I don't live in Atlanta... Nakajima was in Chicago last year, and before that, the last event he was at was in Hollywood in 2000. So, that's hardly "alot" of events. If you want to put on an event in your locality, you should -- just like I'm doing in San Francisco, my home town. |

August, how do you successfully promote this kind of film fest? Obviously I figure various forms of advertising. What usually works best for putting people in seats in the theater for these films? |

Internet exploitation, word of mouth, press releases, co-ops with local businesses, print ads and/or television/radio -- as early out as possible.

Well, Nakajima has had the most... And for a Japanese star, that is what I consider alot. As for doing something like this, I could never get the funding. Even if I got a good job and teamed up with Lee, the funding is non-existant. I did try to get an event going for the 10th Annerversary of G2K but since the people to contact have disappered. Like thoes e-mails to contact Sony on henshin!online. Sure, if I asked Mike for some names I could get one film shown, but nothing could happen... Plus, you wrote a book. Along with that being hard to get published based on subject matter, you got the funding in adition to your regular job. |

 I wouldn't say "non-existent". I would say our budget for our first go round at an event like the ones August regularly does would be "modest".  Evan, when endeavoring to do something, anything there has to be a starting point. You used your example of trying to organize a viewing of Godzilla 2000 and this project of yours never got off the ground. That does not mean you can't pull it off and have some modest success with it. It does mean you'll have to go back and figure out exactly what you did wrong...and then come up with a plan that will work. Let's be realistic: you're 15 years old and still not in the work force, earning a wage, which would enable you to put aside some money. That alone would present a tremendous challenge for you. You also live in a smaller town. If I were you I'd work a "grass roots" campaign of generating interest in Godzilla movies, host some viewings at your house, then go from there and build on that. Write your own Godzilla "column" for your high school newspaper...or start up a journal, write your own reviews for Godzilla movies and get them printed, then hand them out. These are merely some things that might work. You can't simply pay for a film, rent out a theater to play the movie and simply expect that people are going to show up. |

Evan, I can understand your frustration, but I started organizing events when I was 17 years old -- it helped that I was able to get people interested in putting up the money to get started. But, after a couple of events, we were able to allow the events to pay for themselves. Now, many years later, I'm working with a movie theater that believes in my projects and works together with me in making them happen (for the record, my book didn't fund any of these events). What we do, is what other events do -- solicit sponsors and raise money to cover your expenses. Don't give up! I don't know where you live, but if you can find a repertory theater around your locality -- one that shows old movies -- you might be able to talk to them and they might be open to booking some films... You never know! |

I'm glad to hear you say that. I have mulled, for several years, trying to put together, or help another person put together, a theatrical viewing of some of these classic Godzilla films in Atlanta, GA. I can't say I could really do much this year but I might be able to in 2010. |
