I didn't see any listing for this in the SHOWAera portion of the forum. So here is my top 10 list Some of these are probably subject to change (Once I get the Japanese versions of them with the Eng Subs). 1 -Gojira (Japanese version Rocks! I no longer really care about the American Version after seeing that one - it just seems so hacked up - human element is GORGEOUS in the original Japanese version). 2 - Godzilla vs Mothra/Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (Tied) 3 - Son of Godzilla 4 - Godzilla vs the Sea Monster(Ebirah Horror Of The Deep) 5 - Godzilla's Revenge/Monster Zero(Invasion Of The Astro Monster) (Tied) 6 - Terror of Mechagodzilla 7 - Destroy All Monsters/Ghidorah The Three Headed Monster (tied) 8 - Godzilla Raids Again 9 - Godzilla vs Hedorah(Godzilla vs the Smog Monster) 10 - Godzilla vs Gigan/King Kong vs Godzilla (Great monsters... movies stink) That's how the top 10 ultimately works for me (Which actually has all of the G-Films in it). I am a very human element kind of viewer (I.E. I like the human characters to come off well, or at least decently. Which affects my liking a Godzilla film or not). So as much as I absolutely love the Kaiju/Giant Monsters... A good human story is what I find most attractive, of course arm in arm with the City Stomping or Battles. G7 |

I looked. I couldn't find anything pretaining to the SHOWAera favorites, specifically. Which is what this post was about. I wouldn't consider it to be miscellaneous in the least. |

This topic is just fine here because it's a "favorites" topic about only the Showa era Godzilla movies. I am going to edit the topic title to include "Showa" so other members looking at this thread will know only to list their Showa G movie favorites. I understand. To avoid any confusion about whether this list is about ranking any G films or just the Showa G films I'll amend the topic title. ![]() Note: Evan, I appreciate you waiting to let me make the call on the final placement of this topic thread. Thanks. ![]() How I rank the Showa Godzilla movies has varied slightly on occasion but not often. Here's how I rank them(with "1" being my top favorite), in terms of how much I like them and NOT from a purely "critical" POV: 1. Gojira(1954)( w/English subtitles) 2. Mothra Vs Godzilla(1964) 3. Destroy All Monsters(1968) 4. Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla(1974) 5. Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster(1964) 6. Terror Of Mechagodzilla(1975) 7. Invasion Of The Astro Monsters(1965) 8. King Kong Vs Godzilla(1962) 9. Godzilla Raids Again(1955) 10. Son Of Godzilla(1967) 11. Ebirah Horror Of The Deep(1966)(aka Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster) 12. Godzilla Vs Gigan(1972) 13. Godzilla Vs Hedorah(1971) 14. Godzilla Vs Megalon(1973) 15. All Monsters Attack(1969) (aka Godzilla's Revenge(1969) Edited by G2Kmaster, Jan 5 2010, 04:17 PM.

Funny how people's tastes vary with these films. I wouldn't consider my choices to be critical views either. If that was the case I would probably have to come down pretty hard on one of my favorites (GR - even though I think it is a wonderful film... it still had a lot of Stock footage - again: "It seems" Virtually all of them use one sort or another of Stock footage). I actually could possibly tie GtTHM with SoG... just because the human stories are pretty interesting. |

G2K: I have to be honest... I am surprised you ranked KKvG so low... I figured I was the only one that really didn't care for that film. I am sure GRA might score higher once I see the Japanese version. I hope the Jversion of GvGigan is better than the american cut. Beautiful kaiju... god awful characters in it. I am getting GMK, SoG, GvE, possibly KKvG & GvMegurius... topping it all off with Beast from 20000 fathoms/Them! (dual dvd) tomorrow. Then tomorrow night... I am going to order online (I think PM told me a long time ago the Advent version of) DAM and the TOHO PACK with Mysterians, Varan & MATANGO!!! A movie I have ALWAYS wanted to see!!! (Though I may be able to order them through the store I use to get all my Kaiju/Giant Monster Movies. I may... MAY possibly order Space Amoeba as well. ...AND THEN I WILL BE ONE HAPPY CAMPER!! Well. I didn't get KKvG yet... I am kinda curious if seeing it in Japanese could ever remotely improve its status with me (Frankly don't anyone hold their collective breaths... lol) The Japanese version of GvE was different. I had read about it starting out differently... I kinda like the American cut better (Which is the first time I have said that)... but I think it being in Japanese with Eng Subs was cool. very minor alternations to what was said in the spoken Eng version. doesn't change my position for it though... great human cast! I did not get SoG. Though that I doubt could improve much more... Just an incredible cast in that!... storyline was the best... I loved the whole science expedition thing. plus all the BOSS Kaiju that showed up in it (YES... including Minya). I tried to order the TOHO PACK with Matango, Varan and Mysterians in it... but they were not sure when it could possible be in... so I opted out. FIgure I will find another vender.... I AM SO BUMMED! Though I did order the Adv DAM, as per PM suggestion... I am just giddy with excitement! As my DAM VHS is really on the weak side (Though a buddy of mine who may not be into Godzilla anymore has the VHS AIP version... which is just gorgeous). I did end up getting GvMegurius and GMK. I will have to let you all know what I thought. Yes G2K... I will enjoy as always discussing GMK with you. It was different... but a side by side with the just as awesome Tokyo:SOS... actually... human character-wise GMK was better. But I will save that for the MELera posts. Lastly I did purchase that SCI-FI Double Feature: Beast from 20000 Fathoms/THEM! - I have not watched the Beast yet... but I already own a VHS copy of THEM! and I also have it on beta (Though my machine doesn't work)... I also have G84 on it too... Kingdom of the Spiders (Blah blah blah). Anyhow so far what I have gotten hasn't changed my mind about my list... though I do believe that GRA will. Cya |

I think your impression of the original uncut, widescreen Toho version of King Kong Vs Godzilla(1962) will be more favorable...certainly with the score, which is the original Ifukube score, a more majestic and methodical score. There are other talking scenes between the human cast in the original(and not in the 1963 John Beck produced American version) which may, or may not improve your impression of the film. I shopped twice a month at Best Buy for the last few months of 2009 and I always saw at least two copies of this DVD set on the shelves in the "sci-fi" section. Have you checked with any Best Buys in your area? |

Ohh I could just have them order me a copy... I didn't even think of Best Buy and that is where I purchased my TOHO ICONS... silly me! Great Call PM! Thanks! I would love to have my opinion of KKvG changed. If only elevated a bit (It isn't like the Toxic Avenger Kong and Frogodzilla are going to get any better - LOL) I am curious about something PM... how is it for you that KKvG ranked higher for you than GvE? Hope you don't mind my asking. G2k & DAM ownership Ohhh something must be done about that! I can't believe you don't have that one, I honestly thought you owned everything (cause your so smart about the Kaiju stuff). You need to get a copy so we can discuss DAM in the SHOWAera section for it! G7 |

By "GvE" I'm assuming you mean "Ebirah Horror Of The Deep". ![]() King Kong Vs Godzilla(1962) is a film I enjoy more than the 1966 Godzilla film because I like the human cast a little more(including the comedic elements) and, despite the poor rendering of Kong, still enjoy enjoy seeing King Kong and Godzilla square off. The "Kingoji" G suit design is also a personal favorite of mine. These are some reasons why I rank the '62 film higher on my "enjoyment" meter.

I can see that. The G-Suit in GvtSM/GvE/EhotD really isn't all that great (and I hate when it appears in DAM). I love the whole concept of Kong and Godzilla fighting. It is incredibly Iconic (Like Superman and Hulk). I just wish it could have been better visually, Plus the comedic elements kind of ruin it for me - there is more than necessary in it. I wish they had been a bit more subtle with it (such as was done in the movie Mothra with the character of reporter Senichiro Fukuda played by Frankie Sakai). I don't know why the human cast/characters within the films play such a strong role for me. Maybe I need a more semblance of reality within those/these incredibly unreal worlds that TOHO created. The HEISEIera actually is about the level of seriousness I like with a human cast. Yes it had a few whoppers of dumb things said. But those can be overlooked - you weren't drowning in it - as I do with Mr. Tako (not funny at all to me, actor -Ichiro Arishima). Of the SHOWAera movies, I really like (on a human interest level) - Gojira, Rodan, Mothra, GtTHM, GvMZ, GvtSM, SoG, DAM, GR, GvMG & ToMG. Those are probably my favorite films because of the human characters in them. The rest not listed and some I have not seen in a while or have never seen just fall short in the "Why should I care?" kind of stories. Of the ones I have not seen in a while or lost due to damage would be - Atragon, FctW & WotG. I would imagine at least 1 or 2 might be of my level of human interest. (Yes I know hearing I don't own Atragon and being a HUGE fan of Manda may come as a shock. But my copy was eaten by a fatal VCR attack about 7 yrs ago - and it wasn't a very good copy to begin with). I have never seen these movies - Mysterians, Varan, Matango, Dagora, Latitude Zero, Yog and most of the ZF episodes. (Though I think I may have seen Yog/Space Amoeba on Creature Feature - but my memories of it remain vague) I have to assume at least 3 of those might be what I like as well (I am most certainly betting on Matango). To be honest. I wish I wasn't so hard on a movie like KKvG. I hope Avery is right that seeing the Japanese KKvG will possibly be more to my liking (or at least raise it to a more respectable spot on my favorites). I can't wait to see the Japanese version of GRA (as all I have is the Gigantis version) and I have been told that the Japanese version is worlds above the American one (no surprise there!). Plus I do like the story of that movie a lot. I also have never seen the Japanese AMA (GR) - I know everyone hates that movie (for what I feel are the dumbest of reasons) -- but I am pretty certain that I will enjoy the Japanese version even more. There are of course a few others on this SHOWAera list that I have never seen the Japanese version of, Such as GvG... but I honestly can't see any hope for that films' cast of human characters (BTW -- I love the Kaijuu stuff in that - before anyone jumps me). I can say that I felt GvH was much better than GvtSmogMonster. Though it is still a film that could have been so much better. My biggest gripe about that film was the lack of Scientists and JDF, along with an actual lab for Dr. Toru Yano (actor - Akira Yamauchi) to work in from nearly the get go. A joke I often hear in reference to this film was that Dr. Yano was the ONLY scientist in Japan at that time. But they did a wonderful job with what they had (could have gone with a little less of the hippy crap as well). Yes I know the JDF appeared in the film... but it wasn't until the later half. For me in the end. If it is just monsters stomping around. Fine. Heck most Ultraman (or similar stuff) episodes that I have seen can be just that. BUT... in some cases, such as the first episode of the 1966 Ultraman (Ultra Operation No. 1 - July 17 1966) it had more characterization in a half hour than some G-Films (IMHO). Not necessarily the greatest acting -- and it had comedic element to it to, but it found an even medium with it (like in Mothra). I guess that is how I rate films when I watch them. OH... I don't know if I have ever said this in a post. But when I was little and saw KKvG... I thought the reason Kong looked so bad was because of his fall from the building (in his own movie), wasn't that incredibly naive of me? I can still remember thinking that. LOL I also loved "EVERY" one of Godzilla's appearances at that time, I wasn't seriously looking at the suits and I am not even sure I was aware of the differences then. Course now being older ruins it! Ain't that a damn shame! LOL Cya G7 |

I like all Godzilla films including this one. That said I have found the land form of the adult Hedorah leaves something to be desired, at least for me. The scene where Godzilla flies, using his own breath for airborne propulsion is poorly rendered and looks IMO absurd. I also dislike the "quacking" Godzilla theme. I rank the '71 film only slightly below those preceding it on my list. |

Packmule and me rated GvH the exact same. GvH just dragged on an on... I mean it took forever for anything to get done. I swear Godzilla spent more time examining Hedorah than he did actually fighting him (and in most of it the human bits were almost as much fun as the Godzilla bits -- til those bits started rolling then they were more fun). They could actually edit out a lot of the slower stuff and make it move along a little quicker... IMHO THE TRUE CREATURE FEATURE OF THIS FILM: what the hell was up with those peering old men or bums in the bushes... Did it signify something that I missed? or was it simply suppose to give me the nightmares it did? LOL BUT... I do love Hedorah. I think a new movie with Hedorah in it could utterly rock! Just because special effects are up on par for a creature such as Hedorah. Besides... maybe they could involve the JDF sooner!! HEH! and maybe... just maybe some government scientists to help the "Findings" Scientist along. This movie was as good as it was bad. In my opinion. Great foe though. ONE of the best. Certainly original (Sorta... Blob came first). G7 |
