Quite recently, in fact today, the 8th grade (that is including me) saw a movie, The Day After Tommarow. Why? Because the teachers claim it has scientific value. Out of this, all Thursday, I tried by best to pursuade them into showing them another film: the Japanese Gojira. I made a Good speach comparing the two films, including quotes from the Kalat text. Saddly, they said if they only had time to see the film, they would surley over any circumstances choose it over "The Day After Tommarow". But plans are being made on later on the year to show the film, some time in February, most probrably the 27th.

My question to you: What is your opinion of having 8th graders watch Gojira and do an 1 hour 40 minute debate on the flm and it's 3 esential confics amoung students and teachers?

Respectfully, my opinion is that these 8th graders would be better off studying grammar, syntax, world history, or any other basic core elements of an 8th grade curriculum.
I realize this answer may not be to your liking, G2K, but I believe education should be confined to the basics: math, science, social studies, English and writing, PE(Physical Education) and perhaps with a dash of current events thrown in as well. The fundamentals, G2K. That's what's important. winky

"taing intrest" = "taking interest"? I'm just guessing here. winky

Yes...
And that is certainly the prerogative of your school principals.

When it comes to education, G2K, I am, like most other aspects of life, a hard ass who believes in sticking to the fundamentals. To me allowing students in a middle school to watch a science fiction film about a 165 foot tall monster blasting Tokyo, Japan to bits is just a 90 minute break from schoolwork in disguise.

Gojira(1954) no doubt may be different things to different people, G2K. What is this film to me? It's a science fiction film that sets the standard for all future giant monster movies, IMO, and is a marvelous beginning to what will become one of the most recognized movie monsters on Earth: Godzilla. This film is a great showcase for the talents of men like Tomuyuki Tanaka, Eiji Tsuburaya and Inoshiro Honda.

Obviously many people have "read" into this movie it's allegories regarding the atomic bomb and all this weapon's implied ethical(and unethical) meanings.

Not me. I make no such inferences from films, simply watching, and absorbing(for lack of better word) these movies as entertainment. Against a back drop of my own life that has been filled with mostly stress, conflict, periodic misery, fatigue and constant disdain for many things(and people) in life, entertainment through movies has been one of the few things in life that makes feel a little good inside.

That's how I look at kaiju films, G2K: entertainment.

I like Gojira a lot, but it's certainly not scientific. That notion that nuclear radiation could mutate a creature to gigantic proportions, or do anything besides irradiate and destroy tissue, has long been debunked.

But then again, The Day After Tomorrow is much worse. And it's not even a good movie. I can forgive unscientific movies if they are good. I hope your teachers are not serious about TDAT being scientifically-accurate to any degree.

So do I. In TDAT a new ice age formed in a matter of days, which is a stretch even for someone like me. winky
