 Just out of curiosity, what makes "The Thing" better than "Alien" Lee?

Horror (this is based on scare level and critical scales, not personal):
-John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness
-John Carpenter's Halloween (I was not scared by the film, but MM was the only horror Icon I have had nightmares about. Total right now: 3)
-Ju-On: The grudge
-John Carpenter's The Thing (what can I say, he is one good director with horror)
-The Exorcist 3: Legion
-Stephen King's Children of the Corn (not scary, but awesome concept)
-Misery
-Nightmare on Elm Street
-The Excorcist
-Scream

Just out of curiosity, what makes "The Thing" better than "Alien" Lee?
Better? My posted lists are "favorites". I have John Carpenter's "The Thing" listed ahead of 1979's "Alien", to be sure. I enjoy watching Carpenter's film slightly more because of the character interactions, which I found more interesting, and at times amusing, as opposed to those of "Alien".
