I really hope this means an eventual Blu-Ray release of the movies. I think it's about time America had a complete Godzilla collection in HD.

Jim Ballard, a contributing writer for Sci-Fi Japan, has authored an excellent article, with images, of Toho's efforts to restore every Godzilla film to HD(high definition) format. All of these movies recently aired in HD in Japan. To read this article click the link: http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/2008/12/29/putting-godzilla-in-focus/
Nice find Pack, very interesting article to say the least. Looks like a lengthy and difficult process to go through. It's good to see a company take pride in their work though and go the extra mile to make sure the quality remains high.

If the films are released on BLU, I hope the studios other than Classic Media (Here's looking at you, Sony/Columbia) take the time with the new releases to give us a complete package and throw in some special features/commentary or at least both versions of the films on each disc.

Special features would be great, but having both versions is very important. I really hope they wouldn't skimp on that.

Yea, but having both versions means that if we do get a box set, we would have to have 56 discs. Not to mention each film having a separate disc for special features. Because to have perfect pic quality, we need a blu-ray disc that has the film in HD-Blu-Ray format only without interactive menues. Just pop in the disc and watch a subtitled version of the film (I am refering to the discs with the Japanese versions). There! No compression issues, artifacting, or anything. Litteraly perfect!

I think one of the big questions is if there are even any plans to release these Godzilla movies on Blu Ray in Japan?

^There's actualy more interest in America than Japan on this subject... I bet Toho is waiting for Blu-Ray discs to be more Region diverse like regular DVDs so $$$ will flow...

Sci-Fi Japan has posted a link where you can watch many of Sony's Godzilla titles(and the 1961 film Mothra) online, in HD quality no less. Here's the Sci-Fi Japan article, which includes the link to "Crackle", where you can watch these movies online: http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/2009/03/17/godzilla-and-mothra-on-crackle/

This looks awesome, especially considering it's a free service! I'm going to try to look into this on the weekend when I'll have the time to watch one of them.

Awesome, but damn. They're English dubs. I only enjoy seeing some of the older ones I liked as a kid dubbed in English.

I am wondering what the hell they were thinking about doing this service. Really, it is non profitable. What does Toho think?

If by "they" you're referring to Sony and their video service "Sparkle" the streaming videos of these films strikes me as a means of marketing these films. Granted, I doubt these online videos will generate any sizable revenues for Sony but perhaps these video streams of various G films will increase interest in them among those not as familiar with Godzilla.

Whatever the reason Sony must believe there's some merit to it or they wouldn't be doing it. winky
