Prologue

Tokyo
June 7, 2004

As the flames rose from Doragah’s charred body, Godzilla felt satisfied. He had taken his revenge out on his attacker and vanquished him. He had also discovered a new satisfaction, a new power that he had not known before. The Pera he had absorbed from Doragah continued to flow through his body. His enemy gone and his thirst for nuclear energy gone temporarily, Godzilla grunted and began his walk back toward Tokyo Bay.
Unknown to Godzilla or anyone in the city, Godzilla’s body had begun to produce a poisonous gas in the city. For some reason, the monster’s body began to release a mix of Pera and Nuclear energy. This meant bad news for all life in the city. As the minutes passed by, the air became more and more poisonous.

Godzilla continued his march toward the ocean, crashing into an overpass on the way. Fires erupted and explosions continued to erupt throughout the path of destruction. As Godzilla’s feet reached the water, the citizens watching from a distance breathed a cautious sigh of relief. The terror was over for now. But when would it return? The people of Tokyo had no idea of the trouble that this disaster would cause, and the long road ahead of them.

As the days passed the fires were fought and it was thought that cleanup would begin. However, the area was never deemed safe, cleanup never started, citizen were never allowed back in, and more of the city had to be evacuated indefinitely because of the dangerous air in Tokyo.

Construction Site for New National Government Building
Yokohama, Japan
March 4, 2006

The Prime Minister along with his cabinet surveyed the new building under construction. After the destruction of Tokyo, the new national government facility that was so badly needed was finally nearing completion. For two years, the city officials of Yokohama had to share their facilities with the national branches. Even though the monsters had not even fought or damaged any of the Akasaka or Nagatacho districts of Tokyo two years ago, the air had become so poisonous due to the mixture of pera and radiation emitted by the beasts.

Pera, which was once thought of as one of the safest and cleanest ways to produce energy had come back to haunt them. Pera had created the mutation Doragah. And the mixture of nuclear radiation and pera was making the air over Tokyo poisonous. It was impossible to clean up the air with anything known to man, and for some reason, no matter how much the wind blew the poison would stay put. However that was an advantage because the poison wouldn’t spread elsewhere.

Tokyo had become uninhabitable. Most of the people had moved to Yokohama, wanting to be close by when Tokyo was reopened. No one could have imagined that the cleanup would have taken this long. Two years later, the air was still unsafe to breathe; crews had not been able to even get into the city to begin the demolition of the buildings destroyed.

Because of the rapid expansion, Yokohama was in a constant state of gridlock. The city had not had adequate time to adjust their infrastructure for such an influx.

These were just a few of the many problems that Prime Minister Togashi now faced. He was elected to office in 2005. He had promised to rebuild Japan and strengthen the defense of the nation for Godzilla’s return. Things went smoothly during the first few months of his term due to the huge amount of aid coming from America. But late in 2005, America had to cut back the aid due to its own problems. America had to deal with the crisis of many natural disasters that took place such as the three major hurricanes that hit its southern coasts.

Togashi now felt he had to rebuild Japan alone. Not only did he have to rebuild, but he had to be prepared for the worst. Two years ago, Godzilla walked back out to sea. Since then, he had not been found, and there was no doubt in his, or the minds of the citizens, that he would return. He had already taken steps to prepare. After Godzilla’s attack, there were only two nuclear power plants left, and he had managed to decommission one and replace it with a pera facility. The only one that remained was the original plant built at Toki and a pera replacement was due to begin construction in the next few months. However, he was still certain that even with these precautions, Godzilla would return. The only questions were when and where.

Ogasawara Trench, Pacific Ocean

Schools of fish swam around as they tend to do. Hundreds of fish were all swimming toward a certain point in the trench. Vibrations from deep inside were attracting them. Soon, thousands of fish had come to see what was in the trench. Perhaps they were searching for food. They all gathered around what seemed to be a large rock mass deep inside the trench. This was the source of all the thumps. Thousands of fish scattered as a piece of the mass, in the shape of a tail lashed out violently. An eye opened, and the beast was awake. Godzilla smelled food, but he also smelled an enemy.

Chapter 1

Asama yama, Japanese Alps
Nagano Prefecture, Japan
March 5, 2006

Rachael Hart was excited as she approached the valley. She had hardly slept since she had gotten the phone call three days ago about this discovery. She had flown all the way from Boston to come see it in person.

Her old school friend, Dr. Kamichi had asked her for assistance with this. They had both studied Paleontology together, and he valued her professional opinion, but trusted her as a friend too.

Just four days earlier, a crew was digging in this area to lay a pipeline, when they found a hidden cave. Since then, the area had been roped off and the construction had ended. Dr. Kamichi had been called to explore the cave, and before long he had everything blocked off and shut down without explanation. Whatever he had found, it was valuable, because there were police everywhere around the barricades.

After her identification was checked, Rachael was escorted by two armed guards to a tent in the middle of a colony of tents set up on the west end of the site. She sat for about ten minutes before a short man with tiny round glasses walked in.

“Rachael, so good to see you, it’s been so long.” Dr. Kamichi exclaimed as he tried to catch his breath.

The odor of his sweat pierced Rachael’s nostrils. She tried to hide her disgust for her good friend’s lack of hygiene, while also trying to maintain her distance.

“I’m sorry about the smell,” he explained, “but I’ve had little time to rest or clean up since I got here yesterday. As you can see, a new water line was coming through this valley, and a cave was discovered. At first the crews thought nothing of it, but they decide to take a look in it in case it was a family shrine or something. Well it turned out to be more than just that. The mineralogists that explored the cave found a strange substance; it wasn’t rock, so they sent for me.

Once again Dr. Kamichi had to catch his breath. He was speaking so fast and was so excited. Rachael’s heart was racing along with his, because she knew he wouldn’t call her to Japan for something small. This was huge.

The doctor continued. “It turned out, that there was some bone material in the sample I took, but even more astonishing, there was still flesh attached to it. We began the excavation of the creature, and took more samples. The carbon dating is what caught our attention.”
“So tell me Toshio, what did it reveal?” Rachael asked, trying to hold back her excitement and hold down her lunch at the same time.
“Well,” Toshio said, “this creature burrowed here and died just under 100 years ago.”

Rachael was speechless. She still wondered why he had called her here for this. True it was amazing, but was he just showing off his find she wondered, remembering how he had a rather large ego. Did he actually need her, and if he did, would he actually admit it? She couldn’t hold it anymore, she had to ask.

“It seems like you’ve figured it all out, so why do you need me?”
“Well,” Dr. Kamichi hesitated, “I can’t quite figure out just what this creature is. I’m almost convinced it’s a dinosaur of some sort, but I can’t figure out which one. That’s where you come in. I have a few ideas, but no definite answer, so I was hoping you could help me. Maybe you could figure it out, or at least narrow it down.”

“Well Toshio,” Rachael sighed, “I guess I would have to see this thing first.

Sakano Island
South Pacific
March 5, 2006

The natives of the small island went about their normal daily activities as usual, fully aware that they were being watched and studied. The natives of this island in the past were very violent and territorial. They had let few into their community, and those few usually didn’t return.
Koichi thought he had changed that forever. This was his first undertaking as an anthropologist, and he was excited that he had made it this far. He had been living on the island with these natives for about a month and had learned so many things about them. His only companion was a linguistics expert, Hiroshi. He was the only man alive that could translate the language of these people. So far that was the only reason he had been allowed by the tribe to stay. Their only warning was to not cross the gates into the Forbidden Valley.

Koichi’s curiosity did not get the best of him however. He did want to explore the valley badly, but he wanted everything to go right. Only “chosen” ones from the tribe would go into the valley and hunt. In the meantime, the natives would spend the whole time praying to their god that they called Baradagi.

Baradagi was a complete mystery to the young anthropologist. He had never heard of such an idol before, and it was the top thing on his list for him to learn before he would leave.

“Well, what’s up for today?” Hiroshi asked his partner. “They natives will soon begin praying, they are sending the hunters back into the valley.”
Koichi pondered a while and finally said, “Arrange with the chief so that I can get as close to the gate as possible when the hunters enter the valley. We’ve seen little of the ceremony before they enter, and I would like to see more, perhaps even get a glimpse into the valley.”

“It’ll be hard,” Hiroshi replied, “but I’ll see what I can do. The chief is not an easy man to sway. Remember it took me four hours to finally convince him to let us stay.”

“Just see what you can make happen,” Koichi replied anxiously, “we need more info on this hunt. It takes place only once a week.”

Later that day

Koichi stood behind about two rows of natives, trying to get a glimpse of the hunters before they went into the valley. At the same time, he tried to get a glimpse of the valley itself, but all he could see was a jungle. The time had come; the hunters crossed the barrier into the valley. It would be at least six hours before their return. And so began six long hours of praying for the natives to keep Baradagi happy. It was going to be a long day.

Rachael was following her old friend Dr. Toshio Kamichi through a maze of tents, reporters, and researchers. Finally they reached the edge of a man made pit. Levels had been carved out of the valley and they all led down to a center. In the center of this pit was what looked like a large, monster mummy. You could clearly see bones, but there were still some pieces of rotted flesh on the beast. It did have a large shell, with hundreds of spikes all over it. Its head had a crown of about seven spikes on it and it had a snout with a spike on the end.

“This is our dinosaur; you just have to help us identify it.” Toshio told an astonished Rachael.

“Well, at first glance, it looks like it could be an ankylosaurus, but the ankylosaurus didn’t have a shell with spikes.” Rachael said as she examined the large fossil that lay before her. “I’ll need more time to research this.”

“That is fine.” Dr. Kamichi told her. “But tomorrow a fleet of helicopters are coming here. We’re takin this bad boy to Yokohama for further study. I just wanted you to see it here, before you saw it at the research center.”

The sea was still. It had been for days, until Godzilla choose to swim by. He was heading south to seek out a feeling he hadn’t felt since he was attacked two years ago. He sensed the presence of an enemy. Although this wasn’t the same enemy from two years ago in Shinjuku, he still felt a need to meet his opponent. Godzilla was hungry for energy, but his hunger would have to wait, something was calling him. With that, the behemoth made another turn, this time east.

Chapter 2

Sakano Island
South Pacific
March 5, 2006, 3:00pm

There was a panic amongst the natives of the small village. The hunters had returned early, but one was missing. Koichi tried to get close to the conversation between the chief and the hunters, but he couldn’t. His translator, Hiroshi, had tried to go around the other side to see what he could hear. Finally the natives all scattered and began to pray frantically. This made Koichi nervous. He was able to find Hiroshi and get the scoop.

“It seems that one hunter separated from the group,” Hiroshi explained, “and later the others found him dead by the lake side. He had not been injured though. There was no sign of an animal attack according to the others.”

Koichi was confused. “What do they think happened?” He asked.
With a worried look on his face, Hiroshi replied,” They think he got too close to the lake in the center of the island, and Baradagi got him.”
Just then, the wind changed direction, and increased in speed.

Rachael had hardly been able to sleep. Everyone had been working straight through the night to get the giant fossil ready for transport to the National Paleontology Research Center in Yokohama. The helicopters began arriving at about 2:00 am. The creature, now known as Anguriosaurus thanks to the research work of Dr. Hart, was almost ready. It was now 7:00 am, and even if she had time to sleep, Rachael didn’t feel like she could with all the excitement.

Rachael went over her drawings again, to make sure she had gotten every detail. The fossil had a long snout, with a single small horn resting just above the nose. Right above the two eye holes was a crown lined with seven horns. It appeared to be bipedal with a large shell, similar to a turtle, only with hundreds of spikes across it. It appeared to be built to withstand attacks from large predators. Finally it had a long tail with much larger spikes randomly lining it.

“The helicopters are ready to start lifting the first piece.” Toshio Kamichi told her.

They had strategically divided up the fossil for lifting, the first piece would be the most difficult, the shell. Seven helicopters started their engines. Soon they were in the air, and as the cables tightened, the shell began to separate from the rest of the body. Phase one of the move was underway.

Meanwhile in the Northern Sea
About 50 miles south of the Alaskan Coast

There was a rumbling in the underwater canyon. Rocks began to tumble and the wall of the canyon collapsed. A creature burst forth and began to swim in a straight line due south. This creature was being driven by an instinct that it had to follow. It had no idea what would happen when it would reach its destination, but it would go anyway.

Koichi and Hiroshi didn’t get any sleep. The natives had been up all night praying, trying to ward off the wrath of Baradagi. During the night, some loud noises came from behind the gate from the valley. It sounded like someone rubbing a deep string instrument that was out of tune. The wind had begun to blow, and a strange gassy smell had filled the air. The natives seemed to be in a panic.

“Anything new?” Koichi asked his translator.

Hiroshi listened for a while and shook his head. The chants had become so frantic that he almost couldn’t understand it. The strange noise came from behind the mountains again.

The native that was at the hut at the top of the hill began to act frantically. He began to shake a string connected to a hollow piece of wood, with other pieces attached to the side of it. This was rigged to be an alarm.

Some of the natives fled, others prayed faithfully. Koichi and Hiroshi both ran for cover in the trees. It was now obvious that something big and dangerous was coming. A large booming noise now came from the other side of the mountain. It sounded like large footsteps, coming closer and closer.

Finally a tree collapsed in the opening of the valley. A large foot came down and a head peered from the other side of the mountain. The creature stood about half as tall as the mountain. He had large eyes, which peered down at the natives frantically praying. He had a single row of spikes that ran down the length of his back and down to his tail. His skin was lined randomly with pores, which were producing a gas of some sort that was making the wind blow. The creature was on all fours, and moved slowly toward the opening between the mountains.

By now, most of the natives that had observed him began to flee toward the beach. Hiroshi began to run toward the beach but stopped when he noticed that Koichi wasn’t following.

“Aren’t you going to run?” Hiroshi asked nervously.

“Are you kidding, we are the first civilized man to see that Baradagi is actually a Varanopode that managed to survive extinction.” Koichi replied excitedly. “I wonder if this Varan is violent although I think we are about to find out.”

Hiroshi decided not to even argue but to head for the beach and hopefully to safety.

Varan had made his way into the village. Only the chief was left at the alter, still praying frantically to ward off the oncoming doom. Varan knocked down the pillar on the alter with his forepaw, instantly killing the chief. He then swung around, and as he did, his large tail took out three huts. The creature then set his eyes on a row of five huts along the side of the mountain. Varan opened his mouth and let out the familiar sound of a deep string instrument. He then charged the small row of huts, crushing the last two in the line and smashing the other three with his tail and body.

On the beach, the natives began to fill the small outrigger canoes to try to escape the island. Unfortunately there was no where to escape to. Hiroshi was still waiting for Koichi to come out of the jungle so that they could board their boat and head for the ship that was waiting. It was then that Koichi realized he hadn’t even thought to radio the ship and let them know of the trouble. Koichi was surprised to hear a voice immediately when he turned on the radio.

“There is a large object headed for the island,” the voice sounded frantically, “come in Dr. Koichi. There is a large submarine object headed for the island, you may be in danger!”

Hiroshi looked out toward the ocean and that’s when he saw the object the radioman on the ship was talking about. A large tidal wave was forming, and three pointed fins appeared to break the top of the wave. Hiroshi turned to run back into the jungle to get Dr. Koichi. This island had become too dangerous and they had to leave now.

The large wave destroyed all of the canoes occupied by the natives. A large head had emerged from the water. Three rows of dorsal fins then came up out of the water. Godzilla had come to the island to meet the god of the island, Baradagi, or Varan.

“Koichi, we have to leave now!” Hiroshi told his boss in a demanding voice.
Koichi finally stopped photographing the destruction and turned to his partner. “What’s wrong, we are perfectly safe here?” Koichi asked his frantic translator.

“No we aren’t…” Before Hiroshi could finish his sentence, Godzilla’s booming roar rang out across the island. “GODZILLA’S HERE!!!!!!!” Hiroshi cried out as he turned around and ran back toward the beach. Hiroshi had decided that his boss had lost his mind, and would leave with or without him.

Varan had heard the challenging roar of the king of the monsters. He turned to face his enemy that had just invaded his home. He returned the challenge with a roar of his own and rose to his two hind feet. Godzilla approached the demolished village to finally see his opponent. The two monsters froze. They seemed to be examining each other to find a weakness.

Varan decided to make the first move and jumped straight for Godzilla’s neck. The monster king was taken by surprised and knocked off of his feet. Varan sank his teeth into his victim’s neck trying to inflict some sort of damage. Godzilla roared in frustration at the monster’s futile attempt to pierce his invincible skin. He grabbed Varan by the neck and pulled him away so that he could get back on his feet. Varan struggled against the monster king’s strength but to no avail. Godzilla threw his opponent down to the ground. Immediately, Godzilla lunged his foot at his opponent striking him right in the gut. Varan yelled out in pain. With speed that unmatched his size, Varan turned onto his belly to expose the row of spikes on his back. With that, Godzilla’s foot came down again, this time the monster king fell back as he roared out in pain. Varan once again rose to his hind legs and bellowed out another challenge to the beast that had invaded his homeland.

Godzilla managed to regain his composure. He was even angrier than before. Both monsters lunged at each other. Varan opened his mouth, again reaching for Godzilla’s neck, but the King of the Monsters expected this move and ducked his head down under Varan’s and performed an upper cut into the monster’s jaw with his own head. Varan cried once again in pain and stumbled backward. A puff of gaseous air emitted from the monster’s pores allowing him to regain his stance. But before he could react, Godzilla had already swung his body around and his tail struck the body of his foe. With that Varan hit the dirt. Godzilla was tired of this fight. With an earthshaking slam, his tail struck the ground as he dug both of his feet in the sand. The dorsal plates on his back began to flicker like blue lightning. The beast opened his mouth and at once a blue beam of pure radiation shot out. At just that moment, Varan’s pores exhaled their gas to lift the beast up. The gas ignited engulfing the village and the beach in a large fire ball. Godzilla cried out in surprise as the wall of fire over took his body.

Hiroshi was desperately trying to row back toward the ship that had brought them to the island. Koichi was in the boat staring out at the island. He was wondering what had attracted Godzilla to the island like a magnet. Did he somehow know that Varan was there? Just as he pondered this, most of the island was engulfed in an explosion. They finally made it on board the ship, just as the smoke began to clear from the island. Finally, Godzilla’s figure could be made out, smoke still rolling off of it.

Godzilla opened his eyes, and roared out another challenge to his enemy, which lay against the base of the mountain, with smoke rolling off of him. Varan showed no more signs of life. Godzilla then let out a deep roar of triumph and turned back toward the sea from which he came. The king of the monsters was still hungry, and now that his territorial urges satisfied, he could go get what he craved. With that, he headed north, toward Japan.

Chapter 3

Air Force Hangar #12
Hachioji Air Base, Hachioji, Japan
March 6, 2006

People were scrambling around in a panic. This was the first time this wing had been mobilized in two years. The special Kaiju Tactical Force was now on high alert. People were on the phone alerting all the necessary parties of the world that Godzilla was awake and had made known landfall for the first time in two years.

General Shindo observed what was going on. It wasn’t more than an hour that had passed since they had received the distress call for the Hinami Maru. A helicopter was on its way to pick up an anthropologist and his linguistics expert, the two witnesses who were on the island and got pictures of the monster. He was apprehensive though. If this was true and Godzilla was at large once again, they still didn’t know where he was, and which way he was heading.

“Anything from the Nemura Maru?” Shindo inquired from his radio man.

“Nothing yet sir.” the radio man replied.

The General had dispatched the Nemura Maru, Shingashi Maru, and Kotami Maru to scope out the area between Tokyo and the Sakano Island. He was almost positive that Godzilla would head that way. The ships had left Yokosuka just thirty minutes ago, but the general was still nervous. How much of a head start did Godzilla have? Would he actually come to Tokyo again? Would he need to call an evacuation of Yokohama?

The Prime Minister had given the order to fire upon sight of Godzilla. Normally they would be expected to follow the rules of the SFDF and the Japanese constitution that state an enemy had to open fire before Japanese forces could. Godzilla, however, was already seen as a threat to national security. Under Japan’s rights to self defense, the Prime Minister felt it was necessary to initiate an attack the minute the creature could be found, and no member of the UN was about to argue with him about it.

Shindo just did not feel right about the situation though. He knew that if the ships even found Godzilla that they would not even be able to stop him anyway. It would be a waste of lives.

“If only the new weapon were ready.” Shindo thought to himself. “I wonder if IT could even stop Godzilla’s awesome power.”

Shindo had once been in charge of a “new and invincible” weapon before and it had failed miserably against Godzilla. The crash of the White Eagle had really changed his perspective on the monster. He and Prime Minister Togashi knew that some more powerful had to be created. Together they had asked for permission from the UN for this special project. Permission was given and the US and Great Britain began assisting Japan in their efforts. Engineers from these nations had begun working on operating components and the US Air Force assigned a division to study mazer technology and develop weapons systems. Shindo and Togashi were relieved to receive help from these nations. Not only would it speed things up, but it would ease world fears about the so-called “rearmament of Japan”.

“Still no word?” Shindo asked anxiously of his radio man.

“No sir, they’ve just reported that the Uraga Channel is clear.” replied the radioman

“Damn, they’d better find him soon.” Shindo muttered nervously.

Shibetsu Harbor
Hokkaido, Japan
March 6, 2006

The sun was setting over the mountain to the west, and the little fishing community was lighting up. As the darkness settled over the town, most of the fisherman and cannery workers were heading to their homes. Most were anxious to get home and see if Godzilla had been found yet. The news had already spread around the world. Godzilla had shown his face again after two years, and it was obvious that he would show it again soon. However, being on Japan’s northern coast, and with Hokkaido’s only nuclear power plant having been destroyed two years ago, no one figured that Godzilla would come to their little town. And they were right. Soon the night life came out. The bars began to fill up with workers ready to enjoy some sake or beer.

The waters in the harbor became choppier and choppier. Boats began to sway up and down as the waves came in. It wasn’t just waves though, the water was trembling. Something was rumbling underground, and it was disturbing the seas.

A young boy and his girlfriend had sneaked out of their houses to see each other. They planned a rendezvous by the docks, knowing that no one would be around to catch them. The two of them looked out at the ocean, sitting there, hand in hand, enjoying the scenery. Just then, over the horizon, two white waves spouted in opposite directions from one point, then two more, then two more, each time getting closer. It was as if something was moving under water. The two teenagers stood there frozen with fear. Finally the girl broke free and ran, the boy soon followed. It was at that moment that the ground began to shake. The waves split in the middle of the harbor and washed over the fishing boats.

Everyone was now aware something was going on. Some braced themselves under tables; others went out into the streets to see if the earthquake was cause by Godzilla. No one had an answer. The rumbling continued, now the road leading through town caved into the earth while the buildings around it fell into the crevice left behind by the moving earthquake. Over all the noise, a loud honking type noise rang out in the town. The trail of destruction continued southward.

Kaiju Tactical Force Headquarters
Hachioji, Japan
March 6, 2006

It was now 11:30pm. Three battleships of the self defense force had been searching for Godzilla since 4 pm. Every minute that ticked away made General Shindo even more nervous. Finally, Dr. Asoka Tonogashi came in and interrupted the general’s silence. Ever since she had discovered the pera mutation Doragah two years ago, she had studied samples of him and Godzilla that were left in Tokyo. The higher ups now viewed her as an expert on “strange creatures”.

“General,” she said loudly, “I know why Godzilla is not in the Uraga Channel. He’s heading for food. The only nuclear power plant left in the country is at Toki.”

“So you think he’ll head for the plant in Toki.” the general asked.

“Yes,” replied Asoka, “if you move your search to the east coast of Japan you should find him. I only wish I would have thought of it earlier.”

The general stood up and looked across the room with an empty stare. He seemed to be processing what the doctor had just told him, wondering if he should go with his gut or believe her. Who was he to question her; she was the only expert they had on these monsters.

“Alert the fleet,” the general ordered the radioman, “tell them to begin searching along the east coast of Japan, between Cape Nojima and Toki.”

“Yes sir.” replied the radioman.

Before the radioman could relay the message, the loud speaker rang out with a loud shrill voice.

“General Shindo, we’ve just received a distress call from an oil tanker in the Pacific. It seems they were attacked by a large creature moving underwater. The call came from a point about fifty miles east of Mito in Ibaraki. The creature was moving north toward Toki.” the voice cried out.
“We’re too late.” Asoka cried out.

“No,” the general said sharply, “we have three battalions stationed in Toki for this event. They are waiting for Godzilla. We couldn’t decommission the Toki plant until there was a pera plant to replace its existence, so we knew that Godzilla would eventually come to the last nuclear plant in Japan. That is why we stationed them there. We also have our Eagle division of F-15’s ready to provide air support.”

“But we all know those won’t work on him,” Asoka sighed impatiently; “he’ll just crush them and kill soldiers.”

“We do have something else waiting for him,” the general replied to the frustrated woman. “You see, the United States has been developing weapons for Project K, the new super weapon. Well they have completed R&D on two weapons already and have given them to us to apply to some of our domestic military vehicles.”

Dr. Tonogashi looked at Shindo curiously. She now knew he had something up his sleeve, she just hoped it was good.

The general continued. “Using the Mazer technology that the US has given us, we’ve developed a high powered Mazer Tank. The M-1 is equipped with a single Mazer cannon, to make it light weight. The cannon can turn 360 degrees, and the main body on the tank is reversible, like a turn table to make it more maneuverable. Next is the Armor Piercing missiles they’ve given us, These mount in an ordinary missile launcher, but they have the power to pierce through substances 10 times thicker than ordinary missiles.”

Dr. Tonogashi breathed a sigh of partial relief, “Well, I hope this works.”

Ibaraki Nuclear Facility
Toki, Japan
March 7, 2006

It was 12:45am, as the tanks and military vehicles began arriving on the beach. Godzilla was only a half hour away. Sirens blared through the city of Toki. The evacuation was going very orderly though. The citizens of Toki almost expected this to happen, so many had prepared and the rest had just moved out of town months ago. The Type 90 tank units lined up along the beach. The M-1 Mazer tanks lined about thirty meters behind them. Off in the distance, the rocket launchers were being loaded with the Armor Piercing missiles. They maintained a distance of 500 meters from the shore. They were able to attack from long distances, making them easier to camouflage and attack Godzilla.

Over head, the First Eagle division of F-15s flew over head and split their formation to make the round again. The search lights clicked on and began to shine out over the sea. The Second Eagle division of F-15s flew over the future battle ground. All was quiet except for the sound of the jets that flew overhead.

Just then, one of the search lights caught a swell in the water. The swell was moving rapidly toward the shoreline. Two pointed dorsal fins poked out of the top of the swell and finally Godzilla’s head rose from the sea. Godzilla let out a roar of challenge; almost instinctively he knew he’d have to fight for his dinner. The F-15s moved in for the attack. They intended to lure Godzilla back out to sea, but there was only one thing on the monster king’s mind. He was hungry.

At once the five F-15s of the first line fired sidewinder missiles at Godzilla. The missiles struck the monster just as the jets began a vertical climb to avoid hitting him. The next wave came and the sidewinders struck the monster in chest. The monster became increasingly annoyed at the little flies that were attacking him. He swung his arms violently trying to swat the planes that he could no longer see due to the smoke. Before the smoke could clear, more sidewinders struck the monster’s chest. This time Godzilla retaliated with his atomic fire. A streak of blue light lit up the sky as the monster hit one of the planes from the next line. The flaming wreck crashed right at the monster’s feet causing even more confusion for him. This time when the jets attacked, they flew by the monster, hoping he would follow them. Unfortunately, it wasn’t working. Godzilla continued toward the shore. The Eagle’s made the round and got back into attack position. This time, the Sparrow missiles launched from the jets as they flew by the monster. Each one struck Godzilla head on in the face. Using the tactics they had learned two years ago during their navy battle with the beast, the pilots were going to try to temporarily blind Godzilla.

With Godzilla’s head engulfed in smoke, the line of twenty Type 90 tanks in the front row opened fire at once. The continuous fire power from the tanks and the jets confused and angered Godzilla even more. The jagged dorsal fins on Godzilla’s back flickered with blue light, but before the monster could use his most deadly weapon, the M-1’s open fire. Five beams of blue, jagged light raced toward the monster and struck him in the neck. Godzilla stumbled backwards. For the first time, one of man’s weapons had hurt the beast. The mazers continued their attack, sending shocks all across Godzilla’s body.

It was then that the order was given. Tank fire was to concentrate on the head, while the Eagle division was to get clear. It was time to fire the armor piercing missiles. Seven projectiles launched from behind the tree line behind the beach. Each missile was running a straight course for their target. All seven missiles hit Godzilla in the chest, sending chunks of his flesh flying through the air.

Godzilla, still blind let out another roar of rage and pain. Something had pierced his flesh, and he couldn’t see it. The mazers began attacking the spot where the missiles had hit, hurting the monster more. Godzilla let out another roar; he was getting angrier and angrier by the minute. He just wanted dinner. Blue light danced along his jagged dorsal fins once again, this time shooting randomly at the ground. The beach exploded as the pure energy beam rained down on it. Finally the beam struck the first row of Type-90 tanks. The constant fire at the King of the Monster’s face had stopped. He could now see his attackers.

The Mazers adjusted their aim and charged up for another attack. The monster noticed the movement and prepared an attack of his own. Still knee deep in water, the monster continued to wade ashore as the new weapons opened fire on him once again. As the mazers struck his face, the monster cried out in pain. Just then another round of armor piercing missiles struck the monster in the legs. The beast stumbled from the injury he had just received. As he fell Godzilla turned and crashed on the beach. All attacks stopped at once.

As the hum of the machines from the Mazer tanks died down, all eyes were on Godzilla. The command came again to resume fire. As the mazer began to strike the back and dorsal plates of Godzilla, the blue light flickered from them again. Godzilla’s massive tail swung out as he stood up, taking out all five of the Mazer tanks.

Once again the jagged dorsal plates on Godzilla’s back lit up and atomic fire spewed from his mouth. This time it was aimed at the tree line where the missiles that tore his skin came from. As the Eagle division regrouped to retaliate, they got the order to retreat. The battle was lost, and Godzilla was heading for the nuclear plant.

Chapter 4

Kaiju Tactical Force Headquarters
Hachioji, Japan
March 7, 2006

It was now 8a.m. No one on the Kaiju Tactical Force had been able to sleep. Godzilla had destroyed the last remaining nuclear reactor in Japan. Shindo continued to watch the big screen in the main control room showing the fire fighters trying to put out the fires on the beach and the pile of rubble that used to be the power plant.

Suddenly the doors opened and in walked Dr. Tonogashi. Following her was Dr. Koichi and his linguistics expert Hiroshi. They had been brought in to shed light on where Godzilla might be, but had been of little help to predict Godzilla’s location.

“Sir,” Asoka said to the general, “I think you should see these pictures.”

Then general tried to wipe the look of exhaustion off of his face. He glanced at the pictures the anthropologist had taken on Sakano Island. The general flipped through the pictures of Godzilla on the island. He was unimpressed, until he saw some pictures of another creature. A creature that in some pictures was on all fours, and some stood bipedal. He had a large row of spikes down his back and a menacing face.

“Just what the hell is this thing?” asked the general gruffly.

“That is a Varanopode,” replied Asoka, “a species thought to be extinct for millions of years. For some reason or another, it has managed to survive in the valley of Sakano Island.”

“Yes,” replied Dr. Koichi, “the valley was sealed off, and only a certain few were allowed in to go hunt. Apparently there was a lake in there. I can only suppose that there are underwater caverns in there where he could have hid all this time.”

The general looked puzzled now.

“So what exactly do you think brought Godzilla to that island?” he asked.

“Well,” Dr. Koichi replied, “I’m not sure; he showed up the minute that Varan had started attacking the village. He was drawn to the island like a magnet.”

“It could have been Godzilla’s territorial nature kicking in.” Dr. Tonogashi added. “He might sense the presence of opponents and his unusually aggressive nature forces him to seek out and destroy these opponents.”

“Sir,” a voiced called out across the room, “we’ve got an emergency feed coming in to us.”

“Put it on the big screen.” the general called out.

The big screen’s image now changed from the situation in Toki, to a scene in Hokkaido. A large trench had cut through the middle of the small town of Shibetsu. It had continued south destroying the Hokkaido forests and the farmlands.

“What could have caused such destruction?” asked the general, seemingly unsurprised by what he saw.

The last of the massive fossil had arrived yesterday evening. Now that it was deemed safe and unexposed to the outside elements, the crews including Dr. Hart and Dr. Kamichi had finally gotten to rest. Now, however, it was back to work. They now were studying the first specimen of an Anguriosaurus ever found.

One thing troubled Rachael, all carbon dating done on all of her samples proved that the monster had died only 100 years ago. This continued to puzzle her and her colleague Dr. Kamichi.

Asama yama, Japanese Alps
Nagano Prefecture, Japan
March 7, 2006

There were about twenty men that had been left behind to disassemble the “tent town” that had been created by all the researchers. As they continued to collapse every tent in the compound, the earth began to rumble.

“Thunder in the distance men,” the foreman called out, “let’s get these things taken care of, a storm’s commin.”

The rumbling got closer as the men worked even faster now. Then the ground began to shake beneath them. The crew watched in awe as boulders came rolling down Mt. Asama yama. Finally, an explosion of dirt, rocks, debris flew from the bottom of the pit.

Out of the pit rose a large spike, and a crown of seven horns. Right below them two eyes peered out of the dust cloud. The creature let out a honking roar to announce its arrival. As it climbed out of its hole, a large shell with hundreds of spikes followed it. Lastly, its tail emerged. It was a long tail and lined with even more spikes. It bellowed another roar as it searched the area for the fossil of its dead relative.

“Anguirus!” one of the crew men cried out.

With that, they tried to run, but Anguirus noticed them out of the corner of his eye. With movement unparalleled to his size, the monster swiftly turned and swiped his tail across the former compound and killed the crew instantly.

The creature continued to call out his cry, and search the area. Finally unsatisfied, it burrowed once more and this time headed east.

The flames had finally died down. All that remained of the beach where just ashes of the trees and the village and the charred, smoking body of Varan. The fires had not spread to the valley thanks to the rocky mountains that surrounded it.

The body of Varan began to twitch. The monster was still alive, and something new was pumping in his blood. The monster was quickly gaining energy. Godzilla’s heat beam had mutated the monster and now the radiation was making him stronger. His arms began to move and finally, his eyes opened. The monster let out a short grunt, followed with a longer one.

Varan picked himself up on all fours and let out a roar of defiance against the monster that had tried to kill him. But he was nowhere to be found. The creature called out and called out, but got no response. The monster began to climb the mountain on all fours. It did not take him long to reach the top. Once at the top, Varan stood on his two hind legs and spread his arm to reveal a thin membrane. With even more force than before, the gas expelled from Varan’s pores allowing him to fly. As the monster flew higher and higher in the sky, he resembled a flying squirrel. The monster was headed north to find his attacker.

March 7, 2006

Godzilla lay in his usual trench. The monster had made it his home. He enjoyed it here, it was deep in the ocean, were few could bother him. It was also cold which assisted the monster king in his hibernation. His hunger had been satisfied this morning and there was no need for him to be about. Just as the beast began his long sleep that he had so long waited for, his eye flashed open. Once again, he was sensing a presence. This one was new. It was not like the beast he had once fought before. Godzilla lifted himself out of his trench and headed north.

Chapter 5

Kaiju Tactical Force Headquarters
Hachioji, Japan
March 7, 2006

Hiroshi sat silently in his chair while half of the people in the base were trying to find Godzilla and the other half was trying to find the mysterious moving earthquake. The earthquake had started in Hokkaido and had moved south to Asama yama, and then turned east.

But neither Godzilla nor the earthquake was on Hiroshi’s mind. All he could think about was the fact that all the natives of Sakano Island were dead. He and his boss were the first to be let into their community to study them. Had their presence cursed the natives of that island? If they had not gone, would Varan still have come from the valley, and would Godzilla have sensed him and come to the island? These questions plagued Hiroshi terribly. After learning their language, Hiroshi felt closer to the natives; he felt as if he was one of them in a way. He was the only person in the world outside of their island that could understand them. His thoughts were interrupted when his friend and colleague, Dr. Koichi walked in the room.

“Still shaken by our encounter?” the young anthropologist asked. “Well don’t worry, we made it out alive.”

“I only wish we could say the same for the natives of that island.” Hiroshi replied grimly. “They weren’t so lucky. Did you ever wonder if we were responsible for their fate in some way? Varan had never come out of that valley until we got there. And yet, we are the only two to survive. I feel guilty.”

“You shouldn’t,” replied Dr. Koichi, “because there is a reason we were saved. We just have to find it.”

Just then, the alarms went off again.

“I wonder if they found Godzilla!” Dr Koichi said excitedly as he ran out of the room.

“Sir we’ve spotted a UFO!” cried a voice from the other side of the control room.

“Do we have visual?” the general asked.

“No sir, but radar shows it descending rapidly.” the operator said from across the room.

“Calculate its landing point and scramble the Eagle division to that location. I want helicopter surveillance on the landing site. Evacuate any civilians within a 20 kilometer radius.” General Shindo ordered. “And finally, contact the Prime Minister.”

Just then, the phone at the general’s work station rang. The general sighed and answered. As the person on the other line spoke, all eyes were on the general as his expression looked more and more worried by the second.

“That was the Nemura Maru,” Shindo started, “they’ve found Godzilla, and he’s heading for the Uraga Channel.”

Pacific Ocean
25 Kilometers South of the Uraga Channel
March 7, 2006

The Nemura Maru had been pursuing Godzilla for about an hour now. He had not come to the surface but his radar signal was still strong. He was swimming in a straight line so he obviously knew where he was going.
Captain Takado Fujita was in command of the vessel. Unfortunately he had no other ships with him to attack if the monster came to the surface. Most of the JSDF battleships were lost in a battle to Godzilla two years ago. Even if he had the other two of the ships that were nearest to him, they still didn’t have enough power to launch an attack. However he had just been alerted that the Eagle division had been scrambled. They were on their way.

The JSDF knew they couldn’t defeat the beast, but they hoped they could at least turn his course away from Yokohama. If worse came to worse, they would lead him into uninhabited Tokyo.
The sun was setting now. That would make things difficult.

Oshima
Oshima Island, Japan
March 7, 2006

As the sun set, the people of the small fishing village were told to evacuate their homes. A large ocean liner was waiting at the harbor to take the people to safety. The citizens were told with the recent earthquakes, that Mt Mihara could erupt at any moment. However, they didn’t know that in reality, a UFO was expected to make a landing here. It was 10:00 pm before the last person was off the island. The island was now home to military personnel, just waiting for something.

General Shindo woke up in a cold sweat. He had finally been relieved after thirty two straight hours of being up. He didn’t sleep well, however. He had nightmares of Godzilla coming to Yokohama and lighting the city on fire. He was told that he would be contacted if anything had happened, but no one had called the phone in his quarters. No one ever came in. So he rolled over and tried to take advantage of the situation.
Colonel Tanzaki would know what to do is something happened anyway. He could always give the order for an evacuation. Yokohama was already on high alert, and the harbor areas of Tokyo Bay had already been evacuated.

In the control room, everyone was on the edge of their seats. Godzilla had surfaced at 11:30 pm and the Eagle division of the SFDF was currently fighting him. They had managed to put a complete stop to his advance. It would be ideal, but unlikely that they could turn him around.
As she watched the battle, Asoka couldn’t help but wonder why was Godzilla coming back? She would have thought that he would have had enough fuel at Toki. Plus, there was no nuclear energy left in Japan. She remembered studying the effects of pera on the nuclear cells of Godzilla’s body using the samples she collected last year. It was thought that pera may be a useful weapon against the monster, but the pera didn’t seem hinder the cell division at all. In fact it seemed to speed it up, but she couldn’t be sure as of yet. But if that was the case, then Godzilla could be attracted to pera energy as well.

The screen lit up as Godzilla fired his atomic breath and took out two of the F-15s fighting him. Again he fired upon his enemies and took out two more. The battle continued, while everyone watched silently.

Another flash of light, and the battle was over. Godzilla turned and began his march once again.

As Colonel Tanzaki hung his head down in shame and remorse, a voice called out from somewhere amongst the jungle of computers.
“Colonel, Godzilla has changed course,” she said with a tone of excitement, “he’s heading for Tokyo.”

This was perfect. Troops could be equipped with safety gear and allowed to fight him on land, with minimal casualties. Tokyo was still abandoned due to the dangerous contaminated air. With any luck, the mazers and armor piercing missiles could send him back into the bay.

Just then, General Shindo walked into the room.
“General, we lost the battle,” the colonel explained, “but Godzilla is now heading for Tokyo instead of Yokohama.”

“This is good,” the general said with relief, “we can fight him on land with our more advanced weapons. Keep Unit A deployed in Yokohama harbor. I want all other land units to gear up and head for Tokyo.”

“Yes sir!” the colonel saluted and went off to carry out the orders.

“Now, how about the situation on Oshima Island,” the general asked, “any word yet?”

“Nothing yet sir,” the radioman reported, “but the UFO should have landed about thirty minutes ago.”

The soldiers waited impatiently for the arrival of their “visitor”. Some were speculating aliens, some said it would be a satellite that fell from space, and some even thought it was a spy plane. Finally the object showed up on the radar. It had slowed its descent significantly. The search lights scanned the sky to find it. Finally the light caught it.
As Varan fell from the sky, the soldiers ran to their stations and prepared to open fire on the beast.

“General Shindo, we’ve got video feed from Oshima Island.” the radioman announced.

The big screen split; one side showing Godzilla, the other showing the events taking place on Oshima Island. The general and everyone in the room watched as the monster set down in the middle of the little fishing town, crushing about 5 houses as he did. The monster looked around and bellowed out a roar of challenge.

“That’s Varan!” Dr. Kamichi called out.

General Shindo calmly gave the order, “Order all units to fire at will.”

Oshima Island

The Apache helicopters that had been hovering above the island found their target and unleashed their AGM-114 Hellfire anti-tank missiles. The missiles struck their target. Varan looked around for his attacker, but was blinded by the search lights. Again the choppers fired upon him and again the missiles struck his chest. Varan cried out in frustration. Next the helicopters fired their Hydra 70 rockets at him. The rockets struck the beast in the head causing him more confusion, but no pain. Finally, realizing that he couldn’t fight back, Varan unleashed the gas from his pores, spread his membrane and took off again, continuing his track north. He sensed nuclear energy, and was heading for Tokyo.

Chapter 6

National Paleontology Research Center
Yokohama, Japan
March 8, 2006

Even though the city was on full alert, Dr. Hart and Dr. Kamichi just couldn’t pull themselves away from their work. They wanted to know why their dinosaur was still alive one hundred years ago. They were the only two in the building; many people in Yokohama had taken to the streets, even though Godzilla was now heading for Tokyo.

“Rachael, I may have found something.” Dr. Kamichi called out from behind his computer screen.

Rachael Hart walked over to meet her friend and colleague. It felt good to work together after spending so much time apart. She began to have familiar feelings for him that she had had before.

“You see this,” Kamichi pointed at the computer, “it’s an old story about an underground earthquake that moved. They say that it traveled from the Northern Sea to the Japanese Alps. It says that the earthquake finally stopped when it got to Asama Yama in 1912.”

Rachael looked at Toshio Kamichi, “So you think this earthquake has something to do with Anguirus?”

“Well,” the Japanese paleontologist said hesitantly, “do you think it’s possible that Anguirus was just burrowing underground, causing the earth to quake. When he got to Asama Yama, he finally died maybe. That could have been how he survived all this time, by living underground. And if there were younger ones around at that time, then they might still be……”

Before Dr. Kamichi could finish his thought, the earth began to shake. Immediately the two looked out of the nearby window and saw three large buildings collapse about a mile away.

Out of the rubble rose a crown of horns that sat above a head with a snout. At the end of the snout was another horn. The creature had a shell lined with hundreds of spikes, and a long tail with even more spikes lining it. It wasn’t long before the two paleontologists realized that they were staring at the same creature that they were studying.

“As I live and breathe,” Toshio exclaimed, “it’s a real, live Anguirus!”

“Do you think it came because it knows that we have the fossil here?” Dr. Hart asked of her colleague.

Before her friend could answer, they saw Anguirus belt out a honk sounding roar and turn straight for the Paleontology lab.

“We’d better get out of here!” Toshio exclaimed as he watched Anguirus move with great speed, taking out buildings in its path.

Kaiju Tactical Force Headquarters

“General Shindo, we’ve got another monster in Yokohama.” cried the radioman. “It came from underground. It may have been the cause of the recent moving earthquakes.”

“Damn it!” cursed the General, “Alert all ground units to redeploy to Yokohama, we’ll have to let Godzilla do as he pleases in Tokyo. Make sure and assist the people in the evacuation.”

At that moment another voice called out to the general. “GODZILLA’S IN TOKYO BAY!!!”

Tokyo Bay

Godzilla’s head surfaced once again as he entered the shallower waters of Tokyo bay. Apache helicopters raced by the King of the Monsters, but did not attack. Godzilla watched them go by and continued on his course, letting out a roar of defiance. It was then that he sensed something. An enemy was nearby. Letting out another roar, Godzilla turned to the west and began to head directly toward Yokohama.
The ground troops along the harbor awaited their orders.

KTF

General Shindo watched as Godzilla suddenly changed his course. He immediately ordered the harbor troops to fire at will.

Yokohama harbor

A mixture of tank artillery and armor piercing missiles were fired immediately upon Godzilla. The artillery did little but annoy, but the missiles did their job effectively as chunks of Godzilla’s skin went soaring in the air and landed in the water. The mazer units opened fire, once again trying to take advantage of the wounds created by the missiles.

The monster king cried out in pain as the blue beams of energy struck his fresh wounds. He didn’t know this sensation very well. It was rare that the monster’s skin was pierced. The pain of the attack and frustration of not being able to meet his enemy built up inside of him. Blue light flickered down the three rows of jagged dorsal fins on Godzilla’s back. He opened his mouth to release his weapon just as a mazer fired in it. Godzilla cried out in pain and lost his balance temporarily.

As he regained his balance he charged up his beam once more and fired it before he sustained anymore damage. The entire harbor area lit up in simultaneous explosion. Fire engulfed all of the military units that had just stood in his way. With that annoyance taken care of, the monster king waded ashore.

*****************************************************************
Meanwhile, the other ground troops had just come back from Tokyo to do battle with Anguirus. They had managed to stop the monster in its tracks, so that civilians could evacuate.

People were panicking and trying to flee from the monster that stood before them. Some got trampled as they stumbled. Loved ones were separated from each other. A little girl stood at the entrance of a building crying, while her mother tried to cut through the crowd and get to her daughter. The sirens could not even be heard over the sound of the explosions from the battle and the screams of the crowd. Rachael and Toshio tried desperately to stay together as they got caught in the mob of people trying to escape the terrible events unfolding behind them.
When the battle area was clear, the Apaches moved in. They fired their AGM-114 anti-tank missiles on the beast. Every missile they shot at it managed to hit its protective shell which only slowed the monster, but did not hurt it.

Mazers fired their cannons from the ground in an attempt to hit the monster in the neck. Anguirus continued to move at speeds unmatched by its size. The monster released a roar of defiance and the puny men who tried to destroy him, but his call was answered by another.
As Godzilla approached the battle scene, an even greater panic swept over those fleeing the scene. At once all of the tank units cleared out. They knew there was going to be a fight, and they didn’t want to be in the way when debris went flying.

Godzilla once again roared a challenge out to his new foe as he studied him. Anguirus did the same, looking for the best point to attack his challenger. This time Godzilla made the first move as he lunged for his prey. He had misjudged Anguirus though. Anguirus immediately spun around, smacking Godzilla in the shoulder with his tail, and embedding the spikes into his flesh. Godzilla roared in pain and fell the ground. He regained his composure and soon was back on his feet. Anguirus attacked again with his tail, but the King of the Monsters expected it this time. He ducked and immediately retaliated with his atomic breath. Before the beam of radiation could hit him though, Anguirus rolled into a ball, and leaped into the air.

As the monster bounced from city block to city block, Godzilla tried to keep his eyes on him, but finally he couldn’t. Anguirus was way too fast. Finally the spiky ball struck Godzilla in the back knocking him once again to the ground. Buildings collapsed under the tremor that Godzilla created as he hit the ground. Anguirus uncurled his body in mid air and landed back on all four feet. As he landed he turned toward his attacker and bellowed out his roar of defiance and pride in his successful attack.

Godzilla rose to his feet once again and marched toward his enemy. Anguirus did the same. Just before the two met each other, Anguirus rose to his hind legs and reached for Godzilla’s arm with his mouth. Godzilla’s high pitch cry of pain echoed through the city as Anguirus’s powerful teeth sank into his left arm. He tried to shake him off but every move that he would make made the pain more terrible. Finally Godzilla’s back began to flicker and he unleashed his atomic breath right at Anguirus’s head. Anguirus released his grip on Godzilla’s arm and cried out in pain as he fell backward.

Anguirus crashed into three large office buildings as he fell on his back. Before he could react, Godzilla’s foot came at his neck, pinning him to the ground. Anguirus couldn’t even let out the cried of pain anymore. Using his tail, he jammed a spike into Godzilla’s side, once again causing the monster king to topple over.

Using the time he had bought himself, Anguirus rolled over back onto his hind legs, rolling up into a ball once again and bouncing around the city, crushing building after building as he did it. This time Godzilla tried to catch the beast with his heat beam, but to no avail.

Anguirus once again slammed into Godzilla knocking him to the ground, and continued to roll around the city. When Godzilla got to his feet he was once again knocked to the ground. Finally the monster king rose. As he saw Anguirus’s rolled up body bouncing toward him he swift swung his body and knocked the beast with his tail. Anguirus went flying back toward the hole he had come out of.

Anguirus wasn’t about to give up though. Once again he charged with all his might and locked onto Godzilla’s left arm. Godzilla cried out in pain as the anger built up in him. Anguirus’s large razor sharp teeth continued to dig deeper and deeper into Godzilla’s body. More cries of anguish escaped the monster king’s mouth. He tried to free his arm from the angry monster that had a lock on it but just made the pain worse. Finally blood began to pour from the wounds inflicted in his arm.

As he got angrier, the nuclear material running through his body began to be replaced by the pera he had absorbed two years ago. Under stressful conditions, his body seemed to utilize this energy and make the monster stronger. Flashes of blue and green light emitted from Godzilla’s body and seemed to rotate around him. Anguirus could not hold on any longer. The energy surrounding Godzilla’s body expelled Anguirus to the ground. Blue and yellow lightening danced along Godzilla’s dorsal fins. Godzilla discharged his heat beam but this time it was blue with large sparks of yellow in it.

The buildings surrounding Anguirus exploded with tremendous force. Anguirus turned onto his four legs again. Surrounded by fire, Anguirus cried again at his opponent. The King of the Monsters once again let out his newly charged heat beam, sending even more city blocks up in flames.

Anguirus, realizing that he had been defeated, let out a final cry of anguish and headed back for the hole that he had crawled out of. As he fell into the hole, Godzilla released one more blast of his atomic fire to finish off the beast. The hole was now engulfed in flames and Godzilla could not be more satisfied. Godzilla roared triumphantly as most of Yokohama lie in ruins.

Chapter 7

Kaiju Tactical Force Headquarters
March 8, 2006

As General Shindo watched Godzilla basking in his victory on the large screen, he could only wonder, “Is there no creature that can stop Godzilla?” Godzilla’s roar rang out through the speakers and echoed across the control room. Well it was time for action; once again, Godzilla was in Japan’s capitol city, even relocated. The general stood to get everyone’s attention as he gave his new orders.

“I want the mazer units to keep a three city block distance from Godzilla. Order them to get ahead of him and lure him into Tokyo. I want a trap set up in Shinjuku. I want air support, and all tank units to assemble in the park. All armor missile units maintain distance from the battle but keep in range. Surround Godzilla. The area is still a mess, so there shouldn’t be any major loss if we fight it there.”

As the general finished giving his orders, everyone in the room sprung into action. It was soon that the message was relayed.

Yokohama

Godzilla was enjoying his victory as the fires roared around him. He sensed something in the air though. Energy. It was a faint trace of nuclear energy, but also something new he craved. To get it, he had to go back to a place he’d been before. Before he could move though, the beam from a carefully hidden mazer shot the beast right in the chest. It was however in the direction he needed to go. This could work for him.
Godzilla began to follow the beam of light as it randomly shot short bursts at him. Another one shot at him, this time from a different direction. The short bursts weren’t as painful as the prolonged shots that usually hit him so he didn’t bother with them. The monster simply let out a warning roar to his opponents on the ground and kept on his way toward Tokyo. Little did he know that he was walking right into the general’s trap.

**********************************************************************

Rachael Hart and Toshio Kamichi carefully walked out from the subway that they had been hiding in. The sounds of the battle had stopped. They also heard as Godzilla walked away.

“Do you think he killed Anguirus?” Rachael asked

“I hope not,” Toshio replied, “I’d love to have that living specimen for study. Not for just paleontology studies, but perhaps aid in the studies of these monsters we keep seeing.”

The two walked carefully through the rubble of the now decimated city. Most buildings were no longer in one piece, and the rubble filled the streets making them dangerous to traverse. Nothing was even recognizable anymore. They had no idea where in Yokohama they were. As they turned down one street the scene was the same. A fire hydrant was spewing water in the air, power lines were hanging over the streets and the rubble, arching electricity and flailing wildly.

As they walked down the street, they began to see charred corpses of the unlucky people who couldn’t find shelter. The smell of the burning flesh filled the air and it was unpleasant. The two could hardly breathe as the smoke from the raging fires filled their lungs.

Toshio looked around. Over the sound of the flames, he thought he heard thunder. He looked around and saw Rachael doing the same thing. They both looked in the air and saw lights coming from behind the large plumes of smoke. Finally they recognized what they saw; helicopters. The military had already begun rescue operations. Frantically the two waved their hands in the air, hoping to be noticed and rescue.

Just then a loud voice called over a speaker mounted on the chopper. “Move to the next block, there is an open area where we can pick you up.”

**********************************************************************

Godzilla continued on his path north. He smashed into buildings and overpasses with no regard. The mazers continued their attempt to lure him into Tokyo, completely unaware that the monster would head that way regardless.

Godzilla’s defiant roar rang out once again as the mazer’s short blast hit him. Another explosion erupted from below as the monster’s foot smashed through another building.

The mazer units had a plan mapped out to lure the monster. To minimize the damage to buildings that are still in good shape they would try to route the monster into the districts he had destroyed two years ago. Their first stop would be Shinagawa. From there they would lead him through Minato and finally to Shinjuku.

**********************************************************************

Shinjuku City Park

It was dark and quiet in the park. It was quite eerie since the city had been abandoned for two years. Shinjuku was now a ghost town. The massive skyscrapers that overlooked the park for over a decade were still just a massive pile of rubble. There weren’t even any animals. Nothing could survive the toxic air that hung over the city. It was only the protective gear that the soldiers were wearing that kept them from slow and painful death.

The search lights in the distance continued to comb the skies. Nothing could be seen however. Just then a bright flash of light appeared in the distance. The commander peered through his binoculars. It was Godzilla. He was marching toward them through what used to be Minato. The mazer tanks were still shooting short blasts at the creature, drawing him into the trap that they hoped would do him in for good.

After what seemed like hours of waiting, the monster was in range. Just a few more steps and he would be in the park and they could spring the trap. Once again the commander peered through his binoculars to examine the beast. He appeared to have no weak points.

Godzilla’s roar rang out, as if to call out to the troops that he knew were there. He took a few steps closer as he absorbed the radiation that he had left behind. It wasn’t only radiation though; something else was entering his body. He hadn’t felt this since his battle two years ago. A strange sustenance but it satisfied him none the less.

The monster took two more steps. The monster king’s roar echoed once more through the ghost city, sending chills down the backs of all that were about to oppose him. The beast finally got in the most advantageous spot.

“FIRE AT WILL!” the commander called out.

All at once cannons, rockets, armor piercing missiles and mazers opened up with a constant barrage. Explosions rang out over the monster king’s body at he roared once again. Chunks of skin flew from the beast as the armor piercing missiles did their job once again. The mazers continued to torture the nerve endings in Godzilla’s body.

Godzilla began to feel pain once again. The large protruding dorsal fins on the monster’s back began to flicker with blue light. Just as the beast opened his mouth to discharge his heat beam, a rocket from an F-15 went right in and exploded. A high pitch wail that sounded like nails on a chalkboard came from the monster’s mouth as he lost his balance and stumbled a bit.

Realizing that the monster might use his atomic breath at any time, the squadron of F-15s that had just joined the battle decided to blind the beast as they had done in the previous battles with him. The sidewinders leaped from their chutes and began a course straight for the monster.
Godzilla was now confused. He could not tell what directions the attacks were coming from. Explosions continued to ring out all over his body including his back. Mazers were concentrating fire at the monster’s chest wounds from the armor piercing missiles.

Kaiju Tactical Force Headquarters

As the battle raged on, General Shindo couldn’t be happier. The battle had been going on for about thirty minutes and not a single loss of life had been reported. He was confident that after his battle with Anguirus, the monster would soon tire and the battle would finally be won.

Dr. Asoka Tonogashi sat further down the large control panel at the top of the room. As she watched the battle, she was less enthusiastic. She knew deep down that Godzilla would prevail somehow. Anger seemed to bring out even more strength that was hidden deep down in him.

“Sir we’ve got Varan on radar again.” a voice called from the radar station.

“Where is the estimated landing point this time?” Shindo barked back.

“Tokyo, somewhere around the Shibuya district.” the radar man replied.

“Well general,” Asoka said, “you’d better hope Godzilla dies soon because if he senses that monster, history tells us there will be a fight, and your trap will be ruined.”

Shinjuku

The King of the Monsters was facing military might unlike any he had ever come across before. They had time to prepare in his two year absence, and for once, they had the upper hand.

Another armor piercing missile struck the monster, this time in the knee. With that Godzilla lost his balance and began to fall straight down to earth. The earthquake that followed stopped the attack momentarily, but as soon as the tremors stopped, the units opened fire once more.
Cries of pain continued to ring out of the monster’s mouth as the artillery bombarded him. The most painful being the mazer. Every strike from the mazer seemed to pinch every single nerve in his body.

More F-15s flew over head and delivered their payload of Sidewinders, Sparrows, and AMRAAMS. The next wave, having already exhausted all its rockets, used their Gatling guns to get more shots on the beast. The monster, finally becoming exhausted from trying to fight his adversaries closed his eyes and took the beating that was coming to him.

**********************************************************************

Dr. Hart and Dr. Kamichi peered out of the helicopter window and saw the smoke clouds and explosions in the distance coming from Shinjuku. They watched as a bright explosion lit up the sky over the city.

“What’s going on over there?” asked Rachael Hart.

The Copilot turned and explained to her, “There’s a massive battle going on in Shinjuku Park right now. They’ve lured Godzilla there and they’ve managed to pin him down.”

“You think it’ll work?” Rachael asked her colleague and friend Dr. Kamichi.
He did not answer. He stared at the pit from which Anguirus had first come from and where he was buried. He stared at it until he though he saw some of the rubble shifting around.

“Could it be?” the paleontologist thought to himself, “Is Anguirus still alive down there?”

**********************************************************************

Godzilla’s amazing wound healing abilities were now failing him. The monster’s body could not keep up with the constant barrage of missiles that ripped through his flesh. Every time he would heal another one would rip a hole in him and a mazer would strike it.

It was then that he sensed it. It was another presence. Another enemy was coming. It would soon be here. Godzilla’s territorial nature almost seemed to reenergize him. Blue light flashed the King of the Monster’s dorsal fins. Godzilla rose to his feat to once again face his attackers.
Before the ground troops could adjust their targeting accordingly the dorsal fins on Godzilla’s back flashed again. This time the monster’s power heat beam followed. Fire swept over what was left of Shinjuku as Godzilla made a semi circle with his heat beam. The Mazers that had kept their distance fired blindly into the wall of fire now in front of them. A few shots struck the monster king, only allowing him to find his target and fire his primary weapon once again. More of the beast’s opponents were incinerated instantly. What remained of the once magnificent force that stood before him retreated as fast as they could.

Kaiju Tactical Force Headquarters

General Shindo sat in his seat stunned by what he just saw. Once again, Godzilla’s body had overcome adversity and defeated the military forces in their moment of triumph.

“Sir,” an excitable voice called out, “Varan should be landing in Shibuya in ten minutes.”

The general sighed and replied solemnly, “I cannot allow for the loss of anymore soldiers tonight. Our forces have suffered a crippling blow. All forces retreat and maintain a safe distance. We’re going to have to let them fight it out. Hopefully, both will die.”

Shinjuku

Godzilla roared triumphantly as he stood in Shinjuku Park surrounded by fire. As the cells in his body began their miraculous repair the monster could sense his opponent getting closer. The King of the Monsters roared a challenge to his familiar foe and began the journey to meet him.

Chapter 8

Shibuya District
Tokyo, Japan
March 8, 2006

Shibuya-Ku, once known as “The Times Square of Japan”, was silent and eerie as was the rest of the city. The area was deemed unsafe two years ago and many of the magnificent structures that stood there had fallen into disrepair.

On a night like this one, the streets would be full of people, flocking to the night clubs, shopping in the high class stores, or playing at the many pachinko palaces. But now, it was a dark and uninviting place. Soon it would become a battle ground as two monsters approached its once busy and extravagant center.

The clouds continued to roll in. The moon had finally been blocked out by them and there was not a star to be seen. Some of the clouds came from the smoke in Yokohama and Shinjuku, but if it were not for that, it would have still been a cloudy night.

Suddenly the clouds parted and two feet followed by a torso broke through them. Varan had finally arrived. He was here to meet the monster that had barged into his homeland and attacked him and he soon would. The monster’s feet touched down with a crash in the middle of what used to be Shibuya’s busiest intersection. The thin membranes that stretched between the monster’s arms and legs quickly disappeared back to where they had come from.

Varan looked around, looking for his opponent. He could smell him, but could not see him. The monster tilted back his head and let out his deep roar to challenge the darkness. Again and again the monster roared out his challenge, until finally he got a response.

The King of the Monsters made himself known before he was even in site, returning the calls of Varan. He also anticipated this fight and was ready to get it over. The monster seemed to have an unending need for battle. Godzilla roared once again to challenge, and possibly intimidate his opponent.

Varan was not backing down. The radiation flowing through his body somehow had made him more aggressive than before. He roared back at Godzilla as the monster king finally came into view.

Godzilla crushed building that had been placed in his path as he had so many before that. It was the only pleasure that could hold him off until he met his opponent again. Finally he stopped. The two monsters stood there sizing each other up, deciding on the best attack strategy.
Varan cried out to Godzilla and once again the monster king returned his call. They seemed to be taunting one another. Each one was daring the other to make the first move. Finally, Godzilla made the first move. As he marched toward Varan to initiate the fight, the monster leaped into the air and landed behind Godzilla. As the road and debris crashed from the weight of the monster’s landing, he quickly turned and grabbed both of Godzilla’s arms. Godzilla was helpless as the monster held his arms behind his back. Varan struggled more and more, bending the arms in ways never meant by nature. Before he could do major harm, Godzilla managed to lash the monster with his tail.

Varan released the monster king’s arms and fell to the ground. Godzilla regained control of his arms, and tried to shake the pain out of them. Varan rose to his feet again and attacked once more, this time from the front. The monster took his razor sharp claws and dug one into Godzilla’s upper right arm and the other into his gut. Godzilla cried out in pain as the claws sank deeper into his skin. Varan roared triumphantly as he gained the upper hand once again.

Godzilla realized that he had under estimated his opponent. Lowering his head, Godzilla managed to grab Varan arm with his mouth. As Varan sunk his claws deeper into Godzilla’s skin, Godzilla sunk his teeth deeper into Varan’s arm. The monsters began to turn round and round, trying to break free from each other’s grip, knocking over the tall buildings that stood high over Shibuya as they did. Blue light began to emit from Godzilla’s dorsal plates on his back and the surge of pure energy flowing through his body was too much for Varan to handle. The Varan released his claws from Godzilla and fell into the large building behind him.

Once again Varan rose to his feet thanks to the assistance of the pores all over his body. This time Godzilla attacked first. The monster king began a ferocious attack with his claws. He swung his claws nonstop at Varan, making sure not to allow him another chance to attack. He once again upper cut the monster using his head. Varan stumbled back but regained his balance before he fell. Unfortunately for him, Godzilla had already planed his next attack. Godzilla had spun around and struck the beast with his tail, knocking him once again into a building.

The blue light flicked once again on the monster king’s back, signaling that he was about to use his heat beam. Varan had learned this from their last encounter. As Godzilla spewed out the ray of pure radiation, Varan’s pores released the burst of gas that allowed the monster to glide to safety. The gas ignited and once again caused an explosion, but this time Varan was out of harm’s way. Varan, now on all fours, crawled around between the buildings at unthinkable speed for a creature his size.

Godzilla struggled vigorously to find his opponent and kill it. Unfortunately his eyes were too slow, and before he knew it, Varan peered out from the behind the building and attacked Godzilla from behind. This time he leaped onto Godzilla’s back embedding his claws into his sides. Godzilla cried out in pain once again. He tried furiously to bat the creature off with his tail, but in that position he couldn’t get enough force to his attack.

**********************************************************************

As the helicopter landed in Hachioji, Dr. Hart and Dr. Kamichi were rushed into the hospital that was already jam packed with refugees waiting to be checked out. Many people looked in about the same shape as they were. Some had bruises and scrapes, and others were worse off. Nurses and Doctors were running all over the place, frantically trying to see to the injured and the maimed.

The two scientists found a place sit on the floor in the hallway. The person next to them appeared to be in bad shape. He had blood running down his face, and where there wasn’t blood was black from the ash from the burning city. His clothes were torn and through some of the various tears they could see blood running down his arms and legs as well.
Finally the man began to gasp for air as he pleaded with the two paleontologists, “Please....get...Doctor....pain......”

Then there was nothing. No air escaped his mouth. The man died right there. Rachael was stunned to see this happen. She had never seen war first hand, but this was it. She began to sob uncontrollably as in her mind she blamed herself. If they had never brought the fossil to Yokohama, perhaps Anguirus wouldn’t have come. And what if Godzilla had come only to fight Anguirus? As the thought of her and her partner being responsible for bringing two deadly monsters into the city ran through her mind, she couldn’t help but to weep uncontrollably.

Dr. Kamichi tried to console her, but in reality, he felt the same way. Plus there was the fact that he had gotten her involved in this. Finally he offered what words he could to her.

“Don’t blame yourself,” he told her, “we did what any other paleontologist on earth would have done. No one, in a million years, would have guessed that another, living dinosaur would come looking for his ancestor’s remains. So don’t blame yourself. If you must blame someone, blame me, I got you into this mess.”

“No I don’t blame you,” Rachael replied, “I just wish there was something we could do to undo all this damage.”

It was then that the television signal from the waiting room TV finally cleared and the newscaster appeared on the screen.

********************************************

We’ve received word from Shinjuku that the massive military strike led against Godzilla has failed. The monster has moved to the old Shibuya ward where he is currently engaged in battle with another monster. This one, that the government has named Varan, is different from the creature that he fought earlier tonight in Yokohama. At present the monster appears to have the upper hand. The military is holding off any attacks and are hoping that this monster can stop Godzilla once and for all. They seemed to have adopted the policy “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
Just then, Toshio Kamichi’s eyes lit up. Rachael noticed it and couldn’t believe that she saw a spark of hope in his face.

“What’s up?” she asked.

“This monster may not be able to handle Godzilla on his own, but if Anguirus joined the fight, then maybe they could defeat Godzilla.” Toshio said excitedly.

“But Anguirus is dead,” Rachael replied, “we saw Godzilla kill him.”

“I don’t think he’s dead,” Toshio said optimistically, “as we flew over the battle site I saw him moving around in the rubble. He’s alive, but probably subdued.”

He got up and approached one of the soldiers standing guard at the door.
“Sir?” he said to him, “Where is the base of operations for the disaster?”
The soldier didn’t even bother to meet his stare. “That is classified information, SIR!”

“Well can I at least speak to your commanding officer?” he pleaded, “I think the monster that appeared in Yokohama tonight is still alive, and I think we may be able to use that to our advantage.”

The soldier reluctantly called for his superior. When he showed up, Dr. Kamichi explained who he was and what his plan was. The officer called for a jeep and asked that Dr. Kamichi and Dr. Hart be escorted to KTF.

**********************************************************************

Godzilla had been struggling for some time now trying to get Varan off of his back. Finally the monster just gave up and threw himself on the ground. The impact of the landing forced Varan to release his grip, but not before ripping chunks of flesh from Godzilla’s body. Once again Varan lunged at Godzilla, this time he bit into the monster king’s left shoulder. Godzilla’s dorsal fins flickered with blue and white light as the monster charged up his heat bean. The King of the Monsters released his heat beam striking Varan in the back along the row of fluorescent spikes that scaled it.

Varan fell once again to the ground crying in pain. As the monster lay there on his back, Godzilla’s foot came down upon his lower jaw smashing it shut. Again Godzilla slammed his mighty foot into his opponent’s lower jaw. As he came down with his foot a third time, Varan grabbed the foot with his claws and fought the force of the beast. Varan struggled to gain control of the monster king’s foot, and finally he lodged his razor sharp claws into Godzilla’s ankle. Godzilla lost the balance of the other foot and tumbled onto Varan.

As Godzilla rolled off of Varan’s body, Varan turned over and tried to pin the monster king to the ground. He crawled on top of him and once again sunk his claws into his body this time scratching and ripping at Godzilla’s skin. Shrill cries of pain spilled from Godzilla’s mouth. Godzilla clenched his mighty claws and slammed his fist right into Varan’s face knocking the beast off of him.

The King of the Monsters rose to his feet once again, but Varan had disappeared once again. Varan crept through the maze of buildings on all fours trying to confuse Godzilla. This time Godzilla managed to find him early and discharge his heat beam. The buildings around Varan exploded sending debris tumbling down on top of him. Again Godzilla discharged his beam, this time into a skyscraper that lie just behind Varan. The top of the enormous building came crashing down, burying the monster in a pile of steel and concrete.

Godzilla roared victoriously. The King of the Monsters almost appeared to be laughing at his opponent’s defeat. Just as Godzilla roared again, the pile of rubble exploded and Varan came gliding out directly toward the monster king. Varan crashed into the monster king knocking both of them over into the building behind him. Godzilla roared out in anger at the creature before him that refused to die.

As Varan began another assault on the monster king with his claws Godzilla reached out and grabbed the monster’s face. With his amazing strength Godzilla tossed Varan aside and rose once again to his feet. Varan rose to his hind legs once again too. This time the monsters slowly approached one another and locked into each other. Varan locked into his opponent and pushed him backward with his force. Godzilla increased the force he was using and pushed Varan backward as he locked in tighter. Finally the two monsters lost their balance and toppled over.
Godzilla quickly got back on his feet and roared a challenge for his opponent to rise. The monster rose once again to meet his challenger. The two monsters locked eyes and prepared for the next attack.

**********************************************************************

Dr. Hart and Dr. Kamichi had been rushed through security and were now being escorted down a long hallway that led only to an elevator. Three rows of door opened up as the two of them and an officer stepped into a silver elevator car. The officer swiped his badge and entered a code number into the keypad and the elevator started going down.

“I sure hope this plan of yours works.” the officer said to the two paleontologists, “because it’s our last hope against Godzilla.”

Before too much time had passed the doors slid open and the two paleontologists were escorted down a long corridor. All of the offices had their doors open and were empty.

“Where are we?” asked Dr. Rachael Hart.

“You are in the underground bunker of KTF maam.” replied the officer.

“KTF?” Toshio asked.

“Yes sir.” the officer replied. “It stands for Kaiju Tactical Force. We are a special unit that has been developed to combat these giant monsters that have been appearing. We were formed in early 2005 to defend the country and have received aid from all over the world.”

Before Toshio could ask another question, they reached the doors at the end of the hallway. Once again the officer slid his badge and entered some numbers on the keypad and the doors slid open. The two scientists were escorted into a room with what appeared to be three rows of work stations with equipment like none they had ever seen. At the front of the room were three giant screens. Presently all three were showing images of Varan and Godzilla doing battle in Shibuya.

“Doctors Hart and Kamichi, allow me to introduce General Shindo.” the officer said politely. “He is in charge of all of our operations here.”

“Pleased to meet you.” said General Shindo as he bowed in the traditional Japanese way. “So I hear you have an idea of how we can beat Godzilla using the other monster that appeared earlier.”

“Yes sir we do.” Toshio replied, “The monster that appeared in Yokohama is an Anguirosaurus, otherwise known as an Anguirus. Our research shows that the monster was actually only aggressive when he was attacked. The only reason he showed up in the city is because we found his ancestor’s fossil and brought it here to study. His aggression came out when he was attacked by the military and Godzilla.”

“But wasn’t he killed by Godzilla?” the general interrupted.

“I don’t think so.” replied Toshio. “When we were rescued by the helicopter, I saw something moving under the rubble where Anguirus was buried. I’m sure he’s alive, but I think he’s subdued now because he’s near the remains of the fossil and Godzilla is gone. But I’m sure, if we can transport a large enough piece of the fossil, like the skull, we could lure him to Shibuya.

“And it’s is your hope that Anguirus and Varan will work together to defeat Godzilla.” the general replied.

“We can only hope.” Toshio replied back.

The general thought for a while. Finally he stood up and met Toshio’s gaze.

“Okay.” he said, “It’s a long shot, but it’s the only one we’ve got.”

The two shook hands and sat down to map out their plan. Before long Toshio and Rachael were aboard a Chinook Helicopter. Two more Chinooks were following them with the soldiers that they would need to pull this off.

Chapter 9

Yokohama, Japan
March 8, 2006

As the three Chinook Helicopters flew over the rubble that used to be the Hodogaya district of Yokohama, Toshio couldn’t help but doubt his plan. Negative thoughts started racing through his head. What if Anguirus was severely injured during the fight and that’s why he didn’t rise up from the rubble? What would happen to Rachael and him if the plan failed? Was there even a piece of the fossil left in the damage? Finally his dismissed the thoughts as last minute panic.

The pilot found an open spot where all three choppers could land. It was about six hundred meters from where the National Paleontology Research Center had been. When the aircraft landed the team began their journey across the rubble and wreckage of Yokohama to find the skull of Anguirus’s ancestor.

*************************************************************************

The battle between Varan and Godzilla raged on. Not having any beam weapons, Varan had to continuously rely on his sharp claws and teeth as weapons. However his speed and agility was giving him the edge over his atomic adversary. Godzilla had the upper hand when he could find time to use his massive tail or atomic breath. However his breath wasn’t doing the damage to Varan that it had on the island.

The monsters continued the fight destroying everything in their path. Most military vehicles had left Shibuya completely. A squadron was keeping a distant eye on the battle from Tokyo Tower. However the battle had begun to leave Shibuya. The monsters would soon be in Minato and the crew would soon have to evacuate Tokyo Tower.

Godzilla lunged at his opponent, grabbing his arm and slamming him to the ground. The monster king once again began stepping on his head, slamming it into the rubble. Varan lashed out with his tail. The back end struck Godzilla’s hind leg and the florescent spikes embedded themselves into his flesh. Godzilla cried out in pain once more. Losing his balance, he stumbled away and gave Varan a chance to once again get to his feet.
Using the gas that his pores emitted, Varan began to glide over the battle field. As Godzilla finally caught his balance and the skin healed on his leg, Varan slammed into him once again. Godzilla landed on another building that had survived their wrath up to now. Once again Varan took to the sky as Godzilla got back on his feet. This time the King of the Monsters tried to take down Varan with his heat ray. He was unable to catch Varan however. The beast was just too fast. Finally Varan landed.

The mighty beast that the Sakanian natives had once called Baradagi raced to meet the King of Monsters to initiate another attack. This time, Varan aimed for the neck, clenching it in his mouth and squeezing as hard as he could. Godzilla’s cries of pain became fainter as less and less oxygen got into his lungs. Godzilla’s arms which had been flailing madly had slowed down as the monster lost energy.

As Varan bit into Godzilla he couldn’t help but absorb the radiation that he gave off. It made Varan stronger and able to keep up the fight against the monster king. As foam started to seep from Godzilla’s mouth it looked as if it might be the end for the King of the Monsters.

*********************************************************************

The Paleontologists and men from KTF had finally made it to the National Paleontology Research Center, but the doors of the building had been blocked by rubble. Finally they found that one of the large pane glass windows on the ground floor was not blocked and had even broken for them.

When they got in the damage on the inside was so great. The tremors created by the beasts’ fight had destroyed most of the specimens that they had. Large dinosaurs that had been constructed of bones had completely fallen apart and some of the bones had shattered on impact. The building itself was in bad shape. Walls had fallen, glass was broken, and some of the large steel rafters looked as if they could collapse at any time. It was dangerous for anybody to be there, but this was the only hope for Japan and possibly the world to defeat Godzilla.

Finally the two scientists realized what part of the building they were in and managed to work their way through the rubble. They moved through the large lobby of the facility and moved through the hallway toward the east wing where all research was being conducted. The Anguirus fossil had been brought back there until they learned enough about it. Once they had the data and samples they needed, it would have been brought to the museum floor for display.

However, with the destruction that the two paleontologists saw here, there was no doubt in either of their minds that the fossil was no longer completely intact. That did not matter. As long as the skull of some other large part was intact, then that could be used to lure Anguirus.
Finally they reached the research hangar. The security locks had automatically engaged when the power went out. The soldiers had to shoot the locks to get in. When the doors were finally pushed open the squad was stunned by what they saw.

As they entered the large room first thing they noticed was that the roof had caved in. There was no doubt that the fossil had been destroyed. However, if they found the piece they needed then it would be easy to air lift it out of the building.

“Alright,” said the squad leader, “let’s get to diggin.”

The crew began removing whatever rubble they could. Large chunks of concrete and steel girders lied in their way. They had to work in teams, but they were determined to move the stuff and find something.

Finally, with an excited voice, one soldier cried out, “I’VE FOUND IT!”

As the men came running to his location they saw what he had uncovered. It was a row of seven spikes that made up the crown of the skull. As the workers moved more concrete and steel they uncovered the skull, still intact. The steel that had fallen over it was bent in a fashion that it protected the skull from the wood and concrete that came down.
“Hawkeye one,” the radioman called, “we’ve found it.”

“Be sure and tell General Shindo that Phase One of our plan is successful.” the commander ordered. “Now let’s hope Phase two goes well.”

**********************************************************************

The foam continued to seep from Godzilla’s tired jaw as he struggled for air. Varan’s jaws tightened around the neck of the monster. Godzilla’s eyes rolled back in his head as the last little bit of life slipped from him. Godzilla’s rage had all but disappeared as did his will to live. However, something was happening in his body. Once again, the pera that the monster had absorbed two years ago, and from the poisonous gas in the city, began to energize him. Godzilla felt a power flow through his body that he had not felt before.

A blue light shone from Godzilla’s mouth as the foam stopped pouring out. Beams of blue light started to pulsate from Godzilla’s body. Varan could no longer resist the force. As he let go, the pulse from Godzilla’s energy sent Varan flying backward into another one Shibuya’s buildings. Godzilla roared triumphantly as he had once again cheated death.

The crew in Tokyo Tower had decided it was too dangerous to stay any longer. They started their evacuation of the tower. The commander decided that it was time to head back to Hachioji. There would be nothing more that they could do.

Once again the two monsters grappled with each other in a fight to the death. Varan and Godzilla clawed at each other endlessly. Every time it appeared one had the upper hand, the other would regain their composure and attack. Godzilla had tried the tactic that Varan had used on him. He tried to bite his neck, but the pores on Varan’s body released their gas and put such a horrible taste in Godzilla’s mouth. This was something even the monster king could not stand, so he immediately released his grip.

The monsters were now in Minato. They destroyed homes and businesses as they continued their path of destruction. Godzilla’s mighty tail once again struck Varan’s ankles sending the monster in the air and then to the ground. Varan retaliated with his tail, which managed to embed its spikes into Godzilla’s ankle and send him to the ground.

Angered, Godzilla rose once again to his feet. Once the blue light flicked on his fins, he discharged his radiation beam once again. This time the blast struck Varan directly in the chest. The monster lost his breath and lost consciousness. It appeared that Godzilla had finally won this fight

**********************************************************************

Everything was now set. The cables had been secured around Anguirus’s skull and the three helicopters were ready to tow it. The helicopter blades began to spin as the Chinooks slowly ascended into the cloudy skies of Yokohama. Everyone in the aircrafts had felt the jolt went the cables had tightened and the engines had to strain to pull the skull off of the ground.

When the choppers took to the air, they headed directly for the last spot Anguirus had been seen, which was the hole that he had originally emerged from. Dr. Toshio Kamichi could still see movement under the rubble. The monster was still alive; hopefully it was still in a condition to fight.

They flew a circle over the site and headed slowly north. There was no reaction so they made another circle. Once again there was no reaction. After they flew a third circle in attempt to lure Anguirus, it seemed that the mission had failed. As they made their fourth round and headed north, a call came over the radio.

Hawkeye one, Hawkeye one, we have confirmed response of seismic activity. The epicenter is moving north in your direction. Be advised that Godzilla and Varan are now fighting in the Minato district. Your new destination is Minato.

“Hawkeye one to base we read you loud and clear.” called the co-pilot, “We will now begin Phase Two, destination changed to Minato.”

The Chinooks began their journey to Minato and the battleground, with Anguirus following underground.

**********************************************************************

Godzilla roar over and over again, daring his opponent to rise up and fight him. The light flickered on the beast’s back as he fired his radiation beam once again at Varan. The shock did little but to make the monster flinch as he lay there unconscious.

As Varan lay there unconscious, the continuous stream of radiation that he was being exposed to was changing his body. Unknown to Godzilla, his radiation blasts were actually building Varan’s strength, even though they would hurt him at first. As the radiation affected the cells in the monster’s body, he started to gain the regeneration abilities that Godzilla possessed. The monster’s eyes opened and once again he rose to his feet.

Godzilla roared in anger at his enemy’s refusal to die. This battle had gone on long enough and Godzilla was ready to end it. Varan felt the same. With his new found strength, he wanted nothing more than revenge for the tyrant that had entered his homeland and attacked him for no reason.

Arches of what appeared to be electricity began to spark off of Varan’s arms and claws. The florescent spikes on the monster’s spikes started to glow and eerie yellowish white color. The beast was now harnessing the energy he had been draining from the King of the Monsters for so long.
Godzilla now recklessly attacked his opponent in anger. Before Godzilla could lay a claw on Varan, the monster had already sunk his claws into the monster king and began sending pulses into his sides. Every nerve in Godzilla’s body seemed to cry out with their electric signals. The King of the Monsters released his cries of pain into the empty city.

Varan continued his assault with his new found power. More and more pulses surged into Godzilla’s body, each one pinching almost every nerve in the monster king’s body. He reached out to claw at Varan, but when he connected that allowed even more of Varan’s pulses to enter his body.

At last resort Godzilla fired a short blast of his breath right into the face of Varan.

The monster lost his balance once more, but managed to prevent his tumble to the earth. Before either monster could attack again, the distant thumping sound attracted their attention. The monsters searched for the source but could not find it.

**********************************************************************
The Chinooks had made it to Minato with the skull of Anguirus in tow. The two monsters finally came into view. They were standing still, as if they were searching for something. The crew of the helicopters realized right away that they were aware of their presence and that they had better stay out of their way.

**********************************************************************

The monsters continued to search the dark cloudy skies for a sign of the thumping noise, but to no avail. They could not find the source of the noise. Then it was gone. The noise had passed and was now behind them.

It was then that the earth began to rumble. The debris on the ground began to rattle. In the distance, two large buildings collapsed into each other, and then another two buildings did the same thing. The tremors continued and got stronger until they stopped.

The monsters stood still, looking around for the source of the trembling. Neither of them knew what caused it but they knew it wasn’t their opponent. Finally the ground exploded beneath Godzilla’s feet. As the King of the Monsters collapsed face first into the ground, Varan looked on curiously as new player entered the field. Anguirus rose from the depths of the earth and released a loud, honk like battle cry.

Anguirus seemed to have no noticeable damage done to him by him and Godzilla’s previous fight. The monster rose from his tunnel and onto the surface and prepared to battle the beast that had once tried to destroy him.

*********************************************************************

As the passengers of the Chinook type helicopters flew away from the battlefield, they watched hopefully for the sign of Anguirus. They saw as Godzilla tumbled to the ground. They also saw Anguirus rise out of his tunnel. As they flew farther away, all present knew that the battle of the century was about to begin.

Chapter 10

Kaiju Tactical Force Headquarters
Hachioji, Japan
March 8, 2006

It was now 7:30 in the morning. A battle that seemed to have dragged on for days had only been going on for about twelve hours. The general sat patiently as he saw Anguirus appear on the battlefield and call out his challenge to the other two monsters that had spent the better part of all night fighting.

With a sigh the general muttered under his breath, “Best of luck to both of you.”

************************************************************************

The sun had risen over Tokyo, but it was nowhere to be seen. Hidden behind the natural overcast sky and clouds of smoke, the sun would not come out today. Many districts of Tokyo had been engulfed in fire over night as Godzilla and Varan fought it out in the city. The monsters had laid waste to the Shibuya district and had now moved into Minato where Anguirus had joined the fight.

Varan and Anguirus didn’t seem to notice one another. Both were concentrated on their common enemy. The King of the Monsters noticed both of his opponents. Although he was out numbered, his territorial nature pushed him to fight. The monsters had been examining each other and calling out battle cries for about fifteen minutes when Anguirus finally made the first move.

Curling up into a ball, the monster flung himself at Godzilla. The monster king quickly spun around, batting the spiky ball with his tail. Anguirus was flung into a residential area of Roppongi district.

Using this opportunity, Varan made his move. He lunged at Godzilla attempting to connect his claws with him again, but Godzilla was too quick. Once again he spun around and the top of his head slammed into Varan’s face knocking him to the ground.

Before Godzilla could turn around, a spiky ball slammed the monster king on the side of his head. Crying out in pain he collapsed onto one of Minato’s larger business buildings. Anguirus landed, but bounced right back up into the air. This time he landed on Godzilla while managing to spin himself. The spikes along his shell managed to tear the flesh from Godzilla’s side.

As Varan rose to his feet he noticed that the other creature seemed to be attacking Godzilla with the same determination that he was. As he headed in their direction, the spiky ball that was Anguirus came flying his way. The balled up Anguirus slammed into Varan and once again knocked him to the ground. The two monsters separated and once again got on their feet.

Instead of attack each other, the monsters called out to each other. They seemed to be communicating. Godzilla rose from the rubble and called out a challenge to his adversaries that had just formed an alliance.
Anguirus and Varan both approached Godzilla simultaneously. Anguirus reached for Godzilla’s neck with his jaws. As Anguirus locked on, Varan sunk his claws into Godzilla’s arms. The king of the monsters tried to fight off the two monsters, but now he was outnumbered. The sparks began to pulse once again into Godzilla’s body from Varan’s claws. Godzilla soon began to run short on breath as Anguirus’s jaws closed his windpipes. White foam began to ooze from his mouth. Varan and his new ally could sense victory in their grasp.

KTF Headquarters

After hours of trying, Dr. Asoka Tonogashi was able to catch a signal from one of the air sensors from the hazardous Tokyo area. The data she found was astonishing. She quickly printed out the results and headed back to the strategy room, where everyone was watching the battle unfold.

As she walked in the room, she carefully made her way up to General Shindo. Prime Minister Togashi had finally come to the base to see what strategies were available. He sat next to the general, with an obvious look of disappointment on his face, because the general had just given up and left it in the hands of the monsters.

“I think you should see this data.” Asoka interrupted the silence. She handed over the data to the general and the minister.

“This is nice and all, but you’ll have to tell us what it means.” the general replied callously.

Asoka took the graphs and began to explain what the two different lines meant. One was the poisonous air mass caused by nuclear radiation; the other was the pera poisoning that had been left in the air over Tokyo from the battles of 2004. “Now if you look here, at about midnight, just when the battle got really fierce, the amount of these elements in our air sharply dropped.”

“Ms. Tonogashi, what does this mean?” the minister asked, “The air over Tokyo will only be safe as long as a monster is attacking?”

“No, but this attack could be a mixed blessing.” the scientist explained “I believe that Godzilla came here because it was the only source of nuclear material left in his homeland, be it faint as it is. If you remember, before Anguirus showed up, he was headed directly for Tokyo. As soon as he sensed another monster, he turned and headed for Yokohama. I think his original intention was to raid Tokyo for the nuclear material that had poisoned our air. He came back to reclaim the energy he exerted two years ago.”

“Well that explained the drop in the radiation poisoning.” the general replied, “But why is the pera disappearing too.”

Dr. Tonogashi felt it was time to present her theory, although she only had a few skin cell experiments to back it up. “I think that being exposed to pera energy two years ago during the fight with Doragah made Godzilla acquire a taste for the element. He can absorb it and utilize it the same way he does nuclear energy. I think it even makes him stronger. With the way the rate of absorption is increasing, I think we are about to see a very powerful attack.”

**********************************************************************

As Godzilla’s eyes closed, his two opponents sensed victory. Finally the monster’s body went limp. Anguirus, overcome by the monster king’s weight, released his grip on his neck. Varan released Godzilla’s arms. Anguirus released his honking roar at his ally and Varan roared back as they celebrated victory over the monster that had attacked them unprovoked. Varan found the closest building and pummeled it with his tail to knock it onto the seemingly dead monster king. Anguirus followed the example and knocked over more building onto Godzilla. The monsters continuously buried the monster in steel and rebar. As the morning sun rose higher and higher, the monsters finally were satisfied with the burial that they had given their adversary.

Suddenly, a blue flash emanated from inside the concrete pile. Less than a second later the pile exploded and Godzilla rose once again from the rubble. Before the two monsters could react, Godzilla grabbed Anguirus’s tail and spun him around once before flinging him at Varan. The spikes along Anguirus’s back stabbed Varan right in his belly. Heat gathered around the monster king’s mouth as he charged a more powerful version of his heat beam. As the blue and red beam struck the two monsters, which were now stuck to each other, explosions ripped through the city streets, from objects that weren’t even touched by the beam. Most of the translucent spikes on Varan’s back shattered and exploded. Pieces of burning flesh began to hang and fall off of both monsters. Godzilla’s bell-like roar rang out as if to mock his adversaries.

Anguirus struggled fiercely to free himself from Varan’s body. Finally most of the spikes on Anguirus’s shell were released from his ally’s body, but many of the spikes remained in the monster’s torso. Varan was in more pain than what he had felt on his home island. The monster king lunged at his bipedal foe, knocking Anguirus out of his way. He instantly locked on to Varan’s neck with his mighty jaws. Before Varan could react, the dorsal fins on Godzilla’s back flickered and crackled with red and blue lightening. The King of the Monster unleashed his mightiest weapon with his foe’s neck still in his mouth. At such close range, Varan’s neck instantly disintegrated. Only Varan’s head remained, and it fell to the ground like ripe fruit off of a tree. Godzilla let out another deep roar of triumph as the rest of Varan’s body fell to the ground. As was customary for the monster king, he incinerated Varan’s remains.

Anguirus had finally gotten back to his feet when Godzilla had noticed him. Before the spinal biped could react, the monster king’s foot came crashing down on his head. More and more Godzilla stomped on his opponent’s head. Anguirus was not going to give up without a fight. His long and spiky tail whipped around and struck Godzilla in the back of the head. Angered by this retaliation, Godzilla once again began to charge up his heat beam. As Anguirus retreated back to his tunnel Godzilla released the mix of pera and radiation mix. His spinney opponent collapsed back into his hole as it exploded around him.

After over 14 hours of fighting, Godzilla had finally won the battle. His deep, bell-like roar could be heard in the streets of Yokohama. His kingdom free of intruders and his thirst for energy finally quenched, the King of the Monsters turned toward the sea.

**********************************************************************

Everyone in the strategy room at KTF watched in silence as all three of the large monitors showed video of Godzilla, now on a march back toward Tokyo Bay. It had been a long night. Two Chinook helicopters followed Godzilla from a safe distance as he finally made it to the water. It was hoped that they could follow him long enough to see where he was living.
The Prime Minister turned to his staff Kaijuologist, Dr. Tonogashi, “Do you think you could get another reading on that sensor?”
“I’ll get right on it.” Asoka replied.

**********************************************************************

On the landing pad outside of KTF headquarters, Dr. Kamichi and Dr. Hart received the news that Angurius and Varan had failed to stop Godzilla. Both monsters had perished and Godzilla had escaped into the bay.
Rachael felt sorrow for the fallen monsters, especially Anguirus. For some reason she had come to think of him closely, like a pet. If it weren’t for her and Dr. Kamichi, the monster would have stayed in his resting place, and would not have even come to Japan or fought Godzilla.

**********************************************************************

In the base lounge, Koichi and is linguistics expert Hiroshi sat silently. They had watched as the last remaining trace of the Sakano island culture, their deity, was beheaded by the world’s strongest monster. The long battle was over, and so was the culture of an entire people. The people had been isolated for thousands of years, and as soon as outsiders were let in, they were destroyed. The reality of the situation had weighed heavy on the two.

Epilogue

Tokyo, Japan
January 17, 2008

The city was once again alive, with the sound of machinery working everywhere. Some buildings had been completely rebuilt, but many remained as skeletons has thousands of crews were working on getting the city rebuilt.

It was only one week after the monster fights of 2006 that the air over Tokyo was deemed safe for human’s to breathe. People began to flood in from all over the country to begin a rebuilding process that had been two years in the planning. Now two years later, there were finally visible results. The government buildings had all been rebuilt. Power had been completely restored as well as most other utilities. There were also residential buildings that had been completed. The expressways were near completion and many people were anxious to return to the city.

In the Shibuya district, many people gathered around a new book store that was about to open. It was the grand opening of the store. To celebrate the momentous occasion the store had hired Hiroshi Shibetsu, author of the best seller “Lost People: The Story of Sakano Island”. People lined up around the block for a chance to meet the bestselling author and to get their books signed. Unfortunately, all the fame, fortune, and money could not hide the guilt that Hiroshi felt for the destruction of the Sakano island culture.

New Guinea
January 18, 2008

Koichi Kambara continued his trek through the unrelenting jungle. His had a crew of four people from the Kaiju Tactical Force behind him, along with three native guides. He was on the hunt for something that was said to dwell in these jungles. Since discovering Varan in 2006, KTF treated Koichi as an expert on “deity kaiju”, that is to say, monsters said to be legendary or worshipped by backward cultures.

Koichi’s travels had taken him to an island in the Philippines back in 2007, looking for a creature that the natives called Mothra. The natives were friendly and spoke Japanese, but to his dismay, he found no trace of Mothra.

He had even traveled as far as Ireland, to Nara Island. It is said that a large amphibious creature, similar to Godzilla, had appeared on the island many times in the past. The locals called him Gorgo, but the creature never showed his face during his six month stay there.

Now he was hunting another creature. Legend told of Barugon, a monster worshiped by one of the New Guinea tribes. The group marched on into the valley said to be home to the behemoth.

Kaiju Tactical Force Headquarters

Asoka Tonogashi was on her way to her research laboratory to analyze some new test results on an experiment done with some of her Godzilla cells. Dr. Tonogashi now had a team of experts in the new field of Kaiju studies.

Working under her were Dr. Toshi Kamichi and Dr. Rachael Hart Kamichi. Asoka had been the maid of honor when the two were wed in 2007. She felt honored that the two had taken such a liking to her, and they were her first friends that she had made since starting at KTF in 2005. The two paleontologists’ jobs were to examine new fossils and to determine if they were kaiju related or dinosaur bones. They were also working on determining exact origins for all currently known kaiju.

As for Asoka, she was still working on the completion of Project K. This was a top secret project, only known about by very few people in KTF. This was a top priority super weapon being developed by the US and Japan in order to defend the world against monster threats. The skin sample tests she held may be a key component in this weapon.

Unknown Hangar
Somewhere in the Desert of the United States

Prime Minister Togashi was escorted into the underground bunker along with his defense advisors. He was here to meet with the President of the United States and a handful of other major world power leaders to discuss the use of the project being assembled here. An American general approached the Japanese Prime Minster and saluted him.

“Sir, welcome to our base!” the general exclaimed. “We are proud to report that Project Kiryu is 98% complete. We are working on the onboard computer systems, and as soon as we have the results from Dr. Tonogashi’s tests, we should be able to complete this fine machine.”

“May I see it?” the minister asked in a heavy Japanese accent.

“Sure, right this way!” exclaimed the general.

The general led the minister and his defense advisors to a large steel door. The general slid an ID card and confirmed finger prints to open the large door. As the group walked in, a towering metal form stood above them. The Japanese defense advisors gasped as they looked upon the structure that would soon be the world’s foremost defense against Godzilla and other monsters. The machine that stood before them appeared to be a mechanical Godzilla.

In building it, the American military had built this machine in Godzilla’s likeness, down to his dorsal fins. Hundreds of mechanical arms were still working on the machine to finish the construction of the outer armor.

“This will do nicely,” the Japanese Prime Minister muttered in broken English, “We’ll be ready for you next time Godzilla.”

The End.

This is my second Fan Fiction story that I have written. It has been three years in the works with two drafts and 4 separate story lines thrown out already. I am glad to finally have it finished. It is part two in a trilogy I was planning, I only hope that part 3 doesn't take another 3 years. I hope everyone enjoys it, and I anxiously await any feedback and comments you have. Thank you for reading.
