The original eight Gamera films and the three Daimajin films are being issued by Kadokawa Entertainment in Japan this June. There are no details on possible extras. This following link was posted by Joseph Goodman over at the Classic Horror Film Boards: http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20090403_80398.html Here are some sample captures, courtesy of Ian Friedman of HK Film News, from the HDTV transfers of these films: GAMERA VS. Holy crap they look good, especialy the Showa Gamera. WTF. However, why waste cash on Showa Gamera and not the Kaneko trilogy which would be more profitable? Plus, I would like to see Toho's response to this. Goji on blu-ray? |

We desperately need to see the Kaneko trilogy on Blu-ray in the US. That would be freaking spectacular. And damn, wouldn't be awesome if we actually got every Godzilla movie ever made on Blu-ray? The Japanese versions and the American versions on the same disc, of course. I'd probably die from the excitement, and I don't even have blu-ray equipment yet. |

I would be absolutely delighted to see all the Godzilla films(or even just some of them) released to Blu-Ray format. That said I would like to suggest, Crow, and as an owner of a hi def TV(a 32" 720p Samsung flat panel) and a Samsung Blu-Ray player, that you may find that ownership of these high end(and hi-def) electronics has a novelty(for lack of better word) and that "novelty" may wear off much sooner than you think. I watch my standard DVDs more often and have evolved to a point where I enjoy them as much as the Blu-Rays. The euphoria of watching my first Blu-Ray DVD has long worn off, replaced by weary anticipation of handing a Best Buy cashier $30 or more for a movie title I could also buy for about $10 less, albeit with less pixels. I own approximately thirty two(32) Blu-Ray DVD titles and all of them look fabulous on my HDTV while in the Blu-Ray player. Most of the Blu-Ray titles I have cost me $25-30 each and about a half dozen were over $30. Standard equivalents of these DVDs would run between $19-22 depending on whether I buy these online or at Best Buy. Because of the economy I scaled back my Blu-Ray DVD purchases. Now I may a Blu-ray title every couple of months and that's it. I look forward to the day, Crow when you can post here that you've got these high end electronics in your possession and you're using them. I also believe you'll find that they have a pleasurable effect which, unfortunately, may not last long as long as you'd hope.

I got something to say: Do we really need to get blu-ray? Isn't blu-ray just a DVD version of that the Beta tape was to VHS? Movies in 20 years from now wil be on flash drives. Then I shall start rebuying. Unless if it is kaiju... |

Obviously investing in a Blu-Ray DVD player and Blu-Ray DVDs is an individual choice. You must also obviously have a 720p or 1080p hi-def TV to fully utilize(and appreciate) the improved image enhancement of Blu-Ray DVDs. My decision to buy a hi-def TV was based on two things: 1. the weight of flat panels, that is, those in my price range(of affordability), average between 35-50 lbs. My own HD flat panel weighs less than 40 lbs. I have moved from residence to residence in my lifetime with a fair degree of regularity so it's easier to carry a flat panel than a CRT or "tube" TV. Tube TVs that are 27" and larger are quite heavy. I used to own a 36" Magnavox tube TV(curved screen) and a 30" JVC wide screen flat screen: both of these units were monsters, weighing in at 186 lbs and 137 lbs respectively. I sold them both because I got tired of carrying them around from one residence to another. My second TV is a 27" Sony Trinitron flat screen(a 2005 model) that I kept and weighs about 90 lbs. I can lift it and carry it around but it's a major pain in the ass(and back). I keep it because it was considered one of the best tube TVs on the market when it first came out and because I always keep a second TV in the house. I plan on buying a second 32" hi-def TV at the end of this year(a discount brand from Brands Mart) so I can say goodbye to my tube TV. My decision to buy a Blu-Ray DVD player was more curiosity. I have no regrets about buying the Blu-Ray player but it's harder to afford current movie title releases at their full price. Blu-Ray DVDs are sold for $14.99 at Best Buy but they're older films I already have on standard DVD. I have read that future DVDs will be considerably smaller and will have even more storage space than what's on the market right now. Until Blu-Ray players are routinely priced at $200 and less, and until Blu-Ray DVD prices come down, I don't see a "migration" of the majority of the public investing in Blu-Ray players and/or discs. |

Yeah, that may be so. But HD is such a significant leap forward. I already have to stretch DVD resolutions to fit my screen(computer screen that is). I'd prefer everything to be in a higher resolution. I've seen a lot of HD stuff now, so I'm having a hard time going back to DVD. I've pretty much stopped buying DVDs for now. I'd like to wait until I can play blu-rays, so I can buy those instead. There's no going back for me. Edited by crowmagnumman, Apr 5 2009, 02:22 PM.
