I believe this might be the first topic at this site with political tones. Do you think George W. Bush, the President Of The United States, is doing a good job? Please cast your vote and post about it. Thread starter-my answer: I'm not sure. I'll elaborate more on this later. nod |

I am also of the 'not sure' feeling. To be perfectly honest, I don't know if anyone could do any worse, I mean, the papers and the news is full of Bush Bashers, but with all that's going on in the world, I think Bush is doing the best he can. Not saying I agree 100% with all his decisions and I don't disagree 100% with all his decisions. I just hate seeing a constant bashing, it's always easy to say this is what we should be doing or that's what we should be doing, but it's always easier to sit back and pass judgement, when you don't have to be in the hot seat making all these decisions. I think the world since WWII has become a lot smaller and a lot more complex than anyone could ever have imagined it would be. I certainly don't want the title of President, so I find it difficult to do a whole lot of complaining. |

Although I voted for George W. Bush in the last election(over Democrat Al Gore), I was not really enamored with either candidate. To be honest Kimi my political views(the few that I have) are most closely matched by the Libertarian Party. I could go into some detail about what this Party stands for but I won't. You can "search engine" it and learn anything you might want to know. I agree with you that George W. Bush is doing the best he can. I also wouldn't want the job either. My problem with Bush really comes down to one issue, and it's a big one: his justification for the Iraq War. The President used the presence of WMD's(Weapons Of Mass Destruction) in Iraq as justification to invade that country and oust Hussein. Now I know Hussein was a murderous, tyrannical, cruel despot, and the fact he is no longer in power is fine by me. The problem is that there were never really any true WMDs found-there were, to be sure, some chemical weapon shell casings and other accessories consistent with chemical weapons, but that was it. Either our intelligence was poor on a colossal scale or there was some bending of the truth, if you will, by our Commander-In-Chief, regarding the presence of these WMDs. I expect my President to be honest, 100% of the time, no exceptions. Here is where I believe Bush has failed, and it is a failure created entirely by him and the staff surrounding him, in particular Secretary Of State Condoleeza Rice. There has always been the grumbling as well that George W. Bush was a child "born with a silver spoon in his mouth". He is from an extremely wealthy family Kimi, his father a President and former Director of the CIA. His family has connections, money and power. I believe this helped "Dubya" get elected to the White House. If I sound like I am no fan of Bush then I would say you are correct, though by no means do I consider him the worst President the US has ever had. I sure would like to see a President that gives some kind of damn about working-class people such as myself. IMO George W. Bush is, regarding blue collar people in the U.S., totally clueless and indifferent. thumbs down |

It just seems like Bush is either unable or uninterested in dealing with domestic issues. I feel he misled all of us into this mess in Iraq and now, without an exit strategy, he's in over his head. What's with these gasoline prices? How much will it take before we tap into our reserves? Plus, the constant fear mongering (terror alerts, wire taps) is frightening. I feel as if we're losing our rights for the sake of security. I'm reminded of this great quote by Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." |

I have read tripe in the newspaper by economic analysts implying that a move to tap into our reserves might come should the price of gasoline hit $5/gallon. At this point the only "exit strategy" I think "Dubya" will get right is his own, when he leaves the Oval Office, to a fat yearly pension, and public speaking tours(charging thousands of dollars per speech). thumbs down |

If it gets to $5/gallon it'll cripple our economy. Who's gonna be able to drive to work with prices like that? There'll be a lot of car-pooling, that's for sure. |

Indeed. There should be more car pooling in Atlanta, GA, Dan, according to so called "studies". Is there? Nope. As of last year 85% of all cars driven around Atlanta on the roads and interstates were driven solo, with one occupant. The bus system here in Atlanta, MARTA, is often unreliable and has been cutting service back on it's routes for the last several years(to balance MARTA's budget, which was thrown out of whack a couple of years ago by a large-scale case of internal fraud and abuse of $ within MARTA's executive ranks-MARTA took a massive PR hit and is still recovering from that public "black-eye"). For every ten cars on the road in Atlanta on any given day, between 8 and 9 are occupied by a single occupant. I know people Dan that would rather drive a half mile to the pharmacy to pick up meds than walk. Probably the same kind of folks who try to charge a bag of potato chips at a convenience store on their ******* Mastercard. I once saw a woman enter a BP and write a check for a pack of gum. Were the people of Atlanta light bulbs Dan, you can be sure there are a plenty of them around of the low wattage variety. |

I don't think Bush is doing a very good job as the President of the United States. To start, he got elected in a very sleezy manner. Every time I've seen him he's been fired up, running his head off about "terror" and "American soil" and "gi--uh... You're not gonna fool me again!" or something or other. I seem to be the only one in the known universe who thought that the way he behaved at that one conference with Kerry was extremely immature. "Waah! I want my turn! I didn't do nothin', let me speak!" He might as well have stood up in front of America and said that. Quite frankly, I don't give a hoot about oil. What to we win by going overseas, inducing mindless slaughter, and coming back with barrels of black, icky liquid salvaged from the ground? We get the loss of the former events, as well as more to add to Global Warming. And I'm living in the worst place for my views, Texas! George W. Bush gets my official stamp of DISapproval. thumbs down Edited by Thilian, Nov 16 2008, 10:27 PM.

What I usually do is redirect people who bash Democrats and different things like that. It's sick, though, how the odds are against someone voicing their opinions in such a community. My World Geography teacher last year put his lesson on hold one day simply to argue with one of his students about whether or not George Bush is a good president. My teacher thinks he's the best, by the way.
While I should think I respect others' respective opinions, I'm glad that this community is discussing this issue so openly like this. |

To be honest there has been little, if any, discussion of politics at this site since I created it back in late January of 2006. I have gotten the impression that the active members of this board are not "drawn" to political discussions, though I could obviously be wrong about that. I considered prohibiting the discussion of politics at Monsterland Forums, but decided against that for two reasons: firstly I didn't want to eliminate a possible source of communication among the members of this board in it's first year, and when I'm trying to grow this site. Secondly, I believe talking about politics can be productive and civil, despite being on the "sidelines" at so many other boards as I watched disasters unfold, political threads turning into name calling and other ugly verbal exchanges. |

I haven't been in on as many of these occasions, but I did witness two threads that were closed for this reason. In the first, two posters were talking about America and the government, and one of them ended up calling the other "a ****ing idiot". In the second, the "idiot" told the other poster to "shut up". What's disturbing is that the last example took place in a topic that wasn't centered around anything relative to politics, but a poll on which kaiju the members thought would win in a fight. I think the drift started in one of my posts, where I was joking about the fact that Rodan was going to get revenge for losing in the poll. |

While what you describe is obviously bad, it pales in comparison to some things I've seen posted on the internet between individuals with differing opinions about things. After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, and in the ensuing months, there was an atmosphere of rabid bigotry and hatred between black and white individuals at a Yahoo discussion group in topics about the violence in New Orleans and the Super Dome following the catastrophic devastation of the hurricane. The racial epithets thrown around by those participating in the discussion reminded me of dialogue I once read in a Civil War book(a work of fiction). Topic: do you think, Thilian, that "Dubya" will judged, historically, as one of this country's worst Presidents?

Man, that's just disgusting... You know that Houston got most of the New Orleans guys, right? I had a bunch at my school, and some even stayed. I never heard anything bad said to one of them. I did hear the word a lot in the locker room, but the kid who did most of that got sent to an alternative campus for saying it in the presence of a black girl. It wasn't really a heated situation, though. Everyone was laughing about it. The girl included. The kid (who had that same year told me I needed to 'fix my face' and asked me if I was 'retarded') was denying everything. He got shipped away, though. He was lucky if you ask me. In the locker rooms that same period, he'd attempted to set another kid's hair on fire for stealing his cigarettes. That good ole Ax / lighter combination. (I imagine downtown was worse)
He'll certainly go down as the country's most incompetent. He deserves to be remembered as one of the all-time most useless presidents, though. Edited by Thilian, Dec 3 2008, 12:40 PM.
