Well, it is that time of year again. Some like saying thank you all day and some want to spend 25 days celebrating a dietys' birthday, but nothing is quite like celebrating scary shit. And out of the month of Halloween comes the first of two "official" topics I am making. The first one is on the scream series:

Set to revive the slasher series into goodness in the 90's, a time where Freddy was dead and Jason was handed to Freddy's House, Wes Craven made a film where teenagers thought it was the ultimate horror film and older fans thought an over-hyped film that was not a masterpiece, let alone a classic. But the series has become a cult phenomenon. 3 films have been made, with an announced 2 more coming on the way in 2010 and 2012.

The story fallows a girl named Sindy, who mother was killed and has for almost half a decade has been haunted by many killers all wearing a "Ghost Face" mask.

The film did what it set out to do and reestablish dominance in the box office for the slasher genre and has since had classic spoofs like "Shriek if you know what I did Last friday the 13" (you thought GMK was tough!) and "Scary Movie" (Wazz Up!) including a cameo in Robot Chicken.

So, what do you have to say about this movie series that have become as recognizable as Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and even the crap fest Friday the 13?

That I do not believe that Friday The 13th(1980) was a "crap fest". I will admit that later installments in the "Friday The 13th" series were subpar but IMO the first three films in this series are fairly good. The first one helped establish the "slasher" horror genre. Considering director Sean Cunningham's low budget for the initial "Friday" film I thought he did a great job making an entertaining film without a whole lot of money to work with.

As to Scream(1996) I liked it okay. I have only seen the first "Scream" film. I have not seen any of it's sequels. And the lead female character's name was "Sidney"(Prescott), played by Canadian born actress(and hottie tongue-1 ) Neve Campbell.

The theatrical trailer for Scream, directed by Wes Craven:

I've never seen Scream, but I always got the impression from the trailer that it was sort of a satire of slasher flicks, while simultaneously being a slasher flick. It looks pretty decent, but derivative of older slashers like Halloween.

There are numerous homages to older "slasher" horror films in Scream, no doubt because of Wes Craven's respect for these movies. While there are, I think, satirical elements to Scream you better believe there's still plenty of blood, scary scenes and over the top violence(by the killer) which you would fully expect from any Wes Craven directed film. winky

None of that is in swamp thing or Music of the Heart.

But in all seriousness, the whole thing about mentioning other slasher films, prominently Halloween, is a good thing. Plus, the murder of Drew Berrymore at the begining is a classic example of suspence building and one of the numerous refrences to Nightmare On Elm Street, Wes's proudest creation, in the film.

Here's a question for you, G2K: who was hotter in these movies? Courteney Cox or Neve Campbell? tongue-2

A fourth "Scream" film may, or may not get made, depending on who you believe these days. Here's the latest update: http://www.horror-movies.ca/horror_13792.html

I'm not very good at writing longer reviews, but I'll do my best.

The film opened strong. That's a classic opening scene right there. It builds really well and ends with a shocking conclusion. Right from the start I took note of Marco Beltrami's score. It's no masterpiece, but it's a good bombastic and eerie score. You don't get a lot of scores of this style anymore, so it was refreshing to hear one of that orchestral intensity.

The trailer for the film gave the impression that the film was sort of a satire of the slasher genre. It is that, for sure, but I was really surprised at how unflinching the film was. The opening scene is extremely brutal. In this opening scene Scream proves that it is no half-baked spoof. Scream is an intense ride from start to finish.

The script is very well-crafted. It works as a loving tribute to the slasher genre and manages to maintain an impressive level of suspense and paranoia throughout. I found myself constantly second-guessing myself over the identity of the killer right up to the last moment. When the killer's identity is finally revealed, it was a genuine shock and surprise.

I can definitely see why this film has become a modern classic. It's a tightly-plotted and highly entertaining film. There are plenty of shocking deaths, suspense, and actual tension. There is a serious lack of actual tension in today's films. So seeing Scream was a very refreshing experience in a way.
