Well, it is that time of year again. Some like saying thank you all day and some want to spend 25 days celebrating a dietys' birthday, but nothing is quite like celebrating scary shit. And out of the month of Halloween comes the first of two "official" topics I am making. The first one is on the scream series:

Posted Image

Set to revive the slasher series into goodness in the 90's, a time where Freddy was dead and Jason was handed to Freddy's House, Wes Craven made a film where teenagers thought it was the ultimate horror film and older fans thought an over-hyped film that was not a masterpiece, let alone a classic. But the series has become a cult phenomenon. 3 films have been made, with an announced 2 more coming on the way in 2010 and 2012.

The story fallows a girl named Sindy, who mother was killed and has for almost half a decade has been haunted by many killers all wearing a "Ghost Face" mask.

The film did what it set out to do and reestablish dominance in the box office for the slasher genre and has since had classic spoofs like "Shriek if you know what I did Last friday the 13" (you thought GMK was tough!) and "Scary Movie" (Wazz Up!) including a cameo in Robot Chicken.

So, what do you have to say about this movie series that have become as recognizable as Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and even the crap fest Friday the 13?

That being said, thanks to saving up all cash and making a few moves at school, I was finally able to see the film in theatres
God almighty, have ticket prices gotten so steep that a person has to go to the trouble of "saving up cash" to simply see one movie? loco2

...my first rated R film also, yay
Did the theater sales associate check your ID at the sales counter?

Ticket prices are $7.50 right now. That is quite a bit of money for someone like me. I have to thank my buisness of selling swin suit issues of Sports Illustrated that helped fund my theatre going. Now I am just hoping your letter with the $$$ for me shipping the BOOGENS to you comes... if not, I may not be able to see it again... only this time with friends including a female.

And nope, and I was worried as hell. I don't have any real ID card, so I carried a combonation of a copy of my birth certificate, my school ID card, and a report card (just in case they needed to know I was THE Evan Brehany). But no checking of IDs. Even though there is a big sign taped to the window of the box office clerk.

I'd love to see this, but I just hate going to theaters. I think I might wait for the Blu-ray.

If you hate going to theatres because of the crowds, don't worry, only barely half of the theatre I was in was filled when I saw it. I doubt there will be that many people when you see it. Plus, seeing it in theatres gives us a greater chance for pt. 5, a pt. 5 which will not be messed around with Williamson's VAMPIRE DIARY stuff, which is actualy being filmed in Georgia (between here and Atlanta).

And yes Lee, I have been collecting. But when $$$ is needed, I have to sell them off. And most of them I get free, either from Hooters (like one time we had to ask for directions and I snuck an issue out) or hospital rooms. Though I gave one for free as a gift for someone's B-Day one time back a couple of years.

How I ususaly do it is like this, the person gives me $10 in advanced and another $5 after the job is done. The new issue, which is the most wanted, is ususaly $8. Plus or minus 50 cents and anything I may give to my mother, I make a good bit of proffit.

Hmm, yeah, I do want to support the movie so we can get a part 5, especially if I like Scream 4. Guess I won't rule it out yet. Mostly I just prefer home video because it's a more comfortable viewing environment overall. I don't have the same nostalgic view of movie theaters that most people do because most of my movie watching experience growing up was spent with VHS, DVD, and more recently, Blu-ray.

Well, just keep in mind box office numbers are more important to producers and execs than DVD sales.

In the meanwhile, the film as of today broke the $42 million mark... pretty bad.

I make a good bit of profit
Don't tell that to the IRS. winky tongue-1

Most of the reviews I've seen for the fourth "Scream" film say it either reeked or was only marginally better than the second and third films in this franchise.

Thread drift: Evan, I've seen nothing but good reviews for the horror film Insidious(2011) and yet I've seen comments posted by you at FB in which you seem to have disdain for this movie. Why? heyo

Critics are critics. As a fan, I say that it is the best film of all the sequels. And I am not the only one. Alot of people on other sites believe so too. Including individuals on Tohokingdom. If I had to rate them, I would rate the series as such:

1. Scream
2. Scream 4
3. Scream 2
4. Scream 3

My brother thought that SCREAM 4 was equal to the original. I wouldn't say that. As a horror fan, I say it is the best slasher film in a good long while. There is just so much to respect the film for. The bashing of remakes is a good thing about the film. As I am one who dwells with teens, it is surprising how many of them are unaware of the originals and such. Those who watch SCREAM 4 may be educated as such. Additionaly, there is a good bit of poster porn in the film. Meaning, posters for a good many horror films are in the film. Halloween 3, The Thing, Death Proof, and a bunch of other films. Makes the film visualy awesome. The metaphysical element of the film is all good. That's about all I can say without spoilers unless the poster thing can really be counted as a spoiler.

As for my disdain towards INSIDIOUS, I have nothing against it per se, but I do feel the need to try to support SCREAM 4. The Weinstein company owns Halloween and Scream, along with some other franchises. Slasher franchises. If SCREAM 4 doesn't make money, we might as well say goodbye to the films unless they are lucky enough to get a direct to video release. The more $$$ Scream 4 makes, the better.

Now, I know that since you have taken into consideration my facebook posts, you may see me as a hypocrite. Well, Saddly, though I am 17 I cannot pay for minors to see films till I am 21 (damn it). But me and my friends still wanted to see it togeather therefore atleast we paid for two. So atleast of my money, the film has gotten $15 and $7.50 of a friend. I just hope that word of mouth may pass by. A good full theatre (seeing we got two multiplexes playing the film right now in my town) can produce $22,000. Every little bit helps.

I don't think you're a hypocrite, Evan. I do think sometimes you struggle a bit to express yourself and your views on these films and other things in life. You'll get better at doing that as you grow older. winky

No, not really. In the past some of your FB posts and those at this message board and KG have sometimes been IMO ambiguous. No big deal. Don't worry about it. winky

Saw the same link on scream-trilogy.net. Personaly, I feel the only place left for them to go with this whole "family evils lead to Ghostface killings" angle is stuff on the father's side. Otherworld, it is time to give it up. I would also like to know if the early talk of Scream 5 being a direct continuation of SCREAM 4 is still in effect. Personaly, they need to try a new angle. Maybe something like Sydney adopting a child who in the beginning of the film saw his family massacared by Ghostface or something like that. Maybe even make some further use of the Zombie and Scarecrow Ghostface masks.

Heck, they could try to do something with all of the other horror films. I mean, they keep saying "what is your favorite movie" and "the rules to survive a horror film" but really, they are not really talking about horror in general, rather mostly just slasher films. And though Suspiria, Dawn of the Dead, and Halloween 3: Season of the Witch - which fallow a good bit of a different set of rules - get mention, it is only in passing.

Not to mention that they could do some good stuff reguarding the visual style. Really, 90's Wes Craven was pretty good. Nothing he has done in the 2000's has surpassed his work in films like NEW NIGHTMARE and the original SCREAM. The camera work in SCREAM was interesting, and at times the camera work alone help build the suspense or tension in a scene, such as when the shots of Tatum talking to Ghostface start turning oblique, at an angle. That was great. Not to mention that in NEW NIGHTMARE, Wes (along with J Peter Robinson) did a verry sensitive moment in the film, where Heather Langenkamp had to start taking those sleeping pills. What makes it so intimate was Heather's reaction and how the music starts playing the theme and then suddently stops after a couple of notes. If Wes could take up that kind of directoral style again, and if Kevin could find the time to do script re-writes himself instead of letting his script get eaten up by Ehren friggin Krueger, there could be a truly good film which would be equal to the original or maybe better.

Not to mention Ghostface is a Ghost. How can someone not think of some creative imagery with that?

From what I have read, the DVD and Blu-Ray varriations will have the same spcial features so I can't complain, though I have heard that the documentry STILL SCREAMING will not be released on DVD, only blu-ray. Here's to hoping that Biography will show it.

Scream 1 was the best and probably will be the best out of all four. I've never seen the fourth and I don't see myself doing so. The 3rd Scream movie was by far the most ridiculous film ever made in the series. The plot was basically a "behind the scenes" version of the original ....

Two writers have been hired for the planned MTV produced "Scream" TV series: http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3245724/writers-announced-for-mtvs-scream-series/

No specific date has been announced for the start of this series. There's also no word(yet) on whether a fifth "Scream" film will be made. ghostface
