The second post I talked about when I made the scream thread. This movie series is so legendary, so talked about, and somade fun of that this film actualy challenged Freddy for his popularity points, despite being older.![]() ![]() This all started when a producer wanted to make a movie, and hired John Carpenter to direct and Deborah Hill to help write and Moustapha Akkad to executive produce. The film was a slow earner at first, but then grew into the start of the slasher films, unlike the Phyco films and the Texas Chain Saw Massacre which while successful sadly did not have enough fule and fire to start the slasher genre explosion. Since the classic, we have gotten more classics like H2, H4, and the remake. Sadly, H5, H20, and H:R were disappointing. But before I end, I want to also mention the standalone film: ![]() My second favorite film in the series, tied with H4 and before H1 Edited by packmule, Oct 2 2008, 06:56 PM.

I have to respectfully disagree, IMO Freddy would win against Michael, here's are my reasons: 1: Freddy's already dead and has always returned after his defeat 2: Freddy would use fear against Michael, everyone fears something, Jason feared something, so Im sure Michael would as well. 3: Jason is physically more stronger then both Michael and Freddy and Fred was able to survive hits from Jason, so Im sure Freddy would be able to take Michael's hits. 3: Michael uses a Kitchen Knife as his main weapon, it wont be as effective as Freddy's glove or Jason's Machete, also Freddy was able to take quite alot of damage from Jason's weapon, so Michael's knife wouldnt be as much of a problem, also Freddy was able to injure Jason quite alot during their battle, Jason can withstand more damage then both Michael and Freddy, so Im sure Freddy's blades would cause more damage to Michael Body. 4: Freddy didnt loss to Jason, it was Lori Campbell who defeated him by chopping his head off, also that ending scene is a dream sequence so that means Jason is asleep and is walking into a trap.

A remake that generated $42.2 million in its opening weekend, Evan. The horror movie themed website reviews for this film are running about half positive and half negative. Still, not everyone obviously hates this movie.

I am talking about hardcore fans. Because in the end, that is who matters when it comes to how successful a film is, the fans. But since I brought it up, there are mentionings in casting contracts that there are going to be atleast also a H3. But I wonder where are they going to get the originality to make another Halloween film pertaining to MM while the original did not except for an unusual cameo... |

To ourselves, the fans, I agree with you here. To the studios that fund these films, what matters is money, that is, how much money the film makes and the resulting return on the studio's investment. |

Well, my fears of Michael being without a mask as what previous photos have shown are now calmed since I see a mask, but I like the plot twists. Not only does this film seem to be the same format as the last, prequel at the same time as a sequel/remake, but I like the plot twists as the new character Cheryl Moon Zombie is playing along with Micharl wearing a hood in some scenes. Not to mention another plot twisted uncovered a long time ago being a cult that's motto is "What Would Michael Do", which in that case could this be leading to a remake of H6? The thoughts this provokes... |

"Bad taste is the Petrol of the American dream." -Dr. Sam Loomis Well, I just saw RZH2. I got to say, it is an interesting film. It's not terrible good. The first RZH is defiently better. So is the fourth film and the first film and the second film. However, this film is not as bad as what other people make it out to be. Here's my wrap on it. As John Carpenter told Rob Zombie to do when John was asked for advice from Rombie reguarding the remake, John said, "Make it your own". That is what Zombie did. And what he made was pretty much the opposite of what was done with the characters in the original series. And I am not talking about quality, I am talking about what actualy happens. And the characters are truly Zombie's now because this is not a remake of the first H2. What he does exactly is pretty much bring into fruition an idea that Halloween 4 tried to pick up on for Halloween 5 but somehow was never enacted upon (killer child too crazy even after films like VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED, WHO WOULD KILL A CHILD, and CHILDREN OF THE CORN back then?): a relative of Michael's having the same evil he does. Though not doing it the simple way like how H4 did it (have Michael die and by touch passed down the evil), we see Laurie go through a much more painful process to get to basicaly the same road. It is something very, very interesting to see once you get away from all of the boobs and the "keep on truckin'™". However, it is interesting to see that not only is it Laurie or Michael that is crazy. Some characters show that maybe we have, metaphoricaly, alittle Michael in all of us. This is shown through scenes like when Brackett or Linda's father tries to kill Sam Loomis. Loomis has these traits too. In fact, it is interesting what is done with the character. Loomis has not been warped in the same way Laurie, per se, was. However, he will never truly capture Michael because like in the old series Michael is the ying to Loomis' yang. No, it is because Loomis is just as corupt. And like many a movie character, Loomis sacrifices himself (or so we see) for a chance of redemption at the end. However, too bad not everyone in the film tries to make up for their sins. Zombie in the end depicts a sinfull world. I mean, disreguard your religion - would you like to live in the world that Rob Zombie created? Loose girls that are proud of their boobs, no need to watch your language, and such? Well, that is fine, but you will have to live with Michael also. That is the main difference between the old series and the new series. While Michael was the right hand of God in the sense that if you sin you die. In this new series, no one is innocent. Sherrif Bracket. The most he did was tell Loomis what he really thoguht of him. But other than that, he is the most possitive character in the film (surprising for Douriff, who ususaly plays an antagonistic role or has some sort of crudeness to him). That doesn't stop Laurie from trying to kill him before being shot. Only person who survived was a kid, and it was not because he was innocent, it was because he got the keep on truckin'™ out of there before Michael would do anything. But in the end, what is Michael? Is he evil because he is taking his anger out for he had a bad childhood? Is he pure, unkillable evil? Not really any of those. If anything, he is not acting out his own rage, but rather his mother's. It just took Michael to snap and kill for himself before he would kill for his mother and through death finaly give their family peace. Or it could also be Michael taking revenge on society for making his family the way it ended up, with all but one person dieing and pretty much keep on truckin'™ up his live and making him go psychotic. In the end, the motivation is to give his family peace through out what Michael may percieve as the only way - death. Enough of the content. Let's talk style. I got to say, while alot of the first RZH film is pretty much just replayed, there are some points I like. Again, the use of 1970's pop culture and such is kept alive here. And I am a 70's guy myself in a way. I like the culture that was the thing back then and Zombie brings it in. And with it comes one thing I am truly happy he did. Maybe the best thing in the whole film - got Alice Cooper to be in the Halloween series. While the first RZH soundtrack has Cooper's "Only Women Bleed" (I should know, I own the soundtrack), we get Cooper in visualy via a poster. Very, very cool. Finaly, he is in both Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween franchises. Now let's talk about Zombie's actual filming and editing. There is alot of stuff here that while the quality is not that great save for the script analysis I have in a long ass paragraph above, Zombie's filmmaking skills have reached a pentacle here. The things to pay attention for are scenes where they gain momentum. The more you go through the film, the less and less the "keep on truckin'™" and the boobs are. Though the aforementioned was at the beginning, the beginning did give us something to really chew on because of Loomis' greed - his second book on Myers which set things in motion in a way other than the usual "Oh, Michael is back, run for your keep on truckin'™ lives". You kind of see that not only is there a reoccuring trama of being a victim in RZH, but she has to know that it was a sibling. A sibling she never knew she had. A sibling that is for some reason trying to kill her. And now that she knows she has said sibling, her life is ruined. Like if she was related to Charles Manson or that girl who was raped by Roman Polanski. Her life is screwed. Atleast movie stars know what they are getting into when they become a star. This is something exepected for Laurie so if you keep that information in mind, we can get some great stuff. The first of these is Annie's death. Or elongated death. The style is very good. Yeah, we see that Michael kills her. And while he kills her, we go to a scene of a car going down the road with our main dynamic character in it while we still hear the screams and ravings from Annie's tourture. And when Laurie finds her, it is kind of sad. We see intercut with her finding Annie's body clips of what we didn't see when we saw and heard Annie being attacked by Michael. Not only is Laurie going through what I described in the paragraph above, but she just lost the last person she knew who she could relate to via the 2007 attack. Surprisingly, the scene doesn't have words like "keep on truckin'™" in there. So it is sad in that way. Scott's acting is really nice. Then it is milked when Bracket finds her daughter dead. While again Douriff doesn't cry like he should (a complaint some had about the first RZH), he is more emotional and between finding the body and intersplicing it with what I could assume is home movie footage of Daniel Harris back from her "Halloween 4" and "Halloween 5" years, it is a really nicely edited scene, especialy when all audio sans the music is pulled back. Really gives the moment momentum. Another nice example of Zombie's ability is a message he tries to get to us with parallele imagery. "We all have alittle caveman inside of us" says Brack as he chomps down on a good piece of pizza as Micharl chomps down on a poor kanine victim. Parallele imagery is something which is good. More imagery which is good - along with the editing - are the flashes that Michael and Laurie experience. Such as Laurie's first vision of wanting to kill Annie. Very nicely done. Especialy with a clip like showing a bloody Laurie Strode with a blood-drawn upside down crucifix drawn on her forehead. Michael's imagery is also nice. Makes sense. All of the Halloween-looking creatures dining at a table with the family united once Michael is dead. It is kind of like an allegory. The Halloween creatures are the rulers of heaven and in heaven is Michael, his mother, and Laurie, both of who are shown to be dead. Very nice abstract imagery to go with an allegory. But of course, as part of the dream, it stops once we see Laurie "wake up", meaning that there is still work to do in Michael's case. The ending though is something to marvel at. The ending is something which rarely a horror film has since normaly a horror film acts like a canvas that gets smaller and smaller and bleaker and bleaker visualy. Visualy, RZH2 is different. We are not confined to the barn but rather to the area outside of the barn as well. And we also have Michael being surrounded not just by police but also a helicopter and bright lights and a whole bunch of stuff. Truly original. It is unmarked territory in the franchise's history. In the end, we see the Laurie - like Jamie all those years ago - also go under the same evil Michael is in. And the film ends with a reoccuring symbol - a white horse that is pretty much a symbol of what Michael and Laurie act out like it's definition in the medical book like shown in the first couple of seconds of the film. Only thing bad about the ending is that Michael gets 100% unmasked without even the hood he had on to atleast hide his face (I don't mind seeing his beard, as long as there is no definitive emotion to be seen as to keep the iconic mask's function - the ability for the viewer to project any emoton or facial look onto the mask because of it's plainess). But yeah, in the end, we get a good enough ending with Micharl presumably dead, Loomis presumably dead through I can think of some absurd reason he could be alive (oh, Michael just got rid of Loomis' appendix) and such. However, the end - especialy with an music-only ending which really does the same thing "Mad World" does for a film like "Donnie Darko", sum up a point or points in the film. Love does hurt. Love does burn. It's Michael's love for his mother that is making him kill and his wanting to give his family peace that makes him his own victim when people do try to kill him in self defence. In the end, I liked Halloween 2. If I have to give it a rating, it would be a 6.5. If I had to give it an alphabetical rating, it would be a B-. Rob Zombie did a good job with trying to make something so iconic and well known his own. And with it, he makes the tale visualy, subtexualy, and story-wise, different. And while the main characters are "In Name Only" (Loomis = LINO), Michael is pretty much still as murderous and for the most part the best looking since the original till the mask starts wearing out too much once H2 gets half way over. Very, very nice. Not anywhere as bad as H6 or H:R or H:5. Maybe alittle better than H20. Of course, I do not include H3 because it is very, very different. Too bad a different director is doing Halloween 3D. I could easily see Laurie breaking out and re-creating the stuff from the first RZH and gaining her own mask, becoming a female Myers while Carpenter's original idea for H4 for being Michael comming back as a spiritual force (a la GMK) and doing the killing of his own, possibly spreading the madness. And maybe show a better hearted Loomis, making him a second dynamic character in the series after Laurie going from good to bad and Loomis going from bad to good it Michael being the connection. :p Let's see a Friday the 13th film do that. As of right now, the Halloween remakes are the best slasher remakes. |
