Two years ago, the city of Lafayette, Louisiana contracted a company called RedFlex to operate a set of Safe Speed Vans. These vans park on the sides of streets and monitor your speed. If you are doing more than 5 mph over the limit, it takes a picture of you and your license plate to send you a ticket. Six months later, the same company was commissioned to install some cameras at certain red lights in the city. These cameras send you a ticket if you run the red light or if you speed through the light. There has been a tremendous backlash against these devices. People in the city have been fighting them, or they park a few feet away from the speed van and hold a sign warning drivers of the upcoming speed van. I don't have a problem with these vans. If you aren't speeding or running a red light then why would you have a problem? The red light cameras were placed at intersections with a high rate of right angle accidents. Everyone was complaining that they would cause more accidents with people trying to slam their brakes for a red light. However, the statistics are showing that the cameras have definitely reduced accidents. So do you have these in your cities? Are they as much of a controversy in your town? |

There are red light cameras installed, and active, throughout metro Atlanta. I'm not, however, sure how many there are. I agree, in theory, with the stated purpose of having these cameras, as stated by the local police: these cameras are supposed to be a deterrent to those lead footed drivers and other drivers who have a tendency to ignore traffic lights when approaching, and driving through, busy intersections. These cameras have been called "cash cows" by many and also labeled as nothing more than a way for local counties to generate more revenue. Do they catch those who run red lights and stop signs? Absolutely. That said I also have to wonder if these cameras work correctly all the time. If they malfunction that would, I would think, result in someone receiving a ticket when they shouldn't.

I don't know how they work in Atlanta, but here in Lafayette, a Red Flex representative actually reviews every picture to determine if the picture or ticket is justified. We did have one that was malfunctioning here in Lafayette. It would go off for the first vehicle that would go through the green light. As far as I know there were no complaints of these people receiving tickets. Now our parish (county for you other folks) is actually a cash cow. But the revenue that comes into our parish can always be seen in different construction and improvement projects. For a city this size, I think it was quite amazing that we opened 4 brand new roads. Now if the revenue is going to helping the police force, the more the better. I also think it's better to let the police work on worse crimes than running red lights and speeding. This way we get to reduce accidents and enforce THE LAW and the police can actually be available for robberies, accidents, and other crimes. |

Any chance these road openings were financed in other ways...such as federal stimulus money? |

Not at all. Federal Stimulus projects have not begun yet in the parish, in fact only one of them has been signed. These road projects began about a year and a half ago. Also it is all city and parish money (our city and parish is run by a consolidated government) since only one of these was a state road and that is one that is still under construction. Most state projects that are still underway or that are still being planned were funded with a State surplus that was allocated two years ago. The stimulus projects that have been slated for Lafayette parish are only a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of the projects going on in the city and parish. |
