http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/warner-b...-ray-exclusive/

With Warner announcing Blu-Ray exclusivity, it really makes you wonder how much this will tilt the Hi-def format war. The only studios HD-DVD has left are Universal and Viacom (Paramount, Dreamworks) and only Viacom signed a contract which means Universal isnt obligated to only that format.

Personally, I cant see Toshiba's format making it long without Warner, even if Universal does stick with them exclusively. There just wont be enough new releases. Unless Toshiba has another trick up their sleeve of some sort, Im going to go ahead and guess it is near the end for HD-DVD. It might make it another year or so, but once the educated consumer realizes the lack of studio support, they aren't going to buy the players anymore, even if they are cheaper than BD players.

Overall though, I think regular DVD will still outsell either of these new formats for quite some time. Just my thoughts on the matter.

I believe this "war" may reach a far more swift conclusion now, with this news.

Agreed.

Agreed. I wonder how long the HD-DVD format will hang around, and how much longer HD-DVD players will sell in retailers like Best Buy. confused

That, Josh, may already be happening. I bought a Blu-Ray DVD player for $299.99, on sale, despite the option of buying a Toshiba HD-DVD player for $249.99, a full $50 less. The reason I paid more: the Best Buy sales associate, and a Magnavox product representative, both told me they believed Blu-Ray would be the prevailing format, and would be within eighteen months to two years. I saw several other potential customers, considering a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player purchase, talking with the Magnavox rep, who told them the same thing he told me.

Agreed. At $25-35 a pop I cannot buy as many Blu-Ray discs. I will continue to buy regular DVDs and 'sprinkle" in Blu-Ray buys when it's a movie I really want or something I already have, really like, and want to upgrade.

Owning a Playstation 3 made me a blu-ray supporter even though I didnt buy it for blu-ray. I bought it for games but then figured I may as well check out the movies. Im glad now though, that blu-ray looks to prevail because now I wont have reservation or doubts when I think about purchasing a blu-ray disc.

Im glad those reps steered you towards blu-ray despite the hd-dvd player being cheaper, Lee. It would have sucked right now for you to find out this news after recently buying into the Toshiba format.

I was reading somewhere that Warner had about a 20% share of the home video market and their sister company, New Line had a pretty good share as well. Im glad we will still be able to buy their Hi-def movies.

It didn't surprise me at all that they would take a "defiant" stance but dropping that major press conference showed some worry on their side. Microsoft may have some sort of a plan, but at this point, I think they will probably focus more on digitally downloaded movies as opposed to HD-DVD. But it wouldnt surprise me if we begin hearing reports of Toshiba's camp trying to bribe another of the studios to their side with the promise of wads of cash. Im wondering how much Sony paid off Warner for their exclusivity.

Indeed. It's probably a lot. Part of that article, Josh, made a reference to moving ahead with plans to work to develop technology that would render DVDs obsolete. Did you happen to catch that part? heyo

I think they may have been referring to one of those other kinds of discs that we talked about in the other thread, Lee, that are capable of storing much more data. Or they could have been just refferring to an entirely new technology like a flash card or digital downloads as we also discussed.

Browsing the pages of engadget and joystiq.com, I noticed a few other news bits regarding this format war:

- Microsoft says it isn't entirely against the blu-ray technology, and would embrace it if consumer demand were high enough. However for now they said they still back HD-DVD.

- Paramount took a somewhat neutral stance as well, issuing a statement saying that while they are backing HD-DVD still, they are not closing themselves off to the possibility of blu-ray.

- Michael Bay, the director of Transformers, continues to speak publicly on his dissatisfaction for his film not being available on Blu-ray. He has stated he believes it's a better format, and wants to see release on blu-ray.

Regarding this news, I think Paramount is really backpedalling here. They just were supposedly paid over 150 million by the HD-DVD camp and now they seem a bit uneasy to stick only with HD-DVD. I've heard rumors that there was a "back out" clause in their contract with Toshiba, we will see what happens.

While in Best Buy this afternoon after work I looked through the selection of titles in both the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sections: I have to admit I liked the HD-DVD selection somewhat more. freak out

I can agree, somewhat. There are a few Universal movies I would like to have as far as Hi-def but Im not so worried about Paramount.

Zombie film wise, I would have upgraded my Dawn Of The Dead (2004) to hi-def but universal owns the rights to that. I also would like King Kong, but that's Universal as well. That being said, there are alot of films I'm interested in that will only be blu-ray, like Disney's Narnia series, Fox's 28 weeks/days series, Aliens vs. Predator series, and now that WB is blu-ray only they arent going to make the newer Harry Potter's on HD-DVD. On top of that I want to pick up "I Am Legend" when it comes out and that being a Warner film it will only be Blu-ray as well.

Josh, after reading this article about HD-DVD I am really glad I invested in a Blu-Ray DVD player back in December of 2007. The article link: http://tech.msn.com/news/articlecnet.aspx?...72887&GT1=10938

Well, it's official. Toshiba is throwing in the towel, so to speak, in making HD-DVD players. Looks Like Blu-Ray will be victorious. The article link: http://www.reuters.com/article/companyNews...627196120080216

This news is a relief for many consumers I believe, who were holding out waiting to see which format would prevail. Personally I'm happy the one I invested in survived the format war. Now let's see some of those Universal films on Blu-ray, please. Mr. or Ms. Cool

At Best Buy the other day, I overheard a clerk trying to discourage someone from buying an HD-DVD player. The guy wanted it mainly because it was cheaper, but the employee warned him, "We are phasing those out soon...Before too long you won't be able to buy the players or discs here."

On another note, thinking about the Universal catalog, I'd like to pickup, when available, Peter Jackson's King Kong, Land Of The Dead, and Van Helsing, when available, on Blu-ray disc.

I'm sure there'll be lots of Universal titles on Blu-Ray I want to buy. I like the fact Universal is going to switch to Blu Ray, Josh, but I also know it could be armageddon for my debit card unless I use moderation when these titles start coming out.

I'd like to get Van Helsing(2004) as well, in addition to The Thing(1982) and Dante's Peak(1997).
