While I expected, and am pleased, by this move I believe, Josh, that we'll be playing the "waiting game" for a lot of titles that you and I, both Blu-Ray DVD buyers, want.

True. I doubt we will begin to see the library titles on BD until the new releases sell well enough to convince Universal and Paramount to start releasing the older films. Companies like Fox are just starting to get into the full swing of re-releasing alot of their older titles to blu-ray. |

Good article, and definetly written from the heart. Although the article writer has an honest but biased perspective, he made sure to blast the Blu-ray format in some aspects that the HD-DVD was also guilty of, such as the whole backroom pay-off thing. I'm sure Sony and the blu-ray association paid truckloads for Warner's exclusivity but it's obvious the HD-DVD camp did the same with Universal and Paramount. |

First appearing on the market in June 2006, Blu-Ray discs and players are the "next gen" way to watch films, supporting hi-definition playback up to 1080p. The blu-ray disc player uses a violet laser operating at a wavelength of 405 nanometers compared to DVD's red laser which reads at 650 nm, and the shorter length on the Blu-Ray laser helps it to focus on a smaller spot, thus allowing more data to be read in a smaller amount of space. Blu-Ray discs themselves hold 50 GB of data, approximately 6 times that of a dual-layer DVD, and contain a hard coat polymer scratch protection coating to compensate for the fact that data on a Blu-Ray disc is closer to the surface of the disc. In recent weeks, the Blu-Ray Disc association's technology, backed heavily by Sony corp. won a format battle with rival HD-DVD backer Toshiba. After Warner Bros. film studio announced it's intent to produce films exclusively for Blu-Ray, Toshiba soon announced it would no longer be producing HD-DVD hardware, and since that announcement, all major Hollywood film studios have announced intent to support the Blu-Ray format, endig consumer indecision in the marketplace on a definite format of high definition disc. Here are some helpful links to more info on Blu-Ray technology and culture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray http://www.blu-ray.com/ In this Blu-Ray discussion thread feel free to discuss the Blu-Ray technology, industry, films, hardware, new releases, news or just about anything Blu. |

An excellent subject for a topic thread, Josh. thumbs up Here's CNET's review(both CNET editor and random users) for the Blu-Ray DVD player I bought back in December, 2007, a Samsung model BD P1400: http://reviews.cnet.com/video-players-and-...7-32514521.html I bought this unit, on sale, at Best Buy for $299.99 plus tax. The unit has retailed as high as $500 but can now generally be purchased online for around $300 or between $350-$400(regular price) at retailers like Best buy and Circuit City. What brand/model Blu-Ray DVD player do you have, Josh? I'll likely use part of my Christmas bonus at the end of 2008 to buy another Blu-Ray DVD player, probably another Samsung model. ;) |

Do you own a Blu-Ray DVD player, Russ? I also wonder if, in light of the inevitable demise of HD-DVD format, if their will be any kind of buying frenzy for HD-DVD DVD players. Like Blu-Ray players these units do make standard DVDs look a little better.

Indeed I do. A PS3 in fact. Getting one was more than a must as soon as I learned that it was also gonna double as a Blu Ray player. |

Looks like the negatives outweigh the positives on this BR player you have Pack. Which is why I guess you're getting another one at the end of this year? See, I think Sony hit a home run when they made the PS3 to also double as a Blue Ray player. Their firmware will always be able to be upgraded via internet, games, or movies, and you get a top gaming machine and a BR movie player for as little as $300 - $450. They pretty much also looked at the future as well as the present. And the future looks like it's Blu. ;) |

Actually, when I think about it, there's a few movies that i'd like on Blue Ray, but the titles that i'd like to see released the most (along with Transformers) are the Star Wars movies. Especially Episodes 4-6. Anyone heard anything about if those movies are gonna see a BR release in the future? I'd even love to see Godzilla go BR-HD. But I suspect that the closest Godzilla will get to hi-def is on HD-TV channels. Thank goodness for Monsters HD channel. |

Lee, I own only the PS3 as a blu-ray player, but like Russ said, it's a great one to own. Since the PS3 can be hooked up to the internet through LAN or built in wifi, any updates to the blu-ray technology will instantly be integrated into the system. At the end of 2008 Lee, you might want to consider getting a PS3 as your Blu-Ray player. The price might be down from $399 by then, and even if you don't want to play games with the system, you can watch blu-ray discs, download free movie trailers in hi-def from the playstation store and use the usb inputs on the system to view photos or content you downloaded from the web. And I'm also thinking by the end of this year, Sony will have integrated a downloadable movie feature into the system. Russ, I believe there are plans to release Godzilla (1998) on blu-ray though I havent heard any news or a release date recently. However, now that the format war is over, Sony released a statement saying they were planning on releasing alot more of their back catalog titles to blu-ray. If this is true, we should have at least a chance of seeing some of the Godzilla films on Blu that Sony owns the rights to. Here's the link to that article: http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Ind...s_For_2008/1530 |
