I do not have to explain the films. They are so legendary already. Everyone has talked about them. But which one is better?

I hate to take preference with a newer film, but I think John Carpenter's The Thing is a masterpiece. The Thing from Another World is good, but I didn't think it as a masterpiece.

Neither is, IMO, "better" than the other. G2K, I believe it difficult, if not impossible, to fairly judge two films against each other that were produced thirty one years apart, The Thing From Another World in 1951 and The Thing in 1982. Howard Hawks and John Carpenter went about making their respective films, based on the story "Who Goes There?", with different philosophies. Carpenter himself has stated he wanted to make the monster completely different from the 1951 original.

John Carpenter also had access to film industry advances that Howard Hawks did not, including more advanced cameras, audio and video enhancement hardware and other on set logistical amenities that were unavailable to those making the 1951 version.

I just don't think it's fair to judge these two films against one another and I would, based on my statements, reject anyone's arguments that one film is better than the other. winky

That's a fair way of putting it pack. I agree. I tend to like a lot of different kinds of movies, and so I always hate having to choose which one is better than the other. Sometimes I end up making a choice anyway, but I really try to avoid ranking films or actors.

Packmule, I feel that your post speaks mostly to the SFX terms. But on the other hand you speak of each director making their own respecticve vision of the films. So for thoes who reside with Packmule I shall alter the question: which film did you find more enjoyable in a noncritical sense, reguardless of acting or SFX?

I see. While the special effects are part of what I was referring to they are not the only things I referred to. The acting style among actors was decidedly different back in the early 1950's than what it is today, particularly regarding horror films. In John Carpenter's film there was frequent profanity spoken by various members of the arctic research station, two scenes where marijuana was being smoked and of course the frequent sequences of gore. In the early 1950's, a movie with sequences of profane language, gore and scenes where an illegal drug was being consumed would have, in all likelihood, gotten Howard Hawks thrown out of Hollywood, and possibly into an insane asylum. It just wasn't done because the climate of horror movies back then is much different than it is now. The spoken dialog between the actors, like in other 50's sci-fi and horror films, was often crisp and very quick between the characters, the humor, where there was humor, more sarcastic and dry, and not at all raunchy like it is so much now in modern day horror movies. These differences, including my reference to the special effects, are why I believe trying to ascertain which of these films is "better" is an exercise in unfairness, to both films, and in futility. winky

Well, which one do you prefer then. Not which one is better. Which one you prefer.

The Thing(1982), albeit only slightly. I prefer the raunchier humor, profanity and quirky behavior of the characters in the John Carpenter film, as well as the gore effects.

I thought this thread was to state which movie one liked the best...? Assuming that's true then you could have replied immediately, Matthew, if you had wanted to. Right? heyo
