Indeed, nor did it help wash the considerable stink off the Godzilla franchise with the previous years Godzilla(1998), this film's rejection by fans as a Godzilla film reportedly playing a role in Toho expediting the return of "their" Godzilla back to the big screen in Godzilla 2000(1999). At this point I would be willing to wait an extra year or two(or three) if it meant Toho would produce a really great Godzilla film.

I would have to agree on this. Toho is so big on their schedule; every film HAS to be made in a year. They know it's not the best way to go about it, but their schedule stands thus. It's quite frustrating, as fans, to look at the ones in control of our franchise in such a negative light.

I hope Toho breaks from tradition one of these days, in making, or perhaps "remaking" Godzilla. For the record, here's what I'd especially like to see from Toho(and Kadokawa, which owns the rights to a certain giant fire breathing turtle):

1. Godzilla Vs Gamera-it'll probably never happen, but, like I always say, one can always hope. The two monsters battle each other(to a draw) to satisfy all kaiju fan's curiosity, then forge an uneasy alliance to take on some type of "super" monster(or monsters). This film could be marvelous, with the right director(e.g Shusuke Kaneko) and effects man.

Remakes:

1. King Kong Vs Godzilla-despite many on the internet calling the idea of a remake of this movie ludicrous I still believe it could work. Obviously the Kong suit would need to be much better than the one used in the 1962 film. That said allow Kong to retain his ability to gain strength from electricity, and keep both monsters in the 50 meter tall range. Unlike the '62 movie, include lots of city destruction scenes.

2. War Of The Gargantuas-two 30 meter tall hairy humanoid behemoths battle it out in Tokyo. To me a remake of the 1966 movie, with upgraded effects, and perhaps a really sinister looking Gaira, would be great. Russ Tamblyn, who ineffectually played Dr. Paul Stewart in the original movie, could have a cameo in the remake, playing a building janitor in the military HQ facility, a role more suited to his acting talents. tongue-1

3. Frankenstein Conquers The World-I still think a remake of the 1965 film has the potential to be good. With today's makeup effects the Franken boy giant could be made even more ugly looking, which is saying a lot.

You wouldn't have to. After getting paid handsome royalties for this film I would give you and your roommate free movie passes, along with hotel accomodations, to see it. tongue-1

I think a Solo film of Godzilla will work, here's how I rate each eras starter:

Gojira/Godzilla (1954): 10/10

The return of Godzilla: 8/10

Godzilla 2000: 7/10.

while I like G2000 it wasnt as good as the solo Idea, so yeah just Godzilla vs the military.

I'm not sure what issue it was, but Godzilla squared off against a trio of kaiju called the "War Monsters"-these monsters were all space monsters, and "trained" to fight, much like soldiers, or like fighting canines in illegal dogfights. I always thought this comic's storyline was very cool.

I believe you are referring to Marvel Comics' Godzilla, who fought the Mega Monsters in issues 12 and 13 of his series.

I voted the new monster without aliens option. However, upon thinking, the Godzilla/Gamera or Godzilla/Ultraman ideas seem very attractive to me.

As does Godzilla/Yongary...

And I believe you're right since my recollection about these things is often shaky. tongue-1

I voted for the Godzilla vs. new monster without aliens choice. Im a bit tired of seeing the same kaiju fight Godzilla and the alien plots have been done to death.

I think, Rodan70, in light of the box office disaster of GFW, Toho will in all likelihood steer away from a G film involving aliens. My guess here is, and it's obviously only conjecture on my part, that the next G film made by Toho will take a "back to basics" approach, with either Godzilla in a solo film, possibly a "re-imagining" of Gojira(1954), or a G film in which Godzilla fights a new monster we haven't seen before.

Hell, they could even base the movie in the 1950's and explore everything that happened in the orignal appereance, viewing it from other people's eyes. But have them cross paths with the orignal characters and stuff. I really like the Idea of having "Chuju" from "Mothra" in Godzilla: Tokyo SOS. Something like that, but more indepth.

I like that idea. thumbs up

Another aspect of the debate, and speculation, regarding the next Godzilla film: how to render Godzilla. All CGI effects? All suitmation? Or a combination of both?

My take: I'd like to see the "combo" approach. I wouldn't object to an all CGI Godzilla, if the CGI was stellar.

Opinions on this, gentleman? heyo

I personally would want all suitmation because that's I grew to love Godzilla that way and to be honest was never that fond of how much it was used in the Millennium Series....and for the most part as a special effect I've never liked CGI for the most part....though there are some things it does do well.

They did King Kong pretty well in CGI and I was kinda thinking about how Godzilla could be done the whole time I watched that film. King Kong was rendered very well in my opinion, and with the exception of one scene where he picked up Naomi Watts in his hand, it was hard to tell he wasn't right there with the actors. Other movies like Dragon Wars did decent monster CGI as well so I'm hoping if they do choose to go that route, they uphold the standard of quality we've seen already and don't take a cheap route.
