Why dosn't Toho just buy back all of the American distrubtion rights back and do the Classic Media Treatment with Special Features and both versions of the movies. I mean, They are ALL TOHO Movies. Why don't they step up?

Classic Media does not want to do any more kaiju. That was a once in a klifetime thing for them to do. They want to do kids entertainment, butmcult movies... Like Rankin/Bass X-Mas specials.

Because Toho:

A. Doesn't have a DVD firm own by them here in the US like in Japan
B. The cost of Making the DVDs and the cost of shipping them here would not be paid off to make even a penny of profit because people wouldn't buy them except for the die hards.

Well, when Toho, the people who ultimately have all the rights to all of these movies to do whatever they want to do with them, chooses to set around for Years 12 or 13 years and not bother to give us a choice to buy a Legal copy of Godzilla 1985 Japanese or US version of DVD. The people WILL find a way. It just pisses my off that they choose to do nothing instead of getting the product out on the markets so all the world can enjoy them. there is new generations of kids growing up that have never seen some of these movies. sad

I sympathize with you here, Yuri, absolutely I do. I try to remind myself that Toho is simply a company that is, like other companies, looking to make a profit. By doing that I don't get worked up about it. Obviously that may not work for every serious G fan. winky

There has been, from what I can tell, and over the last ten years(or longer), a lot of grumbling from die hard Godzilla and kaiju movie fans about the time it has taken for so many of these movies we love to come out on quality Region 1 DVDs. In my mind we have had a justifiable reason to complain. That said Toho also has the right to protect its copyrights and copyrighted material, which obviously includes the character "Godzilla".

I have, at every opportunity, purchased official Region 1, Region 2 and Region 3 Godzilla movies released by Toho, Sony or Universe Laser. I believe every Godzilla fan should strive to buy the official releases. The R1 and R3 discs are currently affordable...the Region 2's perhaps not for everyone.

I have also bought "bootleg" (DVD-R) discs of some Toho sci-fi movies: perhaps 10-12, because they were only on Region 2 DVD and at a price I couldn't afford. I felt some regret at buying them...but not guilt. I've got one life to live and only one opportunity to enjoy my hobbies, which include the viewing of these Toho sci-fi/kaiju movies that I am so fond of.

Considering how much I have invested in official Toho produced movies on DVD and other products tied in to Toho I don't think this Japanese motion picture company is going to agonize over my purchase of 10-12 bootleg DVDs that I bought for $8 each. I understand that a lot of people buy bootlegs and that the dollar amount can add up. For that reason, and out of respect for Toho's copyrights, I have prohibited source URLs to online and catalog mail order bootleg vendors from being posted at this message board on the main index pages. I also never encourage anyone to buy a bootleg disc of a Toho kaiju or sci-fi film.

Buying these bootleg discs is a decision each person must make on their own. At this point, and for me, I'm not inclined to buy them anymore and would rather just wait on an official DVD release, or save up the money to buy the Region 2 disc. That's just me. Others may look at this differently and that's okay as well.

But Toho cannot just take back the rights. And the thing is that the general public do not care, so unless limited runs of DVDs are done, no profit is to be seen.

I accquired several bootleg copy of several Godzilla movies. I didn't feel bad about getting them, either. This is pretty much they way it has to be since there is no real "Official" release of many of these movie for the forseeable future. I'm just saying if there was an option, I would have bought the "Official" copy. But most people wouldn't buy them, they are for the "diehard" fans. So, they wouldn't make a profit. It's the never ending circle.

I don't feel bad at all, sorry. With the amount of money I've spent on official merchandise and the word of mouth promotion I've given their franchise, I've basically been doing "street team" style promotion for them without getting paid for it at all. I think they'll be ok.

I am on bootlegging like this:

It is wrong, unless it is of a certaint version of a film which is not legaly out yet. Mostly because if I was ever taken to court for buying a bootleg and fully knowing that the product was a bootleg, I will just state this quote from a bootleg site which shall remain unkown to you:

" In regards to the legality of the Video Home Recording act settled by Congress with the Home Recording Act( P.L 102-563,106 Stat 4237,Codified at 17 U.S.C 1001-1010) in October 1992. heyo

How can it not be wrong for "a film that is not legally out yet"? That's what a bootleg is, Evan: it's a copy of a film, usually burned to DVD-R or CD-R, made either in a theater(off a camcorder) or copied from other source, that has not been officially released to a specific region coded DVD.

very funny

I've got a news alert for you Evan: the chances of you, as an individual, being sued by a major film studio for buying a bootleg DVD of their film is about as great as seeing flying pigs. tongue-1

Thread drift: interesting avatar, Josh. very funny
