Do you prefer the Original 1951 film or the remake of "The Thing"?
I like both equally. That might be because both are, despite being based on the same short story, very different. The original has obviously more basic effects and is, IMO, a bit campier but the cast, especially actor Kenneth Tobey, carry this film along very well. The make up effects for James Arness, who played "The Thing", were decent for the time during which this film was made. I also liked the fact the monster in the original was not fully seen until much later, which added a great deal of suspense to the movie.

I also like John Carpenter's remake: the cast in this movie is very good, the interaction between the members of the research station tense, even humorous at times, based on these guy's various personalities and quirks.

Both films do a good job of establishing the isolation of these people, stuck at the south pole, thousands of miles from civilization of any kind, which only complicates things after they discover "The Thing".

I liked how you put alot of detail into you opinion on both films. bravo clap

My ratings for both "The Thing" Original and Remake:

1951 Original - 9/10.

1982 Remake - 8/10.

As you can see, the 1951 Original only wins be a one.

Matthew, take a look at this brief intro by John Carpenter about The Thing(1982), which I thought was interesting:

From this clip it's clearly evident John Carpenter is disappointed that the 1982 film was not a box office success. He also talks about some of the difficulties encountered during the shooting of the film.

While I respect your sentiment I wouldn't feel sorry for John Carpenter. Like any veteran movie director understands, these movies are going to be criticized no matter what, since criticizing movies, or anything for that matter, is among the easiest things a person can do.

I do feel better knowing that history has been kind(er) to the 1982 film, the movie itself having developed quite a following among various fans of horror and sci-fi films.

John Carpenter has had, IMO, a great career as a movie director and hopefully we'll see more movies helmed by this guy in the future as well.

Awesome avatar packmule. The Thing is also my favorite JC film. I've never seen the Howard Hawkes original, but I'd probably like it too.

Well, nice vid and sig... Surprised the thread has gone on this long.

But my opinion of John Carpenter's best is, first I will list the films I will list the ones I have seen UNCUT-

Assult On Precinct 13
Halloween
The Fog
Escape From New York
The Thing
Christine
Starman
Big Trouble in Little China
Prince of Darkness
They Live
In The Mouth of Maddness
Ghost of Mars
Vampires

I have seen more than 3/4 of this best of director's filmography. And his best i my mind always bounces back and fourth. Mostly between Halloween, Escape from NY, They Live, Big Trouble, and Prince of Darkness. And my fave is:

Prince of Darkness
This film is carpenter at his best. This is him directing, doing the script, doing the score, and last but not least make the DaVinci Code look like baby dribble in comparison. He took his best "dialog" actors from his films and took the regular debate of science vs. religeon and took it lightyears beyond. The direction is scarry as crap, the music is scarrier, the photograph is beautiful for this material, the SFX are the best you will need for this film, the acting is great most of the time and I felt that Victor and/or Donald deserved an Academy nomination, and I can assure you, this is the scarriest film ever made. It fallows the formula Carpenter established with Halloween and the Fog while adding in the Exorcist and saying "This is out of God's hands". People think books like "Holy Grail, Holy Blood" and "The DaVinci Code" are good Christianity doubt-stories. Prince of Darkness s beter, especialy with backup from both Christianity and Science backing up "Prince". Now some will say that the DaVinci Code is better because of the presence of some facts about the painting. But we shall never know because we cannot experament with the Last Super Painting because of age and the many restorations that have been preformed on it. So saying there is a conspiracy about the painting is just as bad as saying that somewhere there is a vat of green liquid that is satan which is acompanied by a re-writing of the book of revelations. POD is for that and alot more his best film and my favorite. Saddly, he does not like talking about this film much.

The only film that is close to a tie is Big Trouble now that I thin about it...

This is Monsterland Forums, G2K, not Gojira's Sanctuary where John, Max and Heartwork's stale retreads for post topics stall out after two or three replies. winky

Sorry for sounding mean but it is how I feel about the matter.

Topic: one thing I especially liked about They Live(1988) was the head banging alley fight between Roddy Piper and Keith David:

That scene is so legendary. South Park did rip it off in Cripple Fight.

I like Rob Zombie's "re-imagining" of the original "Halloween" but I thought Zombie erred in having the young Michael Myers speak, something we didn't see in John Carpenter's version which, incidentally, I still prefer greatly.

Remakes:

Assult on Precinct 13 - it was original enough to stand on it's own terms. I liked it. Carpenter Liked it. Case closed

The Fog - crap. Brought up some stuff that could have been built on for originality but had alot of inapropriet things (sex anyone? NO!)

Halloween- liked it. Don't wtch it much now because of disgust...
