I hate to be the barer of bad news:

From David Colton at the Classic Horror Films Boards:

As you may have heard by now, Forry has battled pneumonmia this week,
never a good thing at his age. He is now home, and it appears to be a
day by day situation.

Here's a post by Terry Pace that accurately describes the current situation:

Anita and the kids and I spoke with Forry on the phone last night
(Halloween, of course) and customarily wished him the creepy
compliments of the sinister season.

The Ackermonster is indeed home from the hospital (his life, his
choice ... and one that we must respect) and bravely battling
pneumonia, but in spite of his weakened condition he was in good
spirits. He had been greeting a steady stream of trick-or-treaters
throughout the evening and had just finished watching Are You Smarter
Than a Fifth-Grader? on television when we called. (He made sure we
knew that he had passed the show with flying colors.)

Uncle Forry was delighted when I told him that our own Little
Monsters, his namesake Forrest (4) and baby sister Alexandra (3), had
just finished a robust round of trick-or-treating in full costume as
the Frankenstein Monster and his electrifying Bride. He was especially
amused when I told him that Alexandra had introduced the two of them
to fellow mini-revelers at a neighborhood Halloween party by saying,
"Hi! I'm the Bride of Frankenstein ... and this is my brother ...
Frankenstein!"

I will be calling the Mini-Mansion at least once a day, speaking to
Forry directly and Joe as well, and will report here as much as
necessary, whenever I can. A few select people are being encouraged to
visit in person (please understand that these numbers need to be
limited, as do calls to the house), but for now I would highly
recommend as many cards and letters as possible, and certainly as soon
as possible.

If this is indeed Forry's final bow, the Famous Monster will be
reminded (as he certainly knows already) of how much he is truly
admired and adored by so very, very many. If there is a chance
(however slim) that he can still rebound and recover, the depth and
degree of the response would certainly reinforce his will to live and
secure whatever strength he has to keep fighting.

Ron Adams has announced on the Bash Board that he has received word
from Joe Moe that FJA is close to the end. And now is the time to send
cards. Send to:

FORREST J ACKERMAN
4511 Russell Ave
Los Angeles CA 90027

Thanks for this update, August. I'm going to mail a card out tomorrow morning to Mr. Ackerman.

Hopefully other members here will do likewise.

I must admit that this name is new to me. But from reading about him, it looks like he's someone who's dedicated much of his life to monsters. That earns him some respect in my book. I wish him the best.

Here's more info on the life and contributions of Mr. Ackerman: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forrest_J_Ackerman

I remember as a kid buying issues of his magazine Famous Monsters Of Filmland. Back in the 70's, when there were no DVDs and only the occasional horror movie on TV, this was the magazine to get if you were a fan of horror and science fiction films.

Thanks for the link. I'll read up on him
Forrest J. Ackerman, affectionately referred to as "Forry" and "Uncle Forry" by many, many friends and acquaintances, is greatly respected and revered by those who grew up on the magazine Famous Monsters Of Filmland, and those who have worked with him over the years. As a fan of horror movies he will always have my gratitude and respect for his lifetime of contributions in promoting horror movies in cinema and TV, as well as his other work in promoting this genre of movies.

Uncle Forry is, what I call, the First Phan of fantasy/horror/sci-fi. He inspired so many kids, who grew up to become professional filmmakers and artists, including John Landis, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, Rick Baker and many others.

Here's a clip from the 1990 "Horror Hall of Fame" honoring Uncle Forry:

Here's a tour of Uncle's Forry's Ackermansion from 1986, where you can see a bit of the scope of his collection:

Word of Mr. Ackerman's failing health is spreading across the internet.

I mailed Mr. Ackerman a "get well" letter this AM. I'm going to mail him a card tomorrow AM.

The staff of Sci-Fi Japan have put together an excellent tribute to Mr. Forrest J. Ackerman, who is still currently battling pneumonia. To see this tribute click the link: http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/2008/11/14/forrest-j-ackerman-tributes/

I came upon this at Horror Movies.ca: a video in which (the late) Forrest J. "Forry" Ackerman says a final goodbye to all of his fans. To see it click the link: http://www.horror-movies.ca/horror_14620.html

I felt very sad watching this video. It's also a credit to Mr. Ackerman, who remained upbeat in this video, despite being very ill.

I greatly regret that I never had a chance to meet this man. I hope he received and read the letter and get well card I sent him before his passing.
