^It is not a good movie criticaly, but it was entertaining. Especialy when there is a not-so-obvious connection between drugs and ghosts.

Never seen Ghost of Mars, since the reviews are pretty negative for it. It still looks like a fun movie at least
Ghosts Of Mars(2001) is not, IMO, one of John Carpenter's better films. I like it okay but several things merit the negative ratings you mentioned, Crow:

-the acting overall: it's fairly predictable and average. A pre "The Transporter" Jason Statham stars, as well as Natasha Henstridge, Wanda DeJesus and Ice Cube. With no disrespect to these folks or the other character actors in this movie, none will ever win an Oscar for acting.

-the movie sets, which while I wouldn't categorize as "cheap" also looked very conservative and uninspired

-the story line: using ancient and hostile Martian spirits to take physical possession of a Martian mining colony is, to me, a little far fetched. I would have preferred a straight up monster storyline of some kind.

^My advice:

If you really want to see a John Carpenter film, watch Vampyres. It is one of his bette works with James Woods.

^You would like it, it is not a horror film and it is the closest thing to a western John Carpenter did.

Carpenter seems to like westerns. He incorporates a lot of western style into his movies. I think it comes from his admiration for Howard Hawks. I'm a pretty big western fan myself, so I might like it.

Here is something i currently wrote at www.johncarpenterforum.com:

As everyone on the planet earth is aware, America is in dept by the literal trillions and is slowly taking other country's economies with it. So here is an interesting thing, what if the aliens of They Live(1988) intervened now?

1. How would they take care of things
2. Would they be with McCain or Obama on the issue
3. If they have a different plan, would is resemble McCain's plan or Obama's plan the most?

1. By establishing a totalitarian state across the globe, humans nothing more than mindless cattle or brainwashed simpletons, going through the motions of our daily existence.

2. They would side with neither. Instead, these aliens would abolish all currently existing currencies and replace them all with paper money from the board game Monopoly.

3. Their plan would resemble neither John McCain's or Barack Osama's, er Obama's plan: it would entail aerial machines that hover over all the major cities of the world, with an endlessly repeating audio message blaring through huge speakers: Give us your money. Give us your money. Give us your money. Give us your money. Give us your money. Give, uh well, you get the idea. topper

^In the movie, it was sleep.

I think that they would go with taking over with Killing:

Bill Gates
Martha Stuart
Donald Trump

and all relatives to the three who could be acceptable to have the money. With a crap load of cash just floating in the air, we pay off the depts and the aliens take over like in they live...

And Ronald McDonald. The death of this popular fast food icon would be devastating to children, and fast food addicts, all over the world.

Just saw for the first time ESCAPE FROM LA! This is my review from
www.johncarpenterforum.com

Beginning credits got me pumped for the 2 hour ride, hearing the escape from new york theme - only modernized with a new helper helping John Carpenter with the score. Now, I have been told the film was a remake, but I am glad that the truth is Escape from LA is a sequel shot in the form of a quasi remake. Thank goodness for the constant mentions of new york. Kurt Russell, while fifteen years older is really kick ass in this film. I was entertained throughout the entire film. Bruce Campbell's appearance was nice, along with some other faces like Peter Fonda. For the time, I will lean on the CGI. But next I want to talk about the score. Totally different from 80's carpenter, having a similar feel to In The Mouth of Madness. But I am happy that Rob Zombie could contribute. The ending is really cool. No one wins, except snake. He always finds a way to screw humanity over one way or another. It was just a really cool film. And I would say that by a hair it is better than Escape from New York, due to more action and better direction and suspense. Easily one of Carpenter's best. He changed his style a little bit, but in trade of Alan Howarth we got Deborah Hill. Overall, this film gets a 9/10 in my book. Beating Prince of Darkness to second place and LA to first. Just really cool. But terrifying. Those kids being sent to LA, brought up thoughts like "OMG, they are given the choice to confess and electrocute themselves to death" and "LA Jail bait"

Glad you enjoyed it, but I've got to disagree on the film. I like the first one a lot, but the second one felt like a spoof of the first one. I guess it may be good for what it is, but I prefer the first one.

I must admit one thing, though. The ending was awesome.
