After watching the latest EliteXC event the other night I figured I'd start a topic and ask if anyone around here watches MMA. Personally, I catch it when it is on network TV, Spike, or ESPN, but I'm not a big enough fan to pay for the PPV events. Once in awhile I'll try to hit a bar that's showing them though. So anyway the "internet sensation" streetfighter Kimbo Slice lost Saturday night. He as supposed to fight veteran Ken Shamrock but due to an injury they forced Shamrock out and replaced him with a relatively unknown fighter, Seth Petruzelli. Petruzelli knocks Kimbo down about 10 seconds into the fight and then after hitting him a few times while he was down, the ref calls the fight. It was a pretty crazy event for the MMA world, but the truth is "Kimbo" was never a proven MMA fighter to begin with. He was an internet legend with his youtube brawls, thrown into MMA and paid big bucks to fight on tv. Now theat he's lost, I kinda wonder about the future of EliteXC itself. Their fighter's arent nearly as skilled as UFC's, and now that the Kimbo hype is over they don't have alot to fall back on. Some people are also saying the Kimbo vs. Seth fight was thrown, but I don't agree. Seth got lucky and managed to jab Kimbo in just the right spot, allowing him to stun him temporarily and go in for the kill. Had that punch missed, it could've been a whole other story. That said, I still don't believe Kimbo's experience was worthy of him headlining events and being the main card every time. It makes the MMA world look like a joke when you've got CBS promoting Kimbo as the next big deal, then he gets knocked out quickly in a match that showed he still isn't ready for the primetime. I'm sure Kimbo has been enjoying the cash they've thrown at him, but I do give him respect not only for taking the Seth fight on short notice but also remaining sportsmanlike throughout the broadcast and his career, and not acting like a big willie when he started headlining for EliteXC. |

I watch MMA here and there when I can. I was surprised to see Kimbo get his ass handed to him. As Josh mentioned give Mr. Slice credit for being a good sport after the fight. I've seen a lot of sports writers writing off Kimbo's career after this loss. It'll be interesting to see if he can come back. |

I still believe Kimbo has potential. He is being trained by Bas Rutten after all, and you have to give him credit because I'm sure he's a far better fighter now than he was in those street videos. That said, Kimbo now needs to prove he's the real deal by fighting a few more times on an undercard and not just leaving the sport because he is no longer the big draw he once was. I'm sure he won't be getting paid as much for his next fight, but there's still plenty to do if he wants it. |

Josh, since you're a fan of MMA have you seen the film Never Back Down(2008)? It's kind of a "Karate Kid" style movie except with MMA prominently featured in the film. |

I've seen a couple previews for it, but not the actual film. It looked kinda cheesy to me, for some reason it reminded me of those dance and cheerleading movies that hollywood always pumps out. But I'm sure I'll watch it eventually. Have you seen it? |

The movie? No, but I have seen the final fight between the good guy and bully(who beat the good guy to a pulp in the early part of the film). As you said, there's some cheese and a lot of cliches. I will say this: the fight scenes looked very well choreographed and the final fight was action packed and looked realistic.

Here's a new article on Petruzelli and EliteXC, possibly shooting some holes in Elite's already shaky credibility: http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news?slug=dw-petruzelli100708&prov=yhoo&type=lgns |

Currently, I would say I'm impressed with Georges St. Pierre after seeing his last couple fights. He's an all around skilled fighter and extremely technical on the ground. All time, that's a tough one. I guess I've never really thought about it much. The Gracie family comes to mind, particularly Royce because he was one of the big innovators of the sport when UFC was young. |

There's been some rumbling, Josh, that Kimbo Slice may have been paid to throw his fight with Seth Petruzelli. I'm not buying it. Your thoughts on this? |

It would have made sense for Petruzelli to throw it, but not Slice. Kimbo was EliteXC's big moneymaker, now that he has been beat and the hype is over, less people are going to tune in next time. It just doesnt make sense from Elite's standpoint for Kimbo to lose. If you go back on youtube and watch the video again, you will see a guy in the audience jump up from his chair and start yelling and freaking out on the left side of the ring. That was Jared Shaw, one of the bigwigs for EliteXC, yelling at Kimbo to get up. He knew Kimbo losing was going to cost him. |

Josh, I watched ex WWE wrestler Brock Lesnar tonight in a match against some guy whose name I can't remember. Lesnar is developing into a very skilled MMA fighter. This guy could probably give a grizzly bear a run for its money.

Yeah, Brock is turning out to be a beast, he's living up to the hype despite the loss to Frank Mir early in his career. Since then he's looked impressive and has great strength and a decent ground game. I've been hearing rumors that Dana wants to set up a match with Lesnar facing Randy Couture. |

I checked UFC's site, they indeed have Randy Couture set to fight Lesnar on November 15th. Hopefully I'll make it to the bar or a friends house to catch that one. |
