While browsing around I came upon a very nice little site: http://darkskyfilms.com ---Dark Sky Films, a source for some grindhouse, weird and obscure sci-fi/horror, film noir and documentary/television films. The site includes information about their company and their current catalog inventory of films and future releases, including one of my absolute favorite 60's weirdo sci-fi/horror films, Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster(1965), slated for official DVD release on 5-30-06. They have some other cool films currently in their inventory. If you are a fan of weird and obscure films of these genres, this site is definitely worth checking out! :)

I really like the efforts of Dark Sky Films, I have the discs; Terror Beneath the Sea, The Flesh Eaters and Without Warning and I will definitely be picking up, Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, I have it on a nice looking DVD-R, but I always say, if a film is released to an official DVD, I'll definitely pick it up. :)

I also have Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster(1965) on DVD-R. The company I bought this DVD-R from even put some nice cover art on it, and the disc includes a trailer and a short "still" gallery. The movie itself is a typical low-budget affair, with average(at best) effects in places and absolutely atrocious effects elsewhere. Despite this the movie has always been a favorite of mine-seeing android astronaut Frank Saunders attacked by the aliens after his capsule crashes, monstrously disfiguring him, then the android going on a rampage due to the damage to his "brain" is great! The climactic battle between the disfigured android and the the alien's pet space monster Mull is a little disorganized and rushed, but still great fun. Mull is one ugly-looking, and disagreeable monster, and seeing Saunders mix it up with the bulky space beast, then open up on the aliens with one of their ray guns, blowing up their ship-great stuff. I was surprised to see James Karen, a veteran character actor of television and commercials, in this movie. This film is, along with The Crawling Eye, one of my favorite B-movie horror movies. :)

It's been a while since I've sat and watched my DVD-R disc of, Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, I'll have to see if anything other than the film was included on the disc. James Karen also starred in, Return of the Living Dead, didn't he? The Crawling Eye has long been a favorite of mine, I think the beasties in that film are outstanding!

I believe I read a while back that this film released a year after, Grizzly and using the same director and many of the same actors from the film, received a DVD release a few years back, but was of somewhat poor quality. Shriek Show has now re-released the film and it's currently available. For anyone unfamiliar with the film, here's a brief synopsis along with the new DVD specs:

A group of animal lovers are victims of an ironic twist of fate when mutant wildlife reign terror over them in this fantastical suspense film. These kind souls, who have convened in the woods of Northern California for a two-week camping trip, are delighted to spend time in the nature that they adore. However, the indigenous animals who greet them are no longer cute, gentle creatures; they have been turned into evil, mutated versions of themselves due to the depletion of the ozone layer. A fierce and frightening battle for survival ensues in this unique environmental horror film.

I have never seen this movie...<hangs head in shame>...that said I found a decent review of this film here: Day Of The Animals-movie review

Let me add that this review is about the "Liberty" DVD release, which was full-framed and had no DVD extras, hence the negative remarks about the DVD, but not necessarily about the film itself.

Thank you Kaijufanatic for the headups about this classic film thumbs up

It's been years since I've seen it, but hope this newly released DVD will be a better looking DVD.

I noticed that Christopher George was in this film...between this film and the one a year earlier(Grizzly) in 1976, I wonder if he had a "thing" for doing films with lots of critters

I've read online that there are some that feel this was an indirect sequel of sorts to, Grizzly, but it's never been verified. This film does retain a lot of the cast from Grizzly, too.

I found one online bit about this film stating that they can see Leslie Nielsen in an early 'serious' effort. I always find it funny that most of today's viewers only recognize Nielsen from....is it Police Story, Mr Magoo, etc. I always saw him in more serious efforts....Forbidden Planet and The Poseidon Adventure to name a couple, so I always associate him in serious roles!

I would say Leslie Nielsen's most "serious" role was that of the space vessel Captain in 1956's Forbidden Planet. He is a "stiff" in this stellar science-fiction film. In fact, IMO, had he been any more rigid he might have been mistaken for a two by four. tongue-1

A very nice site and a great review. I was also impressed by the review of the Boris Karloff box set. Kimi, I don't know much about Amicus. Were they predominantly a film studio emphasizing horror, like Hammer? eyebrow

Yes, they are probably best known for anthology films, but they did a few other regular feature length films as well. Kind of a competitor to Hammer in the 60s. Here's a list of their films:

The Monster Club (1980) ... Production Company
The People That Time Forgot (1977) ... Production Company
At the Earth's Core (1976) ... Production Company
The Land That Time Forgot (1975) ... Production Company
The Beast Must Die (1974) ... Production Company
Madhouse (1974) ... Production Company
And Now the Screaming Starts! (1973) ... Production Company
The Vault of Horror (1973) ... Production Company
From Beyond the Grave (1973) ... Production Company
Asylum (1972/I) ... Production Company
What Became of Jack and Jill? (1972) ... Production Company
Tales from the Crypt (1972) ... Production Company
I, Monster (1971) ... Production Company
The Mind of Mr. Soames (1970) ... Production Company
The House That Dripped Blood (1970) ... Production Company (as An Amicus Production)
Danger Route (1968) ... Production Company
The Terrornauts (1967) ... Production Company
They Came from Beyond Space (1967) ... Production Company
Torture Garden (1967) ... Production Company
The Psychopath (1966) ... Production Company
The Deadly Bees (1966) ... Production Company
The Skull (1965) ... Production Company
Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965) ... Production Company
Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965) ... Production Company (uncredited)
It's Trad, Dad! (1962) ... Production Company

I'll double check to be sure that is all listed.

I have these three(3) titles on DVD-though none are my favorites I still enjoy watching each of these from time to time. I am familiar with most of the rest of the titles you listed, especially The Beast Must Die(1974), which I believe has just been released by Dark Sky Films, and one that is at the top of my "DVD Want" list.
