I am sorry. Many people call the film a masterpiece when actually it is not. Many things that it's claim to masterpiecedom is done with almost every anime now, not to mention that the film is not "deep". The film is just a cramming of 6 manga volumes with the later 3 volumes suffering from the crunching. And America seems to like this film alot more judging on the DVD releases of Japan and America...

I definitely wouldn't call it a masterpiece but it's definitely solid. Honestly I it wasn't this film that got me into anime (Teknoman/Tekkaman Blade really got me into anime). But with that said...I'll gladly take this over Dragon Ball/Z/GT any day!

Yea that's not bad either, I've only seen a few episodes on Cartoon Network though.

Well I have to say, I found this film quite dissappointing. Yes it was well made and all that, but the story is quite confusing (and to be honest not that good), plus some of the violence is unjustified - like the main female character, she just gets crushed horribly at the end of the film!
Akira is not bad, but its not that good either. If you're looking for a film that's closer to a masterpiece you should watch "Ghost In The Shell" or "Spirited Away".
'The void is that which stands right in the middle between this and that. The void is all-inclusive, having no opposite — there is nothing which it excludes or opposes. It is living void, because all forms come out of it and whoever realizes the void is filled with life and power and the love of all things' - Bruce Lee

I do have to agree with you about Ghost in the Shell, I've only see it once but it was definitely a great piece of work from what I remember. I've only seen parts of Spirited Away but it did look appealing to say the least.

I found Steamboy to be far superior to Akira.

Akira's storyline is just far too muddled to make it an enjoyable film through multiple viewings.I still put it on from time to time, just so I can see that sweet red motorcycle. busy bee
I do not dislike this film,it just becomes very tedious when a friend comes by and says.
"Ooooh!Akira!Can we watch this?"

Akira has it's points, but to call it ground breaking anime is a stretch.
There are far better anime movies that came out far before this, and after.
Steamboy was a birthday gift from my brother, and it blows Akira out of the water!(plus it's an anime I can enjoy with the Cub)

The thing is that it holds my attention - but it makes you think alittle too much. Plus, there is a major common sence paradox - a woman character was talking about simple organisms and the possibility of them returning to power over everything. What the hell does that have to do with a kid with an inferiority complex causing armageddon using his telekinetic powers? Well, wekipedia did mention that alot of stuff in the mangas were taken out...
