Our new President, Barack Obama, declared during his campaign that "America is hungry for a new kind of politics". In that statement I agree. My problem: many of Obama's cabinet nominations, especially that of Tom Daschle to the post of Secretary of Health And Human Services. Daschle, it has been revealed, waited a month before informing president Obama he had failed to pay considerable back taxes for a driver and limo he was provided by a wealthy investor friend. Other details of Daschle's background, and source of his wealth, have also been revealed. Daschle had made a lot of money in speaking fees and "consultations" with pharmaceutical companies and other companies with a vested interest in Washington(DC) congressional affairs. Looks to me like Obama's nomination of Daschle is "old politics". winky

Tom Daschle is just another political fat cat being taken care of by his pal and fellow Dem Barack Obama.

In the end, whether Obama serves a a single term of four years or two terms totaling eight years, one thing will remain the same: Washington politics and the general decline of the United States Of America.

For those of you who still hold on to the notion that this country can and will rebound consider this: it was revealed this AM(on Yahoo) that the Associated Press has discovered thousands of visa applications from banks and other lending institutions, many of these holding their hands out for U.S. taxpayer funded bailout money, that were submitted for approval to the U.S. government, many of these positions paying up to $90,000 a year in salary, and all presumably to be filled by foreign workers. Foreign workers who would be paid less than their American counterparts. This while thousands of Americans have lost their jobs and cannot find new ones. The link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090201/ap_on_bi_ge/bailout_foreign_workers
Nono

Corporate greed, the banking industry and Washington(DC) politics is currently bringing about the total ruination of the United States Of America.

I agree with that. One man isn't going to change the way Washington works. And Obama is still a politician himself. I always liked President David Palmer on 24 because the man was relentless and unwavering when it came to standing up for his principles. But sadly, people like that don't get that far in politics in the real world.

Looks like, and just as I expected, the Democratic economic stimulus plan is going to bog down with GOP(Republican) resistance: http://www.cbsatlanta.com/money/18616516/detail.html#-

While the Dems and the Republicans argue over which one knows what's best for America's ailing economy more Americans will lose their homes and/or lose their jobs.

Here's more details on the tax cuts that will be part of the massive economic stimulus bill: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090212/ap_on_go_co/stimulus_taxes

More than anything, this bill resembles, IMO an enormous handout, as opposed to something that will actually stimulate job creation.

As for me, a single working person with no dependents making under $75,000 a year, my weekly paycheck will increase by around $13. What would that extra $13 a week do for me: would it help me afford a larger upgrade to my 32" LCD HD TV? No. Would this extra $13 help me afford a better and more comprehensive medical insurance plan? No. The extra $13 would enable me to buy an extra meal or two at McDonalds every week, or some other fast food restaurant serving artery clogging garbage on their menu. The $13 wouldn't go very far in a grocery store, you can be sure of that.

Thank you, President Obama, for that extra $13 a week I'll be getting starting in June. I can continue to pay on my bare bones medical plan and still enjoy the luxury of an extra trip to McDonalds or Burger King every week. winky

In four years, perhaps eight if Barack Obama is re-elected, I believe the vast majority of American people will look upon Obama with the same disdain and disgust as they did(me included) George W. Bush.

What I've heard is that this might create a lot of new construction jobs, but anyone not qualified for that work is out of luck. The job market is really thin at the moment. I was hoping some better opportunities would open up.

Joy Behar, filling in for Larry King, interviews columnist/author Ann Coulter, who is Republican, their exchanges sometimes lively: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2009/02/20/lkl.coulter.long.cnn

I concur with Ann Coulter's assessment of the Democrat's stimulus plan: it's a disaster and a giant handout, which will benefit banks, the "big three automakers" and other various lending institutions inside and outside the mortgage banking industry. The plan will not help ordinary working class people and the "middle income" workers, who will end up with little or nothing.

On a lighter note I've always thought Ann Coulter is a hottie! tongue-1

I have maintained, from the outset, that the Democrat's economic stimulus bill will aid the big three automakers, various mortgage lending institutions and banks. The working class will be left with little or no aid.

Here's a good example of one bank, Northern Trust(in Chicago, IL), well taken care of by the government, which has received $1.6 billion in aid from "Uncle Sam"(taxpayer $), the institution responding to this aid by throwing parties and receptions for its employees and clientele, and paying for fancy hotel stays for its employees while they attend these functions. I saw a story on this on the news, and also that musician Sheryl Crow had been booked to perform for one of these "parties". I guess Sheryl doesn't let any morals stand in the way of getting ahold of her next paycheck. But with the economy the way it is now, I guess you can't blame her.

August 31, 2010 has been set by President Obama as the target date by which to have the vast majority of U.S. armed forces out of Iraq: http://my.att.net/s/editorial.dll?bfromind=7508&eeid=6416019&_sitecat=1504&dcatid=0&eetype=article&render=y&ac=-2&ck=&ch=ne

Prediction: after our forces leave Iraq will come under renewed attacks by Al-Queda and other Taliban forces, this country eventually becoming controlled by the Taliban again. winky

Here's the Republican response to President Obama's latest speech regarding the economic crisis, delivered by Lousiana governor Bobby Jindal:

Watching Jindal talk and his overall voice inflections, I'm inclined to think he'd be better suited narrating some children's educational video. He reminds me of (the late)Fred Rogers when speaking on the TV show Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

"Prediction"? One hardly needs precognitive abilities to state the blindingly obvious.

Yes, the Al-Qaeda are hilariously likely to run into the disorganized Iraq the minute the Americans leave, but honestly; with the way things are going, you just don't have the time or resources to pay attention to that now. If America wants to keep its reputation as one of the world's leading economies, they are going to have to distribute the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act's resources correctly, which, admittedly, Obama's government seems to be misplacing so far. Much of the rest of the world is getting quite irritated with this situation, as it's going out on all of us. Besides, you'll be leaving Iraq sooner or later anyway, and Al-Qaeda is not at all likely to be utterly destroyed by then.

However, though he has made a rather peculiar start, I won't judge Obama until at least halfway through his term.

"Blindingly obvious?" Perhaps to you, a person of advanced intellect and God like intelligence and power, it is. To others who remain grounded in average to slightly above average intelligence and are not as informed about the world military-political "arena", it probably isn't. topper tongue-1
