Fours years after The Return Of Godzilla Toho released it's next G film, Godzilla Vs Biollante(1989). I like this movie. Thumbs up: 1. the Godzilla design-G looks massive, powerful, and has a 'juggernaut" quality 2. Super X2 design-looks good and the scenes of SuperX2 Vs Godzilla very well done IMO 3. Colonel Gondo, a tough, wisecracking guy who, looking death in the face(Godzilla) from the office building, still manages: "Stick to smoking, that intravenous stuff'll kill you" tongue-1 4. The Saradian agent, IMO a poor dresser crazy and a real nuisance, who also has an unusually nonchalant attitude about Godzilla Thumbs down:1. the telepathy "angle" with Miki Saegusa(though no disrespect to Megumi Odaka herself) 2. Biollante's first form-a massive rose vs G? Post your thoughts and opinions on this film here. All replies welcome.

Kicked major arse. Easily the best of the Heisei series and one of the best G films ever. Bio gets major credit for being a plant. :P

I've heard a lot of negative feelings for this film in the past, but I've always kind of enjoyed it. I picked up a used VHS several year back and wore the darn thing out, now all I can hope for is a DVD release!

Personally, for the Godzilla series to that point, It was quite an interesting story line and change. It was actually a bit disturbing to some young G fans I know. (I'm sure they will recognize who I'm talking about when they visit)...

BIOLLANTE is actually one of those Godzilla films (much like GODZILLA VS THE SEA MONSTER) that is actually gaining more fans as time goes by. I think it holds up better than most of the Heisei films.

I just love the emotionalism that this movie displays. It is such a unique kaiju movie, and one of the best in my opinion.

The story line for this movie was actually the result of a fan submission. The submission was part of a promotion. Not sure how many actual story submissions there were in this contest. I sure wish Toho would do something like this again, and include us western fans in the promo. :)

Wasn't the amateur writer a dentist? I think I read that in Steve Ryfle's book.

Funny, I have read numerous excerpts of usermembers on various boards who have written Toho(presumably their L.A. office...?) to offer ideas, suggestions, criticisms, even praise. I wrote one several years ago. Of course there was no reply. In a way I can understand why they do not answer-they probably get lots of these letters. I just wish they would cut with "tradition" just once and answer back, to somebody. I might write them another letter my damn self. It may not get an answer, but it would at least afford me some practice at my penmanship tongue-1 -anyone else around here ever fire off a letter to Toho? ---------------Topic: Ironic that Godzilla Vs Biollante is the only G film I do not have on DVD(I have the old letterboxed Miramax VHS). I do think, as has been mentioned already, that time has been kind to this film. Not my favorite Heisei G movie but close. :)

I wore out my VHS of this some time ago and a friend is searching for an official DVD release of this film for me. I haven't had any luck finding an official DVD release, I'm curious, did this film receive a LD release? I know some fans of classic sci-fi/horror have told me that many classics were released to LD and many times offered better bonus features and such than the later DVD releases. I was wondering if any of the Godzilla films were released to LD and if so, how they compare to the current DVD releases and if Godzilla vs Biollante was a LD release. I very much want to get this film back in my collection and I am region-free, if there's a DVD out there, although, I would need English subs, as I'm unable to understand Japanese. freak out

The only official DVD release of Godzilla Vs Biollante that I know of is the Region 2 Toho DVD which can be purchased at Yesasia.com or CDJapan. It is not English subtitled. There is a site where you can download DVD and DVD-R eng subtitles: Tokyomonsters-I am not very tech savvy when it comes to "burning" Eng subs for these discs so I cannot help you with that. The site(forum) boss at this site is Jim Ballard. You might have to register at his forum but it has a very good "technical" forum on his board. I can PM with 2-3 sites that I know sell this title as a DVD-R in widescreen format. Let me know if I can be of any more help. :)

Thanks, packmule. I'm probably the least tech savy person I know, so burning subtitles may be something totally out of my range, although perhaps I could figure it out, eventually. Feel free to PM me with any info on obtaining the title, packmule, I'd greatly appreciate it. :)

Once Classic Media has issued it's Box set in September then Godzilla Vs Biollante(1989) will, I believe, be one of only three(3) Godzilla films still not officially released on Region 1 DVD. The other two: Godzilla Vs Megalon(1973) and The Return Of Godzilla(1984)

Note: I am not including any of the bargain-bin versions of Godzilla Vs Megalon, e.g. from Alpha Video-these DVDs are atrocious, with severely reduced run-times and dubbing that have rendered this film almost unwatchable, and little more than an hour-long, television-like feature. thumbs down

I'd LOVE to see a widescreen, Japanese-language version of BIOLLANTE on DVD. What's the hold up? I know it has something to do with HBO/Miramax, but how? I thought Toho got the international rights to all the G-flicks back.
