For centuries sailors and others who have traversed the world's oceans have spoken of enormous sea waves, that seemingly come out of nowhere, some as tall as a ten story building. For the longest time scientists dismissed these claims as nothing more than hysteria. No more. With technology and advancements like satellite imaging, underwater sensors and other information gathering devices scientists now accept that "rogue" waves, enormous and powerful sea waves, can and do occur, and with a fair degree of regularity. Many ship disappearances are blamed on these rogue waves, which can demolish and capsize ships in a matter of minutes. In 2005 Hurricane Ivan, according to underwater sensors, generated some huge sea waves, even by hurricane standards, in the Gulf Of Mexico, including one 91 foot tall leviathan. ![]() In the film The Perfect Storm(2000) the crew of the sword boat "Andrea Gail" encounter a 100 foot tall rogue wave which sinks the vessel with all hands. Every now and then I'm going to revisit the "Bigfoot" phenomenon in this topic thread. While there are a lot of alleged videos of the mysterious creature on the internet there aren't very many that feature the alleged sounds made by the animal itself, presuming of course that it exists. What would a Sasquatch sound like? Check out this clip, which includes what are purported to be actual recordings of the creature's sounds: I'd like to review this again as well, a September, 2007 video shot by a Pennsylvania deer hunter's tree mounted camera. Note that a black bear cub is photographed, as well as another animal, it's image debated for weeks as being a possible "adolescent" Sasquatch. Officials with the state of Pennsylvania's Department Of Game And Fisheries declared the animal to be a bear ravaged by mange. Judge for yourself by looking at this again: I know one thing: that other animal sure as hell doesn't look like a bear cub. ![]() |

Absolute zero. Heard this term before? It's commonly associated with the science of "Ultracold Physics", in which scientists create conditions, in a controlled setting, in which temperatures are so cold that molecular activity comes close to stopping altogether. As if we humans need another reason to be thankful that prehistoric creatures from long ago no longer exist today...well, here is another one: fossils recently unearthed in Colombia(South America) have revealed the existence of what is easily the largest snake that ever lived. The mammoth snake, dubbed "Titanoboa" by scientists, and which lived in Colombian rain forests some 58-60 million years ago, was 42-45 feet long and weighed around 2500 lbs. It preyed on large reptiles(including crocodiles) and other surrounding vertebrates. This snake's length exceeds that of a city bus. The enormous snake would have lived in water most of the time(the water aiding in its movements) but would have also been able to slither about on land. To see an artist's rendering of this giant serpent click the link: http://news.aol.com/article/ancient-snake-was-longer-than-a-bus/329070

Good god. Is that photo considered authentic? What website did you find this pic at, Crow? I have done a lot of casual reading on giant snakes over the past five years. It's always fascinated me a bit. There's a documentary on giant anacondas that makes the rounds on The Discovery Channel. In the documentary alleged sightings of anacondas 40 feet in length and longer are largely debunked by scientists and herpetologists due to lack of evidence. Several scientists in the documentary did say that a 30 foot long anaconda(or even a handful of them) probably exists in the deep jungles of the South American Amazon river basin, especially in more remote areas that have not been explored by scientists. In 1974 a large anaconda attacked a boat which included an American scientist who was looking for extremely large anacondas. The snake exploded out of the water and managed to rip most of the scientist's shirt off of him before disappearing below the surface of the river estuary where the group was navigating by small boat. It was not seen again. The scientist who was attacked estimated, from the size of the snake's head and it's diameter that it was likely at least 25 feet long and possibly as long as 30 feet, weighing upwards of 600 lbs. If I'm not mistaken a 28 foot anaconda is in captivity at a zoo somewhere, and a reticulated python measuring 30 feet in length is also in captivity at a zoo in Thailand. |

I think it's considered authentic. It's been around for quite a while, and I don't remember anyone debunking it yet. I just remembered seeing it a while back, and so I did a quick google search. I managed to find it on my favorite cryptozoology news site, cryptomundo. Edited by CrowMagnumMan, Feb 7 2009, 02:13 PM.

Nice choice of music in there. Picture 1: Never seen that before. Better than most sea monster pictures I've seen because of the dorsal spines there. Picture 2: Giant squid. Probably Architeuthis dux. Very cool. I love giant squid. We've got plenty of pictures of dead giant squid, but no video of them alive in their natural habitat. Picture 3: Fire angel? Neat picture. But it looks like something that could very well have occurred naturally. If I had a video of this and it held its shape then it might be more interesting. Pictures 4-7: I think these are all the famous dead aliens images that have been around a while. I'm pretty sure they were debunked. But I can't remember how. Picture 8: Now that looks cool. It looks like some sort of gremlin. It's hard to tell if that's real or not. The image is fuzzy. I'd like to find the source of that picture. Pictures 9-11: Cool. I've never seen these before. It's a snowy location, so it could be in the Himalayas. Both Yeti and Sasquatch are considered to have brown fur I think. These are very good pictures. Picture 12: Hang on. I recognize this picture. The front end looks like part of an artist's rendering I've seen somewhere. And the back end looks somewhat real, but too blurry. Like it's from a small fish. It looks a bit photoshopped to me. But I'm not sure. Picture 13: This was pretty recent. I searched and searched for a link to back this up, but I remember what happened with this one. It turns out it was just somebody's dog. No big deal. It wasn't as big as was thought. Picture 14: Another one of those dead alien pictures. Picture 15: I'm guessing this was in South America. It's cool, but it doesn't mean giant spiders are about. In fact, the biggest spiders in South America aren't even the species that makes webs like that. It's usually groups of smaller spiders that make parachute webs like that. Picture 16: Well I don't know what to make of that. It could either be a dead dog or a dead bat. Picture 17: Creepy, but it looks kind of fake. Like, immobile. Picture 18: Cool picture. I think the picture itself is suggesting that it's fake. But I don't know. Picture 19: That one looks cool. Ghost pictures are kind of hard to take as seriously, because they are more easily faked than creature pictures. But then I don't really know what that's supposed to be in the window. I'd like to know more about this one. Picture 20: Cool, but real? Picture 21: I recognize this one. I know a lot of these older ghost pictures were fake, but I don't know about this one. Picture 22: Not much there. Picture 23: That one is really cool. The ghost seems to be touching the railing there. Don't know how that was done or if it's real or not, but I like it. Picture 24: Not sure. Could simply be the lighting. I'm pretty sure there's a man in the backseat, but he may just look odd from the lighting. Picture 25: This one could have been faked pretty easily, but the ghostly form looks plenty creepy. Picture 26: Jellyfish of some sort? Picture 27: I remember this one. I think it's Loch Ness. I don't think it's ever been specifically debunked, but I've always thought it was one of the more fake-looking Nessie photos. Picture 28: Ah yes, the face on Mars. It's looking less and less like a face all the time. ![]() Picture 29: Very recent, and a proven fake. It's a perspective shot. Picture 30: Every once in a while something like this washes up on shore. Most of the time it's just a whale. The rest of the time there's just no way of identifying it. Picture 31: The famous Surgeon's photo. Iconic in its representation of cryptozoology, but a proven fake. It wasn't until 1994 that the secret of the image was revealed, when a man named Christian Spurling, shortly before his death at the age of 90, made a confession. Spurling described a plot involving Wilson, himself, and big-game hunter Marmaduke Wetherell (his stepfather). Wetherell, seeking revenge for having been mocked when he had previously claimed to have found Nessie tracks along the side of the Loch (the tracks turned out to have been made with a dried hippo's foot), dreamed up the hoax. He asked Spurling to make a model of a serpent. Spurling did this by attaching a serpent's head and neck to a toy submarine. This model was then photographed in Loch Ness, and the picture given to Wilson, whose job it was to serve as a credible front-man for the hoax. ![]() In the original version of the image (bottom) the diminutive size of the Nessie model in relationship to the Loch can be seen. (The dark band along the top of the picture is the opposite side of the Loch.) The image given to the media was cropped to hide this perspective, making the "monster" appear larger than it actually was. Picture 32: The most famous frame grab from the Patterson footage. Still unexplained. Never properly debunked. Still the best Sasquatch footage ever recorded. If it's a fake, then it's a damn good one to have baffled researchers for this long. It's been impossible to replicate the footage. Picture 33: What's that? A cat? Picture 34: Seen it before. This is from some excellent Yeti footage. This video was taken by two hikers in their 1992 expedition in the Himalayas Mountains of Nepal. This famous clip which is known as the Snow Walker Video, depicts an apelike creature walking on two legs making its way through the snow. Picture 35: I first saw this photo in Karl P.N. Shuker's book In Search of Prehistoric Survivors. I wish I knew more about the photo, because it's one of the best cryptid photos I've ever seen. Picture 37: Oh yeah. This was really recent I think. I'm pretty sure nothing came of it because it's just a fish upside down, like some sort of ray or something. Picture 38: Haha. Very scary. |

A guy in the UK owns a giant tarantula aka a "Goliath Bird Eater"(Theraphosa Blondi) that will likely break the record for world's largest spider in the near future. The bird eater owned by this guy currently has a 10 inch leg span, about 2 inches smaller than the record holder(one with a 12" leg span), but it's preparing to "molt"(shed its skin), and would grow another two inches after this molt. Because this giant tarantula is a young spider the prospects of this creature exceeding 12" in leg span are very good:

One of the most fascinating phenomena of the natural world for me is tsunamis, or tidal waves. As a US Navy officer(in the mid 1980's) I was required to do a research paper and oral presentation on the subject. While reading about tsunamis last year I came upon another term, mega tsunamis. These are tidal waves of even greater size and power than tidal waves. Mega tsunamis have happened in Earth's history many times. The discovery of the massive crater under the Gulf of Mexico(called the Chixculub crater) is considered by scientists to have been created by a meteor or asteroid strike in the gulf millions of years ago. A link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicxulub_Crater Among the many effects of this strike, mega tsunamis thousands of feet high would have radiated outwards from the impact area, traveling at speeds greater than the speed of sound, and would made landfall on other continents, sweeping inland for as much as a hundred miles. Mega tsunamis are generally created as the result of an ocean impact by asteroid or meteor, or by underwater landslide. Scientists have long wondered where an underwater landslide large enough to create a mega tsunami might occur next. The answer: the island of Ciumbre Vieja in the Canary Islands, far out in the outer reaches of the Atlantic Ocean. The island itself is volcanic and part of it is slowly slipping away, by means of a large fault, and will eventually slide into the ocean. This part of the island has about 90-100 billion tons of mass and when it slams into the coastal waters of the main island an equally huge volume of water will be displaced, the initial surge caused by the landslide possibly as high as 50 meters(165 feet). The wave will radiate outwards rapidly and cross the Atlantic where, despite losing some of it's overall energy, it will still impact all along the eastern seaboard of the United States, generating waves several miles long and with run up heights reaching as high as 50 meters. This video is a simulation but illustrates what a mega tsunami striking a major east coast U.S. city might look like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKSHPx5EHQk From the disaster film Deep Impact(1998), an asteroid a mile and a half wide, and weighing perhaps 5 billion tons, slams into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of NC with the energy equivalent of 10,000 Hiroshima A-bombs going off at once, generating a 240 foot tall surge of water that races out from the impact area at over 500 mph. Note how easily the oil drilling platform is swept away. Arriving in New York, this mega tsunami reaches a colossal run up height of 1300 feet, taller than the World Trade Center Towers, and quickly blasts across the city: |

With little fanfare, or media coverage, an asteroid 35 meters wide passed perilously close to Earth recently: http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20090302/sc_space/asteroidfliespastearth An asteroid this size, or perhaps slightly smaller, is thought by scientists to have caused the massive aerial explosion in 1908 in the Tunguska region of Siberia(Russia), a blast that flattened 500,000 acres of forest. More on the Tunguska event of 1908: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event The Tunguska event, along with the eruption of the volcanic island of Krakatoa in 1883, are considered two of the most powerful explosions of a natural origin to ever occur on Earth.
