The metropolitan Atlanta area population is now over 5.5 million people. By "metropolitan" I mean the downtown Atlanta area and everything around the city inside I-285, a mega-sized freeway that encircles the city of Atlanta. This area inside I-285, this freeway also referred to as "the perimeter", is obviously much larger than simply the downtown Atlanta area, whose population has remained surprisingly static at about 500,000-600,000 people. Assuming this article refers to the downtown Atlanta area as being empty, I'm not surprised at all at Atlanta's ranking: the economic downturn has adversely affected both the residential and commercial real estate market(s). The rents for downtown office space are often very high and that has no doubt driven some businesses out of the downtown area. Downtown Atlanta has long been a haven for petty crime and panhandlers(homeless people who aggressively ask for handouts), both of which have caused the city some bad publicity, especially during the '96 Olympics. Personally Evan, I believe the city of Atlanta, GA is going to hell in a hand basket.

A lot of small(er) cities in Georgia are, including Athens, GA where both my boss and his father(the owner of the company I work for) attended The University Of Georgia. I can remember, some thirty years ago, when traveling to areas north of Atlanta like Dunwoody, Alpharetta and Marietta were considered "trips out into the country". Now, all of these cities that are north of Atlanta are also choked with traffic, urban sprawl and a great deal of commercial real estate development. |

Detroit has been hit unbelievably hard, to the point that whole neighborhood subdivisions are foreclosed and houses are being sold for under 10 grand a pop. I actually briefly considering going there, then realized that not only would it be extremely difficult to find work there but the cold winters wouldn't feel too great on my body, which is by now totally attuned to the 100 plus temps that average most of Texas. |

I know our member "Dan"(Ro-Dan) lives in Michigan so I'm sure he can personally attest to what you're saying, Josh. I would think the struggles of "The Big Three" automakers have had a miserable effect om Michigan's economy overall. |
