'm going to put the film on my netflix queue now. big grin

Parts of Swamp Thing(1982) were filmed on the outskirts of Charleston, South Carolina.

That scene you're referring to Josh was when "Bruno", played by character actor Nicholas Worth, drank some of the formula and turned into that squat, pig like creature you mentioned, and began hopping around all over the place, cackling.
