you know animes like Bleach, Death Note, Zoids and what not. those types of animes. well if you're having trouble finding an anime you want to watch, I HIGHLY recommend this site.

http://justdubs.net

despite the name of the url, naruto isn't the only dubbed anime on that site, it ranges from many things, from yu yu hakusho to rurouni kenshin to zoids to even Sailor Moon. so if you're having trouble finding an anime, go here.

Thanks for the link, I'll have to check that out later. I don't watch a whole lot of anime but I have enjoyed Vampire Hunter D and Ninja Scroll in the past.

Inferno could probably answer this better than me, but from what I understand "anime" usually refers to a specific style of drawing, and I think the term also usually references work from Japan. But I'm just going off a hunch here. Someone on another forum told me that once.

well Animation is more like Cartoons, you know things such as Tom & Jerry, Foster's home for imaginary friends and what not, but in Anime things tend to get much more violent and there seems to be more profane language. so Anime is much more serious than Animation and in my opinion it is alot more interesting. Anime also always comes from Japan, except for in a few cases, like I know an anime called "Elfen Lied" that comes from Germany originally. but then they Dub it to english.

I've been an anime fan almost my entire life. While i'm not up to date on the current animes of today, I still watch alot of the old school animes from back in my day. I continue to be a huge fan of animes like Yamato/Star Blazers, Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets, Grandizer, Gaiking, Getter Robo G, (I absolutely loved those mechas) Robotech, etc., that I watched as a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's. And I still love (the original Japanese versions of) Dragonball Z. If anyone can make any recommendations on some current, cool animes of today, i'll check them out.

I despise Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z/Dragon Ball GT...I rather watch Sailor Moon than that vomitard

As for new anime series out right now: I've been getting into Bleach and Full Metal Alchemist lately. And I'm a big fan of Naruto (both anime and manga). The various series in the Gundam universe are interesting too. Also an old school anime show I watch on dvds is Teknoman (Tekkaman Blade in Japanese).

Just another reason why I'm a fan ;-)

Macross Frontier!

Any Robotech/Macross fan of old should see this series!

Prelude to everything Macross is Macross Zero!

Those would be a good place for a mecha anime fan to start.

Superhero cartoons beg to differ.

As do comedy anime.

Anime typically refers to animation in the Japanese style of drawing (Including a mix of realistic and unrealistic body proportions that allow for very clear expression of emotions, etc), even though this style is very varied. This is a rather big difference from Western tendency to go for either mostly realistic or entirely unrealistic.

As a long-time anime fan, I think I've been watching it for the past 5-6 years now, maybe more, I think I can contribute a lot to this topic.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com
^A site that lists a lot of animes and a lot of information, plus news regarding old and new animes.

http://www.anidb.net
^A site which contains a lot of information about subtitles anime, specifically regarding fansubs. Broadcasts that have been ripped off a TV signal in Japan and distributed through the internet, and then subtitles by people around the world. These files are then called fansubs.

Now regarding recommending some good anime.

Popular anime: Fullmetal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic!, Naruto, Bleach, Hajime No Ippo, Slam Dunk and Soul Eater.

Use the titles to look for descriptions at anidb (the link I provided)

For a new anime fan I would recommend Hajime No Ippo (it's a boxing anime, but you don't need to do boxing in order to like it, it's got comedy, action, martial arts and drama)

I could also recommend Soul Eater, Full Metal Alchemist and Slam Dunk, though you would need to continue to read the mangas (the source of material) to continue SOME of the stories.

You see, some of the mangas have been totally animated while others were stalled because they weren't making enough money animating it. Some animes have caught up to the source of material, the mangas, and the studio behind the anime are then filling the anime with non-source material, also called fillers which is commonly known in the Naruto and Bleach world, those I mentioned before. So I would, well, warn you that's they're both long series and have fillers, but there's no need to watch them as they're like commercials but do contain stories about the characters in the show.

Naruto, Bleach are still airing. Hajime No Ippo have just finished its second season. But will return soon.

There's many shows that can be watched and it's just as good as watching a movie, better in most cases, imho. Though as you can see it takes some time to become familiar with all the sites, expressions and ways to download. There's XDCC bots that can be accessed by using a program called mIRC, there's regular downloading, also called DDL (Direct Download) and then there's torrents.

It's also possible to stream anime, but even though it's easier, don't. It'll ruin the entire enjoyment if you stream instead of downloading a >350MB episode. I can do that in 5 minutes or so. Watch the show how it's supposed to be seen, Japanese Audio and Original Quality.

Animes are sometimes licensed by an American company, mostly Viz Media, Funimation or other companies who then have permission to distribute a certain show in their name through DVDs or TV broadcasts, and in most cases they also contain a dubbed version of the show. I'm talking about an English audio track by American Voice Actors. Myself I'm totally for subbed versions, meaning subtitled anime which has original audio track, japanese, and english subtitles. Because I feel the spark about animes goes away, the thing I love about it, it becomes every other american cartoon which kills the show. Also, it's pretty funny to hear japanese voices, and it'll grow on you so you eventually start to say:

"Baka" - "Idiot"
^Japanese^English"

Also, most people, like myself, feel that the English Voice Actors don't even like voice acting, I mean, there's so much feeling in Japanese voice actors, while English ones just seem to monotone, so dead, stupid and out of place.

So I hope I've kept you going until this point. I can add some more anime sites where it's possible to download some animes. Good luck and you won't regret it if you watch a couple of episodes of Soul Eater or Hajime No Ippo. There's also anime movies which are just as long as regular movies. Try "Grave of the Fireflies", "Akira" or "Ghost in The Shell" if you're interested. They're only movies and won't take forever to finish if you don't like what you see.

P.S. When an anime gets licensed it's common that the anime gets taken down from various sites by their admins in order to respect the company who licensed the anime, but also to prevent the companies to send "Cease and Desist" letters to websites and fansubbers who offer fansubs of the specific anime.

@Lone Wolf and Cub: Macross is a fine anime, though it might be too big for a new beginner. Both Macross and Gundam are mecha anime, which means robot animes, but there are many titles to watch if you're planning to begin with that series, that's why I stay away from them at the moment. They're just too damn big.

P.S.S. Don't believe those people who just say "Oh, that ****ing cartoon porn? Oh, you're just so ****ing disgusting... Ew, are you really watching that shit?" I've heard more than enough people who say that, and I'm still watching anime. It's true that there's something called hentai which is animated porn. One would think it's more disgusting watch real people do it than cartoon characters. Guess not. But anime and hentai are like heaven and earth. They're totally different from each other. Only ignorant pricks who haven't even seen anime before, and feel like bullying someone would say that.
