Not if you place the powder on your tongue and swallow immediately with a lot of water or other beverage. If you allow the powder to linger on your tongue or in your mouth you will experience the aftertaste: it's somewhat bitter.

I know, last year, Carol had a nasty cold and I bought her some Zicam, think that's the name and I thought she was being a big old baby, as I mixed it with soda, juice, tea and hot chocolate and she kept whinning that it tasted awful and it claims there is no taste. I had a slight cold in November and Carol mixed some of it up with my diet Pepsi.....what a horrible taste! cheeky sick smiley I apologized to Carol for that one! The good news: I have not had a recurring attack in my foot or toe. The bad news: I got it a little in my elbow(again) and in a digit(my thumb) for the first time. My doc has suggested that the cold weather we've been having(in the low 20's in the AM hours) may cause a flareup here and there. I have been drinking cherry, Cran-Cherry, or Pomegranate Cherry juice almost daily, and taking an enlarged, though not excessive, dose of vitamin C daily. I continue to drink a liter of water everyday. My doc says these things will probably not be enough, by themselves, as I get older, to control gout. I will inevitably have to go back on regular medication, as the only surefire means by which to control it. This will mean more $ out of my wallet: with medical insurance a month's supply of prescription uric-acid prevention medication will run me $60. That's going to be another $60/mo. bill, which really pisses me off. maniac

Sorry to hear the gout has landed in a couple of other areas, Lee. :( Hopefully, they won't hang around as long as the toe/foot attack lasted.

My Dad stopped in to see me on Thursday and he and my Mom had chatted on the phone, that morning. Dad is one of these guys that is quite careful about what he eats, in an effort to lower his cholesterol, as no matter how hard Dad has always worked at lowering his numbers, they remain higher than he'd like. Anyway, last time he saw his Dr, the Dr said Dad's bloodwork showed his thyroid isn't working up to snuff and prescribed Dad some meds to help control that. Dad never got them, not because as he said, of the price, but because he didn't want to add any other medication to his daily routine! That is, until he told Mom that he noticed no matter how careful he has been about his eating habits, he has been gaining weight. Mom told him that the thyroid meds would help with that.....Dad's getting his meds! :<!--emo&lol:-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

I'm glad to hear that your dad is going to take his medication. My own father hated to take his pills, but did so after considerable urging from family members, and his doctor.

My flareup of gout was, thankfully, just a flareup. I have been drinking Cran-cherry and Pomegranate Cherry juice about 3 days a week, and eating pitted cherries about twice a week, as well as drinking a liter of water a day. I believe this made a difference in beating back the gout from getting any worse. I also continue to take a 500 mg Vitamin C tablet daily. thumbs up

Things I've noticed since I started drinking cranberry or Pomegranate cherry juice daily, and taking a 500 mg tablet of vitamin C daily:

-I'm more regular, as pertains to answering the call of nature

-I have had drastically fewer tension headaches

-I feel slightly more energetic every day, though only slightly

-I have been sleeping a little better at night, only a little, but I have noticed a difference

Is it coincidence? Maybe, though I'm inclined to think it is not. shifty eyes

I kind of amaze myself with the fact I don't care for either! Now, the one 'melon' I could eat every day and 24 hours/day is, watermelon. I just love that stuff and Mom used to tell me, I got my red hair, because she ate and craved watermelon so much, when pregnant with me. Mr Green

To each his own I guess. Mr Green

When it came to taste in food me and my mother were practically identical in what we liked and disliked. As for me and my father that was another story: he liked a lot of things that I absolutely hated, and occasionally would prey on my strong dislikes of certain foods or beverages with practical jokes around the house. Examples:

-once, when I was 15, he poured Jack Daniels whiskey into a regular drinking glass in the refrigerator-he knew I liked to raid the refrig for sweet tea and he put it into the glass to make it look like tea. Predictably, I took this glass out and, believing it to be tea drank nearly a quarter of it before realizing something was terribly wrong with it's taste. freak out My mother was not happy about his joke on me, though he got a laugh out of it. shifty eyes

-once, when I was about 18, my father, knowing I hated liver, poured gravy all over a serving and gave me the plate, telling me it was a large pork chop. I couldn't see the meat so I sat down at the dinner table and dug into this gravy-covered meat... freak out

Hahahaha! While probably not very amusing to you at the time, those were horrid and funny little pranks. ;)

I adore liver! tongue-1 I can't seem to cook it like my Mom or Granddad could, I've tried on several occasions and Carol hates the thought of liver so much, she won't even try to make it for me, so if I get it, it's usually when I eat out.

I can't imagine slugging back Jack Daniels...man, that must have been a shocker! I have, picked up a cup, before and thought I was going to be drinking, say, diet soda and it's been something else and I think we have our taste buds set for one flavor and when it's something else, you stand right up and take notice.

If you were told to choose one meal as your final meal, what would you choose?

And you don't want to, trust me. Though I have never been a "liquor" drinker per say, preferring to keep my taste buds finely honed in on various varieties of beers, when I was a regular drinker of course, I did on occasion drink whiskey, or vodka, rarely straight, but usually mixed with some non-alcoholic beverage(e.g. coke with JD and orange juice with vodka).

Liquors I could never acquire a taste for: gin, scotch, or rum. nonono

Either a hellacious seafood platter, accompanied with beer, or: country fried steak(w/white gravy), mashed potatoes(w/brown gravy), green beans with vinegrete and diced onions topping, a roll with butter, a huge glass of sweet tea, and strawberry cheesecake for dessert. With either one of these meals in my belly I would die a happy man. groink!

Mmmm....either one sounds pretty yummy! tongue-1 I think I;d have a tough time narrowing it down to three choices.......

Meal # 1:
Lobster tail, shrimp, mashed potatoes, Caesar salad, peanut butter cake with peanut butter frosting and a nice diet Pepsi (OK, several!)

Meal # 2:
Nice, thick rib-eye, baked potato with butter/sour cream and fresh corn. Diet Pepsi, ice water and a dish of chocolate/vanilla ice cream with hot fudge and nuts.

Meal # 3:
Nice thick pork chop, mashed potaotes with country-style milk gravy, fresh spinach wilted in butter, diet Pepsi and my Grandmother's homemade strawberry shortcake...she makes the shortcake like a huge sweetened biscuit and we pour milk over it with some sugar.

I have always been a competent cook, my mother teaching me the basics while I was a teenager in high school. My "training" in the kitchen was not optional either. tongue-1 Looking back now my mother did me a great favor, and service, by instructing me in the fine art of cooking basics, and most importantly, taught me the importance of "reading the label". nod Do you cook? If so, what are you good at making in the kitchen? What things are you not so good at making? Got any recipes you'd like to share? Post them here. Any kitchen "horror stories"? Post them here also. All replies about cooking and cooking-related welcome. Maybe even a few that aren't. tongue-1

What Packmule is good at preparing and/or cooking:

beef stroganoff
spaghetti and meatballs
steak
salads
hot dogs and other assorted wieners
cookies

Things Packmule is not good at making:

fried chicken
any kind of casseroles
any kind of cakes and/or pies

groink!

I come from a long line of 'cooks'. Mom was always a great cook, my Dad is, as were my paternal grandparents and my maternal grandmother. I recall being 4 or 5 and at the time, KF's favorite meal was, Shake-and-Bake chicken, mashed potatoes/gravy and corn. When I would stay with my paternal grandparents, Grandma ALWAYS had that meal for me. I also had the fun of helping prepare the meal. Grandma would pull a stool over to the kitchen sink, tie an apron around me and I'd climb up and help wash the chicken, then shake it! Mr Green When I was 9, I attended a cooking class given at the high school for a week, one Summer, I recall Grandma and Granddad purchasing ingredients for one dish and I proudly made them dinner.

I always helped Mom, whenever I could and she always accepted my efforts to help bake Christmas cookies as a kid. I spent an entire week with Grandma and Granddad, the year I graduated from high school, looking through their tons of cook books and we baked anything and everything for one entire week.....it's one of my fondest memories.

The first meal I ever made in my first apartment was, Hamburger Helper Cheeseburger Macaroni. Mr Green Working second shift for about 12-13 years, I got out of the habit of really cooking, except on a day off. Many times, my lunch before leaving for work was Campbell's Chunky Soup, eaten cold and right out of the can.

When I cook, I;m told I make some good meals and my better meals would be:

-Chili
-Stuffed Shells
-Steak
-Pork Chops
-Roast Beef
-Grilled Cheese
-Chicken and Biscuits

As for baking, I do like that and make a mean chocolate chip cookie, peanut butter cookie, rum balls, no-bake cookie, cakes.

My shortcoming in cooking/baking would be mainly my lack of patience, so I won't do things I might be decent at!

no-bake cookie
confused What is that?

My progression from ignoramus in the kitchen to competent cook has not been without some setbacks, and in a few cases, outright disasters:

-Once I had a yellow cake explode, literally, inside a conventional oven.

-I once attempted to make a cake for my father. The problem: I forgot the yeast. The result looked more like a brick and nothing like a cake. freak out

-I have burned, and the vast majority of them to a crisp, pizzas, steaks, chops, ribs, and even homemade bread. The bread did prove useful in one regard, after it was removed from the oven, and allowed to cool: it made a decent frisbie, for about a half hour.
