![]() In 1978, Penthouse magazine published one of Stephen King's short stories - Children of the Corn. Six years later, Fritz Kiersch made a film about it that made a gigantic splash in pop culture. Since then, "Children of the Corn" has become a cult series which Stephen King says is an embarrasment, though he calls the original "an avatar of 70's horror". The number of sequels have often been exagerrated, enough to the point that Stephen King actualy thinks that there was a "Children of the Corn In Space". The originaly trilogy is the most popular one, but so far there has been 10 films (and 1 unrelated film which was still based on the Stephen King short story). Here is a listing of the films: Deciples of the Crow (1983) Children of the Corn (1984) Children of the Corn 2: The Final Sacrifice (1992) Children of the Corn 3: Urban Harvest (1993) Children of the Corn 4: The Gathering (1994) Children of the Corn 5: Fields of Terror (1995) Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return (1998) Children of the Corn: Revelations (2001) Children of the Corn (2009) Yep, it has been remade. Though unlike most other remakes, the producer of the first COTC is comming back and unlike last time, taking full control of the production without the SciFi Channel ruining it and even had Stephen King co-write the script. Plus the Johnathan Elias, the guy who did the score for the original, is also comming back for the remake (I think, but I am going to say it anyway since I have high hopes for the remake). More details can be found out via IMDB. So, without further to do, here is this forum's COTC topic... And the remake is going to be showing on the SciFi Channel on the 26th... http://www.liljas-library.com/img/other/children_2009.jpg |

Well then you are in luck. All through the week, the first film going to be shown on the Encore channels and SciFi will have parts 4-6 shown before the remake shows. Continuity wise, there is none except with No. 666 and the original. No. 2 and 3 are it's own continuity with the original, so you don't have to worry. Here is how I classify the films in comparison to kaiju eiga: Diciples of the Crow = King Kong Appears In Edo Children of the Corn = Gojira COTC 1-3 = The Showa series COTCT & COTC666 = Heisei series COTCT 4, 5, and Revelations = Millenium series before the Kiryu Saga was made REMAKE = GINO |

What do you think of the trailer Lee? The only real sad part about it all is that of all the deleted scenes, someone could make another print of the US trailer and add in the couple of frams which the final film had. |

Well, a third remake of the original is being done, this time by Dimension (diffrence between this and the remake showing in Sci-Fi this Saturday? Sci-Fi worked with Anchor Bay (the copyright owners of the first film and copyright owners of the first three films in the UK) to make the first remake. But now another? So soon? Damn, this is crazy. Turns out that "Scream 3" and "The Skeleton Crew" screenplaywrite Ehren Kruger is writing this second remake. Here was the official statement released by Dimension: “We felt the New World film was a missed opportunity,” Dimension owner Bob Weinstein tells Variety. “If you read the short story, it’s got such a strong feeling to it and there’s this religious overtone to it as well. Ehren wants to hit it hard. It’s popular in Hollywood to say you’re re-envisioning a project, but a lot of the time they’re just carbon copying the original. We are bringing something new to the story.” This is bull. Especialy when I was waiting for film no. 8 from Joe Harris, who released this comment some time ago: "COTC8" will maintain the spirit of the original film and the Stephen King short story. It will be scary with hardcore thrills and disturbing deaths with elements you'll recognize as signatures of the franchise gorillas (chases through cornfields, deaths by sickles, teenage sex, sacrifices and the triumphant return of "He Who Walks Behind the Rows" included). It will take place in Gatlin and will draw on the history of that town as we know it." I agree with that Joe Harris wants to offer, all except the teenage sex parts since COTC 1 and 2 along with the short "Diciples of the Crow" didn't have sex in them. I think we just got our first unmade film. This should be nice if someone actualy came along to write something like "An Illustrated Critical History and Filmography of the Children of the Corn Series". And I was hoping that Joe Harris showing up on Bravo's "30 Scarriest Film Moments" to talk about the original COTC film was a sign of good faith. Guess I was wrong. Which reminds me, for those who wants to watch the films in order, here is the short "Diciples of the Crow" in two parts on youtube: So far, "Diciples of the Crow" seems to be the closest to the original Stephen King short story (http://www.killermovies.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-404785-children-of-the-corn-short-story.html). How true will this Sci-Fi Channel/Anchor Bay remake be? 4 days. This Sat. is going to rule. Edited by G2Kmaster, Sep 23 2009, 08:37 AM.

Review of the remake (look we 43 minutes to write): Usually I would also talk about the production of such a film before I actually review it, but screw it. This new “COTC” - first one in nine years and first good one in 16 (I love FS). Story wise, it is very true to the original short story. So true that it in fact copies lines from the book. Vicky and Burt are the biggest improvements because of this. Hell, they even made good use of the prom queen/Vietnam War backgrounds of the characters only hinted at in the short story. Plus a lot of things which were cut out of Burt’s visit to Gatlin’s one church were used great supplementary when we see the children worship. Acting wise - it blows most of the films in the whole series and most SciFi Channel originals. But Burt and Vicky are from award winning shows (Heros and Battlestar Galactica respectively) so it is not that shocking. Obviously a plus. The children are also a plus, including the new kid who is playing Isaac. John Franklin does make you have a feeling a “creepy”, but this new kid - when he just looks at you like when he looks at Malachi’s wife at the end for her impure thoughts - can put dread into your chest. Just too bad he wars shorts a la Ichiro from “Godzilla’s Revenge”. Kudos have to go to some things though: one, Burt getting physical with some of the kids. Then we see some gruesome deaths of little kids. Damn, this film took over what Freddy was supposed to do. The corn does seem to have what King said was lacking to the original film adaptation, it does seem to have a persona of it’s own. Last but not least, they took the safe road and not done anything for a physical appearance for “He Who Walks Behind The Rows”. They could have done something with some cheap CGI, and they could have made a cheap design or a very awesome design, but I like it that they kept it in the minds of viewers what He looks like. But now, we got to go to the negatives. I was psyched when I heard that John Elias would be co-composing this film, including getting a separate credit for the use of the original theme. It would be the second time a composer came back for the series (the other being David Litch, COTC2 and COTC3)And I love the times which the editors decided to use the old theme, but honestly it could have been use a lot more and could have made the film more effective. Another thing to bitch about is that no matter how true you want to stay with the book, two scenes from the original are in my opinion needed - badly. One was a redo of the coffee shop massacre and Joseph’s hunting down. Borchers being the master director for this material as he has shown, he would have done fantastic, especially since it would be different than the original’s version due to that I bet he would show the blood, but it was a missed opportunity. But then again, an Uncut version is coming out, but there comes another bad thing. The uncut version may or may make the biggest sin of this production something which ruins it plainly: the ritual sex scene. What the hell were they thinking? “Children of the Corn” - the series - has been one of the only slasher series not to have sex in it ever. Part 3 got close but saved us and Revelations showed some nipple - but nothing sexual - just nudity. But this film, god, it was unneeded. What I would have liked to see was more preaching from Isaac or use the screen time for more killing. But honestly, it is just bad. Uneeded. That kind of stuff is just bad. It could have been one of those things we could have assumed. Honestly. Overall, it is my second favorite film in the series (the original is my favorite, FS is tied with this film). Another remake is being planned by Dimension and Borchers said in a report that he wants this film to spawn a TV series, so let’s just see what happens. Just too bad that Joe Harris’ idea from COTC8 has been scrapped by how things have been going as of late. 4/5 |
