EPISODE XVI: TUNNEL SYSTEM July 25th, 2044 Kiruna, north Sweden And so passed another peaceful day in Kiruna… or perhaps not. From the mountain burst a giant monster, breaking the peaceful silence. It was brown, with rock-like skin and a yellow beak. On its head was a yellow horn, and it sported a long, big tail. It stood on two legs, had a pair of almost humanlike arms, and roared a high-pitched sound. Its name was Burtannus. C.A.T was already on their way, the entire jet squadron ready to fight the monster. “C.A.T unit, scatter!” Casper shouted. Only a second after, Burtannus turned around, charged her horn with energy, and finally fired a stream of lightning from it. The C.A.T jets scattered just in time, and Peter and Taiki followed up directly with a stream of beams fired upon the monster’s back. Burtannus roared again and continued firing her lightning beam. “Pretty slow for electricity”, Tanja said, and happily fired a missile on Burtannus. The missile hit her side, and the monster stepped around, roaring painfully. It did not appear wounded, however. “Moving in for attack”, Johan informed, but just as he flew towards the monster, Burtannus suddenly dug herself extremely quickly into the ground, disappearing entirely. “What…?” Peter gasped. “It’s gone!” “Let’s circle the area for a while”, Casper said. “If it doesn’t come up, we’ll simply have to fly back.” Said and done, the C.A.T team soon returned, unable to find the monster again. As they left, Burtannus continued her journey underground. July 26th, 2044 C.A.T HQ, Stefansborg “Recap”, Captain Emelie sighed. “We found a monster, we intercepted it and we lost it. The monster just burrowed into the ground.” “That’s right”, Taiki nodded. “It’s definitely not uncommon to find rapidly burrowing monsters. Japan has dealt with scores of them.” “Do you recognize this particular one?” Johan asked Taiki. “Not really, no…” “I do”, Emelie said. “I went through all files I could, and the profile matches Burtannus, a monster that appeared in Kyoto during the nineties.” As she talked, a picture and information about Burtannus streamed up on the big screen in the meeting room. “Not much is said about it”, she continued. “Burtannus fought one of the Japanese teams, D.A.S.H, and retreated into the sea. It appears to have moved here.” “It seems to do hit-and-run attacks”, Casper noted. “We’ve got to be ready for anything. Monitor the area around Kiruna.” The other team members nodded, and so did Emelie. Later, Peter was by himself in a corner of the recreational room. Pole, he said to his alien guest, how come you aren’t worried about what happened last week? It gave me the power to defeat Necrona, Pole replied. That’s all that matters to me. You shouldn’t be so worried… lots of Ultrans have gained similar transformations. Recently we had Ultraman Mebius. He transformed so much I’m surprised they have a decent document picture in Japan. But this can’t be like that. When you transformed, I felt as if I was getting pulled out of your body… and I kept sensing this feeling of hatred. You don’t suppose that might be connected to the fact that Necrona Seijin was, and is, the most disgusting fiend we’ve faced so far? That’s not what worries me. I’m worried because the hatred wasn’t yours… “What’s the business, Captain Charming?” he suddenly heard Tanja’s voice distracting him. “Uh… I… well…” he mumbled. “Yes?” she smiled. “Nothing… I was just thinking”, he said. “Oh well, penny for your thoughts.” “This Burtannus thing”, he lied. “I don’t like sitting and waiting like this.” “Well, I bet it’s more fun if you have something to look forward to!” Tanja kept smiling. “Like what?” Peter muttered. “I’ve got something”, Tanja said and held up something. Concert tickets. “You’re asking me to a concert?” the confused Peter said. “My brother bought them, but his girlfriend turned out to be cheating”, Tanja explained. “He gave them to me, but I don’t have anyone to go with. They’re for the Pencilheads concert this weekend… want to join me?” “Er… I actually don’t like the Pencilheads that much…” Peter said, but upon seeing Tanja’s hypnotic, slightly blushing puppy-dog eyes, he added “…but of course I’ll join you.” Just as Tanja began smiling at her success, the warning signal went off, and Johan appeared around the corner. “Burtannus came out again!” Umeå, north Sweden Burtannus roared loudly and climbed out of her dug hole. Gazing upon the houses around her, she saw blinking warning lights guiding the people away. The lights irritated her, and she fired her horn’s lightning bolt upon the first building housing them, destroying it. Then she destroyed the second, and then the third… That’s when C.A.T arrived, firing a volley of beams upon her back. Burtannus roared in anger and fired lightning bolts at the offenders to no use. They were too fast. “This monster’s real stubborn!” Casper grinned. “Try the Specium Missile!” Taiki nodded and fired more lightning bolts, catching the monster’s attention. As Burtannus fired her inaccurate beam, Johan fired a blue, glowing missile at the monster’s side. The missile exploded on impact, knocking Burtannus over and rolling, but she soon regained her footing and began digging again. “It’s getting away!” Tanja exclaimed. “Oh no, you don’t!” Peter shouted and fired a regular missile at the monster, but she barely reacted and soon reached hiding underground once more. July 28th, 2044 C.A.T HQ, Stefansborg Johan was taking a walk outside. This was nothing he did with great enthusiasm, as he couldn’t really go anywhere else than inside the walls of the HQ. C.A.T was on constant alert, and so was the army. Aware now, that they were unable to stop the monsters themselves, the Swedish forces spent their resources in this crisis to track the beast. At present, it was digging underground near Luleå, proving how fast it was, having apparently begun to zigzag up and down the massive distances making up northern Sweden. He sighed, and looked up in the sky. “Will Ultraman fix this for us too?” he mumbled. He sat down on the ground and began watching some ants. Damn it, he thought, now they needed to get rid of bugs too. As he watched the insects, however, he got an idea. “Explain that again”, Emelie said. “Well, I was watching ants earlier”, Johan said enthusiastically. “And I realized that ants don’t appear in the winter because it’s too cold. They need to dig their way to their nests… so I thought we could try that with Burtannus. If we use the freeze beams we used against Kradon on the ground, we might even make it solid enough to stop Burtannus from escaping!” “Interesting plan”, Emelie nodded. “It’s worth a shot. Get ready to move out at any time.” The entire team nodded and rushed to re-outfit their aircraft’s custom weaponry. Later, Peter sat by himself once again in his corner of the recreational room. Hey, Pole, he told Ultraman Pole, if we fight Burtannus as Ultraman, will you still be purple like that? No, the energy’s gone, Pole replied. I think it only comes when needed… or if I grow enraged. It’s no good to give in to something like that, Peter noted. Ever seen Star Wars? Seen what? Forget it. My point is, strength may not be the only effect of it. “Sitting here alone again?” he suddenly heard Taiki say. “That’s funny, you don’t really look like the loner type.” “Your eyes can deceive you”, Peter quoted, “don’t trust them.” “Nice. Star Wars, isn’t it? Listen, Burtannus emerged from the ground in the middle of nowhere. It’s our best chance at fighting it without doing any damage to property. Get ready.” Nowhere, or more precisely in the middle of it Burtannus roared and began walking around the little valley. Not aware of any enemies this time, she walked around peacefully and chewed on the trees. Roaring irritadedly at the sunlight, she took her aggressions out by firing her thunder beam on the ground for a while. That’s when C.A.T arrived, the five jets ready for battle. Burtannus noticed them and immediately fired her beam against the opposing force. “Scatter!” Casper shouted, and everyone obeyed. Taiki and Tanja fired a volley of beams against Burtannus’ shoulders, distracting her long enough for them to pass by unharmed. The others flew to suitable positions on the first side. “Activate freeze beam!” Casper commanded. “Target is the ground!” the team dove down, ready to fire the freeze beams… “WAIT!” Peter screamed. “There are non-combatants on the ground!” And very truly, a family of campers looked in horror upon the battle. “D-damn… what do we do now?” Tanja said. Suddenly, Taiki dove down towards the family. “Get ready to fire the beams”, he said, and fired off a beam at the family. It was the shield beam used against Fukumono! A spherical barrier encased the campers, shielding them. Almost directly after the C.A.T team fired their freeze weapons, in the humorous irony it is. Blue beams impacted the ground, which began to turn blue as well. Burtannus stepped around irritadedly, her feet stepping on the biting cold ground, and C.A.T began emptying their weapons on her. The dinosaur was engulfed in explosions, and tried to dig herself away, but the ground was too solid. She fired around wildly with her electric beam and hit both Tanja and Peter. The two jets circled down and landed calmly. Suddenly, Burtannus turned to the family of campers. The shield had vanished by now, and she charged up for another electric beam, fired, and… Ultraman Pole suddenly got in between, blocking the attack. He then rose and assumed a battle stance, ready to fight Burtannus. “It’s Ultraman!” Johan cheered. “Let’s leave the battle to him!” “This is going to be tough”, Casper said. “It’s more powerful than many other monsters.” “Wow”, Taiki said in awe. “It’s the first time I get to see this Ultran…” Burtannus let out a raging roar at her new foe and charged. Pole grabbed her shoulders and kneed her chest, then tossed her to the side. Burtannus regained her footing quickly and swung her big tail at Pole, hitting his head and sending him rolling. As soon as he got up, she charged again, but he kicked her face, karate-chopped her neck and uppercut her jaw. He then did a backflip and placed himself in a ready position. Burtannus fired her electric beam, but Pole jumped to the side. He then held out his fists and fired a beam from his knuckles; it was his version of Ultraseven’s Knuckle Beam. The beam hit Burtannus in the stomach, sending her backing. Burtannus was far from defeated. She charged with surprising speed and rammed Pole, head first, hitting his Color Timer. A small mark was left, and Pole flew backwards, screaming in pain. The Color Timer was his weak spot. Not only that, it had started to blink now. Burtannus started slamming her tail down on the Ultran repeatedly, but he managed to roll away and regain footing. When Burtannus charged, Pole encased his fist in energy and punched her face. The powerful attack toppled the monster, but she got up once more. Pole followed up with his Polium Rain, shooting a stream of blasts from his color timer. Burtannus stepped around trying futilely to avoid the beams, and charged her horn again, turning to Pole. Pole threw a slashing blade from his hand, cutting the horn clean off. The energy flowed back into Burtannus, effectively shocking the monster herself. Pole then held his hands forward with his palms together, like a spear, then formed an X with his arms and fired his Polium Ray. Burtannus was hit head-on, but proved very resistant to the attack. Pole continued, and after a moment the monster violently exploded. Burtannus’ reign of fear in Sweden was at an end! July 31st, 2044 Pencilheads Concert, Somewhere in Stefansborg As the audience cheered, and as the band played its loud, radical music, Peter and Tanja stood by the side. “Come on”, Peter smiled. “You know I don’t like this kind of music. What’s the real reason you had to drag me here?” “I just like you”, Tanja smiled, blushing a bit. “You know that, don’t you?” “Of course I do”, Peter nodded. “You’ve liked me since we first met.” “But…” she replied, “Why didn’t you ever say anything?” “Why would I say anything?” Peter wondered. “Don’t you get it?” Tanja said, her smile fading a bit. “We could have been something. Something good.” “That’s not a good idea, Tanja”, Peter muttered. “Be professional. We’re a team. We can’t afford hindering the work with something like that.” Tanja stared at him for a long time. Peter looked back, and noticed the girl getting a bit tear-eyed. “Go away”, she muttered and turned around. Peter said something in response, but it drowned in the sound of the band. EPISODE XVII: SPACE HORROR RETURNS August 3rd, 2044 Peter’s Home, Stefansborg That wasn’t smooth, Pole said. So you’ve been saying for the past few days, Peter replied sharply. And if you haven’t noticed, I still think I was right. Had we been in different occupations, I’d be all over Tanja, but a relationship would result in poor judgment in battle. Still wasn’t smooth. In combat school, I used to have this nice romance with one of the young Ultrawomen. What, you have women too? Of course. Earth doesn’t see much of them because most stay back in M78, but many join Ultra Mother as healers all over the universe. I see. Well, we’ve got a day off… how should we waste it? We could always take a swing out in space. Yeah, that’s a plan. Let’s go! Some miles away from Earth’s atmosphere Pole flew right out of the Earth’s sky into space, stylishly spinning around happy to move freely. But do tell me, how’d it end up with that girl? It’s pretty hard to imagine Ultrans doing… normal stuff… Oh, Beth? It ended kind of badly. She entered this team dedicated to collecting stray space monsters. I ended up, as you know, as a Protector. I defend planets. Heh, how ironic. I stop a relationship because we share the job, you stop it because your job differs. I must fail to detect the comedy in that, Pole muttered as he flew past the moon and continued into space. C.A.T HQ, Stefansborg Emelie sighed. Sometimes she wondered why she put up with her job. She was the one forced to deal with the press, the pressure, the criticism and the boring, boring paperwork. As she flipped away another paper, she considered for the third time today to just burn the rest of it, resign and spend her time on something more interesting, like bird watching. But if she’d start bird watching, who would do the monster watching? “Captain!” she heard Tanja say, and sighed. Evidently, Tanja had been doing that annoying monster watching thing too. “What is it?” she asked as Tanja entered the room. “Some kind of comet suddenly appeared. It’s headed straight for us!” Tanja held out a paper showing a picture of the threat. “That’s an awfully fast comet, there”, Emelie mumbled. “Such a coincidence it’s going to hit Earth, of all places… after more than one Flamosaurus also hit us.” “So you think it’s a monster?” Tanja asked. Emelie nodded. “I’ll call up the government. We’ll be forced to use the Cat Lash.” The Cat Lash was a satellite placed over Stefansborg, able to fire a powerful beam of ionized particles, called quite predictably an Ion Cannon. “Don’t you think that’s a bit too much?” Tanja gulped. “No”, her captain replied. “It’s just the firepower we need. Now shoo!” Space, in the vicinity of Mars Pole continued to fly rather aimlessly through space, oblivious to the new threat looming over Sweden. Come on, do another loop, Peter said happily. Pole obliged, doing the loop, and then saw a small space rock. Holding his hands to his sides, he set up for his Polium Rain attack, but fired only one energy bolt, blowing the little stone up. The other Ultrans never seem to do this kind of thing. I can’t imagine why, it’s really relaxing. They don’t? No, they’re so deadly serious it’s boring… hey, what’s that? A glowing, flaming object sped past him suddenly. Pole decided to take pursuit and flew after the object. It’s flying towards Earth! Don’t let it get there! Quiet, let me concentrate! He increased his speed, beginning to gain on the object… …suddenly a bright blue beam hit the blazing object, knocking it from its path and sending it spinning down onto the moon, impacting in some kind of green explosion. C.A.T HQ, Stefansborg “Target hit”, Casper smiled. “I’m such a great marksman.” “Is the target DESTROYED?” clarified Emelie. “It spun down on the moon. It’s not visible.” “So find it!” Emelie boomed. “I have another of my suspicions, and I’m usually right.” “All right, all right”, Casper said and started a scan. Moon Surface Pole landed on the surface and looked around. The object, whatever it was, had apparently been swatted out on the ground, covering it in some kind of green slime. It was rather confusing, but apparently the threat was gone. That’s when the unbelievable happened. The slime began to move to become a mass in the center. Pole, surprised, jumped away from the field and landed on a cliff nearby. Soon, the mass assumed a form, and started to shift in color and substance. Pole watched as a new monster formed in front of him! The creature had two big, fleshy legs, but above that was a rocklike body, shaped vaguely like the head of a tyrannosaur. Two small antennae on its “nose” served as eyes. The giant mouth that made a very large part of its body opened up, revealing a big, toothy black hole, and roared a loud, intense roar. Peginera… Pole muttered. You know what it is? Peter asked. It’s Peginera. A space monster Ultraseven once encountered. Rather dangerous. Then we have to defeat it here, don’t we? That’s the plan! But just as he said so, Peginera roared again and jumped up quickly, flying out towards deep space and turning to Earth. Pole reacted directly, firing some bolts of his Polium Rain upon the beast. The attack connected, and Peginera fell down to the moon’s surface again. The monster arose, angered, and turned to its foe. As Pole struck a battle pose, Peginera charged forward, ramming Pole. He held out his forearms, managing to deflect the blow, but Peginera suddenly split its bottom jaw into two, and grabbed Pole with these new “arms”, tossing him away. Pole rolled for a while before getting up and unleashing his Polium Rain on Peginera again, hitting the monster again and again with explosive energy beams. This did not finish it, though, and Peginera suddenly fired a series of green energy blasts from its mouth, forcing Pole to cross his arms over his chest, emitting the Soul Shield, a force field protecting him from the blasts. As he prepared to attack again, Peginera made a fast jump and flew off towards Earth. Pole was fast to follow, but the monster was simply too fast for him. C.A.T HQ, Stefansborg “Captain”, Johan said, “The object has appeared. It’s on its way here again!” “Identify”, Emelie boomed. A blurred picture of Peginera came on screen. “Monster has been identified as Peginera”, Taiki informed, “First encountered by DEUS twenty years ago.” “Well, fire again!” Emelie yelled. “Destroy it before it enters the atmosphere!” “Can’t, Captain”, Casper said nervously. “Why?” Emelie said impatiently. “Ultraman’s right behind it…” “Damn”, Emelie swore. “As much as I like Ultraman, this is just impractical.” “Captain”, Tanja said, “It’s headed right for Stefansborg!” “All right, we’ll try to help Ultraman instead. Ready one of the Capsule monsters. We’ll try to lead it from the civilized areas.” Just beneath atmosphere, above Stefansborg Peginera roared as it entered atmosphere, with Pole close behind. As he came closer, the monster released a lump of slime at him. He avoided it, but that cost him precious time. Then suddenly, another monster entered the fray. It looked like a giant pteranodon, and attempted to slam into Peginera. It missed, but tried again and again, once more with unsuccessful results. It then charged once more towards its foe, but this time fired a gray, tornado-like blast at it. The attack connected, and Peginera was sent spinning down to Earth uncontrollably. Surface next to Stefansborg “Fuumono succeeded!” Tanja cheered. “Peginera’s crashing down around here”, Casper said. “We better be ready to fight.” Soon, Peginera was seen spinning downwards before landing in a big, big crash, sending a cloud of dirt and dust flying over the landscape. Pole landed soon after, followed by Fuumono. The Ultran and the capsule monster seemed to nod in gratitude to each other, when suddenly the dust cleared. Peginera had once again been reduced to a green mass of slime, but like before, it reformed into its true form once more. That thing’s unkillable! Pole moaned. What do we do now? Peginera stepped forward, angered and ready to attack, when Fuumono started to flap his wings intensely, generating a windstorm. Very soon, Peginera was knocked off his feet, and C.A.T took the opportunity to fire their weaponry upon the monster. The effort was in vain, as Peginera rose again, completely unharmed. To top it all, the capsule monster vanished in a field of sparks, its energy depleted. “What do we do now?” Taiki said. “Peginera’s impossible to kill!” Peginera closed in on Pole, whose color timer was blinking. The monster waved its split bottom jaw’s arm-like parts and roared triumphantly. Pole kicked Peginera’s nose, then grabbed it and tossed it to the side. The monster rose and fired a big lump of slime at Pole, who was hit by it. The slime held him in place, unable to move, and Peginera began slamming him repeatedly. C.A.T fired a new weapon at Pole, a heat wave that melted the slime away. Pole arose, just as Peginera rammed into him, downing the Ultran. Suddenly, Peginera was hit by something from the sky. As everyone looked, they saw another monster land near Peginera. It was Bogara, the Monster Princess! “Bogara…?” Pole said. “You fiend! You swore to leave Earth alone!” Bogara did not respond. Peginera turned its attention on this new foe and charged. Bogara skillfully dodged the attack and punched her foe away, but Peginera made a U-turn and charged again. Bogara hit it with a spinning kick, downing Peginera. Pole stood amazed, as Bogara had not displayed such fighting skills when she battled him and Iron. Bogara let the small, wing-like openings on her back grow out with her arms, forming a gigantic, toothy mouth like she had done on Mars. She then rushed at Peginera, who was too startled to avoid her, and enveloped it in the “wings”. Pole watched as Peginera seemed to shrink down inside, emitting painful screams, until there was simply nothing there. The “wings” reformed to their original state again, and Bogara turned to Pole. Pole took a battle stance, tiredly trying to catch his breath, but she just looked at him and vanished. As Peter later began his walk home, having transformed back at the site of battle, he soon saw someone watching him up ahead. As he looked, he recognized Bogara’s human self, dressed in her usual white outfit. However, she looked as if she was a few years older, now looking like around 20 years old. She actually looked a bit cute. “You… what are YOU doing here?” he yelled. She just approached him, calmly smiling, prompting Peter to take a few steps back until he accidentally bumped into a light post. Bogara then reached him, and promptly embraced and kissed him. “Uh… what?” he managed to say when she finally released him. Bogara kept smiling, before she finally gave her reply. “I love you.” |

EPISODE XVIII: THE LOVE OF THE MONSTER PRINCESS August 3rd, 2044 Somewhere in Stefansborg “I love you.” Peter stood paralyzed at the girl’s words. Here he was, confronting his once-greatest enemy, and that’s what she said. He sincerely hoped the previous Ultrans never experienced something so awkward. “What?” he said, just as before. “Didn’t you hear?” Bogara said, calmly smiling. “Allow me to repeat: I love you.” “Uh… so I heard.” “I apologize. I was under the impression that the expression ‘what’ would be used when one did not understand.” “Wait wait wait”, Peter said. “I don’t understand anything here. Why’re you back?” “For you!” Bogara smiled. “Why…?” “You’re perfect for me. Powerful Ultran and pretty sweet...” “This is so very much not the behavior you had last time”, Peter said nervously. “I matured”, Bogara said. “Grew, way faster than you do… gained more emotions. Besides, I picked up some TV broadcasts on my way here. Studied culture. Who’s Frank Sinatra, by the way?” “He’s… er… wait, you came here for me?” “Yes”, Bogara nodded. “You. Both of you. You and Ultraman Pole. You’re… perfect!” She then attempted to hug him, but he stepped back. “You really should leave”, he finally said. “You’re classified as an Invader. You’re not allowed here.” “Sod the rules”, Bogara said. “Let’s not let them stop us!” “Us?” Peter objected. “Who said I want to be with you?” “I, er…” she said, her smile fading. “I… just hoped…” “Go hope somewhere else”, Peter muttered. “You’re not welcome here.” “But… I’m sorry about last time!” Bogara said, smiling again. “Oh, that makes ALL the difference”, Peter angrily snapped. “Really?” said the happy Bogara. “No. I was being ironic.” “Oh”, Bogara said and took out a notebook, scrabbling down the word with what appeared to be her own nail, leaving an ink-like substance which she wrote with. Peter tried not to seem surprised. “Look”, Peter said, “we gave you a chance. You really should take it. Go away from Earth. Besides, you and I would make a very weird pair, and I really already have enough woman problems as it is.” “But I love you…” Bogara said sadly. “That doesn’t make me jump on you and animalistically mate”, Peter replied, “otherwise I would be rather busy doing that right now. Go play your little love story somewhere else.” Bogara stood silent. “I thought you were the only one who didn’t hate me”, she said, getting tear-eyed. Peter got surprised, as the Bogara he remembered was a cold, unfeeling animal. “But you do”, Bogara said, wiping her tears off. “They all do. I’m nothing but a monster to them… and I wanted just one nice boyfriend in my life.” “Uh…” Peter began, “and you can’t go on a date with one of your Flamosauruses or Bemulars?” “They are animals, my dear”, she said with a faint smile. “But who knows? Maybe that studdy Mephilas Seijin is free this weekend.” She finally gave Peter a little wave with her hand, and vanished into thin air. Peter stood still for a moment. Pole, he thought, I’m having another of those monster-sympathy moments. Did you see that backside? Pole replied excitedly. POLE!!! Peter angrily said. Did you fall for her now? Well, I can’t say she’s worth hating… You’re right. Peculiar girl, that. I don’t mind her help, though. They would probably have kept on the conversation, but a loud crash broke the peace. As Peter looked up, almost immediately did the Monster Signal sound, and he could see why. The being, as tall as Ultraman, was gray in color, and its skin was armorlike. It was quite muscular, but what was so special about this creature was its head. It reminded of that of a hammerhead shark, with the eyes far out on horn-like protrusions to the sides. “People of Earth!” the alien man proclaimed loudly. “I am Voda Seijin. I am the champion of my entire race. Our planet was destroyed twenty years ago in a massive interplanetary war. As we have no home planet anymore, we shall take settlement on yours. Our initial attempt at paving the way, Peginera, was disposed of by your C.A.T and Ultraman. I now call for Ultraman to come out, so that we can settle this like warriors. Should he not, I will gladly massacre every single being in this city first!” Peter, do it, Pole said. Peter nodded, and held his left arm up. Putting his right hand on the Ultra Bracelet, it began to shine up blue, and Peter transformed into the giant hero, Ultraman Pole. Voda turned to Pole just as he appeared. “There you are”, the alien grinned. “Afraid of blood?” “Not the slightest”, Pole said. “Would be annoying if I ran screaming after painting Stefansborg with your innards.” “Even if I would fail”, Voda said, “there are many, many more waiting to take the spot. You cannot win in any way possible. “I’m not afraid of your race”, Pole muttered. “I’m not talking about them”, Voda laughed. As Pole stood in surprise, the alien charged, ramming Pole into an office building. The building collapsed as the Ultran fell on it, and Voda was quick to follow. He held his hand out and fired a bright blue energy blast from it. Pole rolled out of the way and got up, then struck a battle pose. The cocky Voda ignored that and charged again, but Pole blocked his attack, kicked his side and uppercut his head. As Voda stumbled back, Pole tried to hit him with a roundhouse kick, but Voda dodged it. Voda then tried to land a few punches on Pole, who parried them all and grabbed Voda’s eye horns. He then pulled Voda’s head down and kneed it, then tossed the alien to the ground. Voda got up, dizzy, and turned to Pole again. “You’re quite a fighter”, he said. “You’re not as dangerous as you think.” “Yes I am”, Voda laughed again. He fired another energy blast, but this one was shaped like a buzz saw. As Pole hopped out of the way, the saw turned around and flew right at him again. Pole took flight, flying high up in the sky, followed by the annoying saw. He took a few turns but couldn’t shake the saw, so he finally stopped and swiped his hand, throwing a Polium Blade at it. The two blades collided and shattered, and Pole flew down to his foe again. Voda laughed, apparently having cooked up some new scheme. Indeed, very soon a comet landed next to him. Pole had seen this a few times too many to not understand what it meant. A new monster stood in the crater. It was tall, shaped almost like a long tree branch, and just as brown. On its belly and chest was a strange colorful pattern that made the being look almost like a totem pole with arms and legs. Pole recognized it as Gyango, an ancient monster created by wishes from an evil man. Gyango attacked immediately, but Pole blocked its punch. Voda came up beside him and kicked Pole, and Gyango followed with another punch. As the evil duo knocked Pole to the ground and his Color Timer started blinking, they began relentlessly kicking him. Suddenly, they were both knocked down. As Pole dizzily looked up, he saw Bogara striking a martial arts pose, which considering her monstrous appearance looked rather strange. “Bogara?” he said. “What are you doing?” “Trying to seduce you with my fantastic charm”, she replied, "and helping out along the way". Gyango got up and angrily roared, the sound reminding of a heavy wind rather than even a beast’s voice. Bogara stepped towards him and slammed him with her tail, causing him to fall, then fired a couple of energy blasts at him. Pole got up then, just as Voda did, and the two charged at each other. They engaged in a fast combination of strikes, but Pole managed to knock his foe away, then kick him to the ground. Voda got up again, angrily screaming, but Pole charged up his Polium Ray, then held his arms like an X and fired it. Voda was hit and obliterated by the blast. Meanwhile Gyango was helplessly running from Bogara, who knocked him to the ground time and time again. Suddenly, with its controller dead, the monster vanished into thin air like the spirit it was. Pole then turned to Bogara. “Um… thanks”, he said. “You’re welcome”, she replied. “I think I really should leave. I don’t want to stay here and stare on you every time we meet.” “So you’re flying away.” “No”, she said a bit happier. “I always wanted to visit Japan. However, I might stop by sometime during the coming year. If you don’t hate me by then, perhaps we could… you know… if you’d feel like it.” She then waved, and flew away over the landscape. Gone, but this time as a friend. August 4th, 2044 C.A.T HQ, Stefansborg As Peter entered the HQ after his day off, he was met with an annoyed look from Casper. “Where were you through all that?” he moaned. “Sleeping like a baby”, Peter smiled. “It’s not so bad”, Emelie said as she approached them. “Ultraman was here to help us, so we can’t complain. Had a good waste of time?” “Yeah”, Peter nodded. “Good. There is a weird-sounding toilet for you to investigate…” |

EPISODE XIX: TOOTH FAIRY August 10th, 2044 C.A.T HQ, Stefansborg Taiki watched the monitors late at night. The lack of sleep didn’t affect him the slightest. Today, however, a deeper problem had entered his head. “Coffee?” Tanja said as she sat herself down nearby. Taiki nodded and took a mug. “I think I’ve gotten a feel for this place now”, he said. “Is that so?” Tanja said with mild interest, starting to write something down on a computer. “Yeah. And the team. They’re good fellows.” “Sure”, Tanja nodded. “I mean, Casper’s a bit of a braggart, Johan’s a big geek, and Peter…” she trailed off. “I always got the impression you two really…” “Don’t go there”, Tanja said sharply. Taiki went silent. “Should I stop talking?” Taiki asked. “No, it’s fine, I guess”, Tanja smiled faintly. “I’m just a bit tired.” “I usually talk a lot when I’m nervous.” “Really? What are you so nervous about?” Tanja looked at him and gave him a friendlier smile. Taiki went silent again, as if he was about to say something embarrassing. He looked over his shoulder and then leaned forward. Tanja felt a bit awkward. She had a sneaking feeling that he was going to… “I’ve got to go to the dentist”, Taiki blushed. Tanja froze in her motion for a while and then burst into laughter. “Oooooh!” she said, relieved. “What’s so scary about that?” “It doesn’t scare you?” he replied. “The only part of it that WOULD scare me is negated by the fact that C.A.T gets free dental”, Tanja smiled. She was about to say something else, but one of the monitors blinked for attention. Some sort of anomaly at Forshaga Wolf Crystal Mine. “This is why I hate taking the monitors”, Tanja said, annoyed. “When the lower agents sit here, nothing ever happens!” She picked up the phone to call Captain Emelie just as the Captain stepped through the door. “Captain”, Taiki said, rising from his chair. “We have an unidentified underground energy reaction at Forshaga Wolf Crystal Mine.” “Move out immediately”, Emelie snapped. “It could be a monster. If it is, you will need to move the civilians out of the area and I’ll call for the rest of the team.” Taiki and Tanja nodded and rushed off to the jets. Forshaga Wolf Crystal Mine, shortly after Wolf Crystal was a new type of crystal discovered and found only in west and south Sweden. Only three places in the world housed these beautiful gems, Forshaga, Helsingborg and a site on the border to Norway, near the River Klar. The name was given because the first such crystal was found by a news team following a wolf pack. Trade with the abundance of Wolf Crystal in Forshaga was one of the main pillars of the new Swedish economic success in the 2010s. Emelie and Taiki reached the location in no time, thanks to the superfast jets the team used. Forshaga Wolf Crystal Mine was apparently throbbing with activity, but not that of frightened workers running in fear. Rather, they were gathered in a circle and cheering happily. As the two landed and ran over to the mine to get to the bottom with the confusion, the workers happily greeted them. “C.A.T?” one said. “What are you doing here? Are you trying to cover the discovery up or something?” “Discovery?” Tanja asked. “We picked up an energy sig—holy guacamole!” she added as she saw what the workers gathered around. It was the largest piece of Wolf Crystal she had ever seen… a gigantic chunk the size of a pillow! “Forget it, it’s ours!” another worker said angrily. “You can’t come here and steal it from us!” “Er… listen, people, we really had no idea about this…” “Yeah right”, the worker said and gripped a pick axe. “We’ll protect it with our lives.” Taiki and Tanja nervously backed away, and went back to the jets. Tanja immediately called Emelie and reported about the incident. “The two events are undoubtedly connected”, was Emelie’s response. “Stay in the area. I’ll send Peter, Casper and Johan over to you.” “Roger that”, Tanja nodded. “We can’t get answers from the workers, though. They think we’re here to steal their discovery.” “If they’re afraid of you”, Emelie smiled, “they’ll be in a riot when the press hears it. Which they inevitably will. Keep me informed.” She then vanished off the screen. “Taiki”, Tanja said. “I hope your dental visit wasn’t tomorrow, we’ll be forced to stay here. The team’ll be around soon, and I need at least a few minutes of sleep.” August 11th, 2044 A few hours later, Taiki and Tanja woke up. They got out of their uncomfortable but free-of-charge beddings in the jet cockpits, and went to meet the team as they arrived. Taiki filled them in on the situation. “We can’t go near?” Casper said. “They must’ve gotten gold fever. Or more like…Wolf Crystal fever. I checked with the captain, by the way. The energy is still glowing strong as ever.” “How do we get into the mine now?” Johan said. “The workers aren’t working. They’re guarding the place!” “We should try and find another entrance”, Peter said. “And if we can’t, we have the equipment to create one.” The team nodded and decided to spread out, hiding and searching for an entrance. Peter walked by himself through some bushes. It’s fishy, he explained to Pole. Crystals can be big, but Wolf Crystals have so far only been found in tiny bits. Like diamonds, it’d be a sensation with one the size of an egg. This is quite big, then, Pole agreed, happy to learn something new about Earth. And since Emelie thinks it’s a monster… She’d think a monster caused the War on Terror, Peter smiled, but the creepy part is that she’s often right. It’s possible there’s some truth in it. He soon reached a rocky hill. There’s no entrances here, he pouted. I’ll call the others. It’s a perfect spot, but I’ll need a big, neat gun. Why don’t we use the Polium Ray? Excuse me pardon sorry what? We could blow a hole in the rock with the Polium Ray. You’ve seen me use it countless times. You mean to tell me I can do that? Sure, you’re my host. You can employ some of my abilities. You knew that already! I’m going to feel so silly now… Peter moaned, but nonetheless straightened up. He held his arms forward, palms together with his fingers pointing forward. He felt a rush of energy flow into his arms. Instinctively, as if he himself was used to doing this, he formed an X with his forearms. In an instant, a stream of energy flowed from his forearms and impacted the rock wall, causing a massive explosion and creating a big hole, large enough for a car to drive right in. Amazing! Peter smiled. I can really do that!? It could have been stronger, Pole mumbled. When Ultraseven arrives, we should really work on that. Not long after, the rest of the C.A.T team assembled by him. “I, er… found an opening”, Peter lied. “It must have been created recently by those workers.” “All right”, Casper said, “Tanja, Taiki, you watch our backs. Johan, Peter, you take my sides.” The team nodded in agreement and drew their weapons, following Casper into the cave. The darkness illuminated by lights from the C.A.T’s guns, they soon followed the path opened by the Polium Ray, reaching the giant interior of the mine. They turned off the lights, relying on the lighting inside the mine and unwilling to catch attention in case any workers had entered again. “Suppose we find this giant energy reaction and it is a monster”, Johan said, “What do we do then? These handguns are strong, yes, but against a monster they don’t really do much.” “We don’t know if it’s violent”, Peter said. “If it is, we’ll have to lure it out of the mine as peacefully as we can and deal with it outside so the mine doesn’t collapse.” As they proceeded into the mine, they soon began hearing noises. Roaring noises. “That’d be your peaceful monster”, Tanja said sarcastically. “It has to be just around the corner.” “Everyone, stay alert”, Casper ordered. “In case of an emergency, we’ll bring it out through the main entrance, evacuate the workers and defeat it th-“. He was interrupted by the sudden appearance of an immense figure stepping around the corner. The monster was positively huge; one of the largest the team had ever seen. Hunching over them, its massive dinosaur body filling the entire giant tunnel, its back was covered in what appeared to be crystals. On its forehead was a much larger crystal stuck out like a horn. The monster’s name was Crystal King. Luckily, the monster seemed to not notice them. Keeping silent, the team moved slowly to the wall. “Quiet, everyone”, Casper whispered. “Maybe it’ll go back inside and allow us to call for more backup.” “MONSTER!” the team suddenly heard. “It’s a giant monster come to take its crystals back!” As they looked around, they saw one of the workers having gone back into the mine. Irritated by his shouting, the monster roared and thrashed violently at the walls. “Get away!” Johan yelled at the worker as the team opened fire on the monster. Roaring in rage, Crystal King was unimpressed with their attempts, and retaliated instantly. The forehead crystal glowed brightly, and soon emitted a purple energy blast. The C.A.T members narrowly dodged it, and began retreating out of the mine, firing at Crystal King as they did. Outside the mine, the workers were running around in panic, their attention finally diverted from their crystal chunk. “I guess it’s the wrong time,” Taiki said, “but that’s Wolf Crystals on its back. The crystals must come from this monster!” “Very helpful”, Casper said irritatedly. “How are we going to take to the sky with the monster chasing us? He’ll flatten us before we reach the jets!” “Leave that to me”, Peter said and ran towards the forest suddenly. As the others tried to voice an objection, Peter blasted Crystal King repeatedly with his gun screaming “COME HERE, MONSTER!” “He’s suicidal!” Tanja exclaimed as she watched the monster turn to Peter. “He’ll be all right”, Casper assured her. “He’s C.A.T. He’s also given us a chance to get to the jets. As the team hurried to their jets, Crystal King turned back to them, seeing his other weak foe vanish among the trees. Roaring loudly, he sent a surge of energy through his crystals. Several of them launched out like missiles, and flew straight towards the C.A.T jets. The C.A.T members managed to avoid getting hit, but the attack utterly blew the jets to pieces. Roaring in triumph, Crystal King prepared to finish off the puny humans… until a kick from his side knocked him over. Rising, angrily observing what had challenged him, he saw Ultraman Pole strike a battle pose, ready for a fight. “It’s Ultraman!” Johan cheered. “Now we have a chance!” “Let’s try and get these workers to safety”, Casper said. “Ultraman can handle the monster.” Crystal King roared loudly and charged at his new foe. Pole sidestepped the monster, then grabbed it and threw it to the ground. Crystal King arose and charged again, delivering a series of strikes that Pole was able to deflect. The monster then caught him by surprise by spinning around and slamming his side with its tail, sending Pole down to the ground. The monster then laughed as it launched more of its crystals towards Pole. The hero was unable to avoid them, and was hit with numerous explosive crystals. As C.A.T looked on behind the monster, they beheld the crystals regrow instantly. Pole got up again and charged at the monster, striking relentlessly at its stomach. As Crystal King backed away, Pole then charged up, threw his arms to his sides and fired his Polium Rain attack from his color timer, sending a long series of blasts upon Crystal King. Pole then attempted to attack again, but Crystal King returned fire from his forehead crystal. Hit in the chest by the attack, Pole was pushed back, and Crystal King continued to fire his forehead blast repeatedly on his helpless foe, whose color timer now started to blink. “He’s getting beaten!” Taiki exclaimed. “We’ve got to do something!” “Do what?” Tanja replied. “Nothing bites on that monster! At least nothing we have!” “Maybe it does”, Johan said. “If we destroy that crystal on his forehead, we’d buy time for Pole to get back into the fight.” “All right”, Casper said, “it’s worth a shot!” The rest of the team nodded, drew their guns and fired a volley of blasts against the crystal. As Crystal King roared in pain, the crystal shattered, sending out a purple wave of energy. Pole arose, beholding Crystal King thrashing around in pain. Taking the opportunity, he gave Crystal King an uppercut to the jaw, then followed up by grabbing the monster’s head and throwing it to the ground. As Crystal King struggled to rise, Pole gave him a kick to the head, downing him again. He then backflipped away to get some distance, and as Crystal King finally got up, crossed his arms as an X, firing his Polium Ray upon the monster, disintegrating it entirely. Satisfied with his handiwork, Pole then flew off into the sky, his work finished. Some time later, the C.A.T team awaited their pickup near the closed-for-now mine. “What’ll happen to the whole Wolf Crystal industry now”, Tanja asked, “if the monster truly was the source of it?” “They’ll dig up the rest and the price will skyrocket”, Peter replied. “With the demand on this stuff already being huge, and the supply now shrunk to a minimum, there’s no telling what a tiny little piece could cost.” “Yeah…” Johan concurred, quietly slipping a small piece in his pocket. “Anyone could make a fortune off it.” As the team walked off to the pickup, the crystals, deprived of Crystal King’s life force, began to melt to nothing. |
