I'm curious to read what other fans first Godzilla films were, and if they can remember the experience.

My first was Godzilla Vs Hedorah in it's US release form as Godzilla Vs The Smog Monster. I was about 10 and snuck downstairs to see it on TV,it was on a late night film series on UK TV called The Worst Of Hollywood [though half the films weren't Hollywood...]. Other films included I think Plan 9 From Outer Space and Robot Monster. Two critics would basically mock the films for ten minutes than the film would start.

The thing is I already knew a bit about Godzilla,I was an avid reader and was really getting into monster movies,I had a book called Classic Movie Monsters [no longer have it] which had a chapter on Godzilla, and covered the films [albeit fairly briefly] up to Terror Of Mechagodzilla. Being also into dinosaurs,I wanted so much to see some of these films! Giant monsters destroying cities and fighting it out-wow!

Although it's a bit of a mess, though quite original in style,Godzilla Vs The Smog Monster wowed me,even with the sound turned down! I especially loved the battle at the end. A couple of years later we got a video player and I hired out Godzilla 1985,and then King Kong Vs Godzilla,I loved both despite being very different kinds of Godzilla movies, and copied them using another video player! That was all that was available in the UK though! Then a few years after that,UK TV showed some more Godzilla films andI was soon able to obtain most of the remaining Godzilla films on video from a bottleg seller-he would copy the Japanese laserdiscs onto tape!

The first "Godzilla" film I ever saw was Destroy All Monsters(1968). I saw this movie at the Rialto Theater in downtown Atlanta, GA with my (adoptive) father. I was seven years old(in 2nd grade in elementary school), the year 1969.

Obviously I can only recall fragments of the experience now. "DAM" was double billed with The Green Slime(1968), a Toei sci-fi film. Actually, my father took me to see "The Green Slime", unaware that Destroy All Monsters was also playing. It was a Saturday afternoon, very hot and sunny. I remember that the theater was mostly empty and was relatively small, compared to today's giant theaters and other movie plexes. The theatre reeked of popcorn and stale peanuts.

A trailer for the film Krakatoa East Of Java(1969) played before we started watching these movies.

The Rialto Theater was converted into some art house facility for plays/indie films many years ago.

Watching Destroy All Monsters got me hooked, permanently on Godzilla and Godzilla movies.

The first film I saw was 'The Return of Godzilla'; that was when I was 9, so it must have been a good 11 or 12 years ago. I discovered Godzilla after my Grandparents came back from their holiday with a Rodan toy for me; this one: Rodan

I didn't know a lot about Godzilla bar the brief description on the back of the box, but then one day my brother spotted a film at the video rentals. Of course now, after seeing the majority of the Godzilla saga, The Return of Godzilla is nothing particularl great, but it was the first one I saw. Mr. Smiles

'The void is that which stands right in the middle between this and that. The void is all-inclusive, having no opposite — there is nothing which it excludes or opposes. It is living void, because all forms come out of it and whoever realizes the void is filled with life and power and the love of all things' - Bruce Lee

I'm a little conflicted as to which film I saw first because I was so young, but I have the most memories of Mothra vs. Godzilla. I remember being outside playing as a young boy maybe 5 or 6 years old (about 1985) and I ran back in the house for some reason and I my Father was sprawled out lazily in a recliner watching Mothra vs. Godzilla. I remember being captivated particularly by the sound Mothra made and I ended up sitting down in the living room and finishing the movie with him. I also remember bits and pieces of seeing KK vs. Godzilla but I don't know if that was before or after Mothra.

The first Godzilla movie I seen was Godzilla Raids Again but I don't recall how old I was when I seen it. I definitely was under 10...all I know is that this movie started it all. It was also the first movie I "owned" (my mom recorded the movie from TV). This movie is still in my top 5 easily.

I don't coun't the 1998 Godzilla film a godzilla film.
So my first Godzilla movie was at my granmas farm when I was 4. It was King Kong vs Godzilla. It was an awsome movie to me. Except when Kong kicked Godzillas butt. I was dissapointed. I saw a few more godzilla films after that. Ironically they where all Godzilla Films where Godzilla lost.
