AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Dennis Johnson, the star NBA guard who was part of three championship teams, died Thursday after collapsing at the end of practice. He was 52.

Johnson, coach of the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League, died at a hospital, D-League spokesman Kent Partridge said. Mayra Freeman, a spokeswoman for the Travis County medical examiner's office, said there will be autopsy.

Johnson, a five-time All-Star and one of the great defensive guards, played on title teams with the Boston Celtics and Seattle SuperSonics. He played 14 seasons, retiring after the 1989-90 season. He was the NBA Finals MVP in 1979 with Seattle, with his other titles coming with Boston in 1984 and 1986.

Johnson finished off one of the more famous plays in NBA playoff history. In Game 5 of the 1987 conference finals against Detroit, Larry Bird stole an inbounds pass and hit a streaking Johnson for the winning layup.

"Dennis was a great player, one of the best teammates I ever had, and a wonderful person," said Bird, now president of the Indiana Pacers. "My thoughts and condolences are with his family at this difficult time."

Johnson was a tough player with a reputation for delivering in big games.

"I hate to lose," he once said. "I accept it when it comes, but I still hate it. That's the way I am."

He averaged 14.1 points and 5.0 assists. When he retired, he was the 11th player in NBA history to total 15,000 points and 5,000 assists. Johnson made one all-NBA first team and one second team. Six times he made the all-defensive first team, including five consecutive seasons (1979-83).

Johnson was born Sept. 18, 1954, in Compton, Calif. He played in college at Pepperdine and was drafted by Seattle in 1976. Johnson was traded to Phoenix in 1980 and Boston in 1983.

:(

I watched the NBA religiously in the 1980's, in large part because of great NBA teams like the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76er's, and the Los Angeles Lakers, and the rivalries, both regular season and playoffs, between these three teams(and later the Detroit Pistons into the mix). I absolutely marvelled at the play of G Dennis Johnson, who was the epitome of a tough, hardnosed, competitive, yet always professional player. He was one of the best all around guards I ever saw play, period.

May he Rest In Peace.

I was just E-mailed by an online friend in the UK that John Inman, best known for his role as, Mr Humphries in the British comedy, Are You Being Served?, has passed away at age 71. :( I had a tough time finding any info on his passing, but he was suffering from Hepatitis A and had been ill for several weeks.

Inman brought lots of laughter to my home and I sincerely hope he's at peace, now and free of any pain.

As I'm sure everyone knows yesterday a lone and disgruntled senior at Virginia Tech University went on a shooting rampage, in two different buildings on campus, and went it was over he had killed thirty one students, a professor, and them himself. I first saw this on the internet yesterday afternoon after coming home from work. I was shocked, disgusted, and bewildered, and admittedly all at once. Despite the spate of school(high school and college) shootings over the last 8-10 years I keep thinking to myself: Okay, this will probably never happen again.
...And then it does happen again. In the ensuing days and weeks there will be many questions asked about almost everything and everyone involved in this tragic event, but the most important thing right now any of us not involved can do is keep the families and friends of those lost in this heinous act of violence in our thoughts and prayers. I know I will. :(

It was posted tonight at WWE.com that longtime pro wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife and son, were all found dead inside their home in Fayette County, GA. The link: http://wwe.com

I have been a fan of pro wrestling since I was a teenager and Chris Benoit was one of the hardest working and absolutely physically toughest, and dedicated, men inside the ring I ever saw. The community of professional wrestling has lost a great one today.

It was revealed by authorities that Chris Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his seven year old son, then hanged himself from the pulley of a weight machine. Here's the article link with the details: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19424899/?GT1=10056

I have to wonder if Benoit's steroid use played some part in his state of mind. It's no secret many of these pro wrestlers use anabolic steroids for muscle enhancement and enhanced stamina. For a man to kill his wife, then his pre-teen son...it just boggles my mind how anyone could reach a point in their own mind where they would be capable of doing that. :(

Tammy Faye Messner, formerly Tammy Faye Bakker and wife to disgraced televangelist Jim Bakker, has died. She was 65. She died in her sleep after a long battle with colon cancer that had spread into her lungs. Tammy Faye Messner made an appearance on The Larry King Show last night, to say goodbye to friends and loved ones.
...
I was shocked and deeply saddened to see how emaciated Tammy Faye Messner looked while I watched the video of her appearance on "Larry King". To this woman's credit she always maintained an upbeat, positive attitude despite the constant pain and the other debilitating effects that the cancer had on her physically, which IMO is truly remarkable. Through the scandal of her former husband, Jim Bakker, in the late 1980's and her health problems later, Tammy Faye Messner always professed her faith in God. I hope she's at rest now. God knows this courageous woman deserves it. :(

I was sad when I read this online, this morning. I know that Tammy was the butt of a lot of jokes and such, but I actually had a lot of respect for the woman in how she handled all the adversity that entered her life, as we saw it. I never watched on a regular basis, but did occasionally see her on, The Surreal Life and she looked like she really enjoyed herself. She didn't join in the club/bar scenes, but I admired that, because it wasn't something she did and she didn't change her beliefs simply for the TV show. She appeared to have a great sense of humor and came across as very likeable.

I was quite sad when I heard she was battleing cancer and when it appeared to have really taken hold, but she didn't even want sympathy, she held her head up and kept living to the extent she could and I do admire that.

It was posted today at MSN.com that former San Francisco 49ers head coach Bill Walsh has died. He was 75. Walsh had been battling leukemia since 2004, when he was first diagnosed with the disease. Bill Walsh orchestrated what may be arguably the greatest turnaround in the history of professional football, after taking the head coaching job at SF after the 1978 season, in which the Niners finished with an abysmal 2-14 record. In Walsh's first season in 1979, the team again went 2-14 but drafted some guy named Joe Montana. In 1980 the SF 49ers went 6-10 and in 1981, Walsh's third season coaching this team, the Niners won the Super Bowl. The San Francisco 49ers would go on to win two more Super Bowls with Walsh as their head coach, the team dominant in the 1980's. Walsh, nicknamed "The Genius" during his coaching days, was long considered to be one of the great offensive masterminds of the league and an incomparable innovator. The list of assistant coaches who were mentored by Bill Walsh, and went on to become head coaches themselves, is long: Ray Rhodes, Mike Holmgren, Tony Dungy(who played for Walsh) and George Seifert. I heard this morning that Brian "Crush" Adams had died at age 44. He last wrestled in the WWF in 2001. I used to enjoy watching this wrestler perform his signature move, a submission hold where he pushed extremely hard on the sides of an opponents head, then lifted him into the air and back down multiple times until the opponent either gave up or passed out. Im not certain but I believe this move was called the "Cranium crush". Reports said he was found dead at home, no foul play was suspected, and cause of death would be determined by autopsy reports.

It was posted this morning at Comcast.net that former NBA player Eddie Griffin died last week. He was 25. A car Griffin was driving collided with a freight train which resulted in the vehicle bursting into flames. The delay in the announcement of the former Minnesota Timberwolves player was due to the fact the Medical Examiner had to make a positive identification through dental records. I think this guy did a stint with the Rockets as well. Our local paper mentioned him as playing for that club but unfortuantely I can't recall seeing him in any games. Oftentimes I would only have time for Spurs games and I would sit the Rockets out.
